  1. Nope, I'm just one of many ordinary KDE users. I just posted this because I too have seen many posts slating KDE4, instead of giving it a chance to flourish. :) I've just seen why you asked that question: I took that excerp from the actual article.
  2. There has been a bit of a dustup about KDE 4.0. A lot of opinions have been expressed, but I thought you might like to hear from KDE. So I wrote to them and asked if they'd be willing to explain their choices and answer the main complaints. They graciously agreed. KDE on KDE 4.0
  3. Hmmm, I don't see no awful font rendering here  viking777 can you post an example link please?
  4. The OP wants to be able to save a list of the files he needs to a text file, then download the contents of that text file on a different computer. His modem isn't fast enough to do as you instructed.
  5. Also once you have done as liquidzoo has suggested, you should just be able to single or double click on the .exe and the program should launch, no need to use commandline.
  6. Thanks for the additional info
  7. Thank you David for your input :)
  8. Can any ADSL users clear up this query for me. I know nothing about ADSL but from what I've read so far, it should be pretty straightforward to get my friend up and running again. He has bought an Edimax AR-7084A adsl router: http://www.edimax.com/en/support_detail.ph...1&pd_id=128. My question is, will using this router will eliminate the need for him to use his usb adsl modem? He's on Pipex.
  9. It's a simple enough question. :) I would be very interested in reading your reason(s).
  10. Have you checked your settings in KDE Control Centre--> KDE Components--> Session Manager--> Default Shutdown Option? Are you able to shutdown from commandline using either power off or shutdown -h now?
  11. You should have an icon for it under games--> sports. If not do: alt & f2 then type foobillard and click run.
  12. Go to root and do: urpmi samba-client. Once installed exit root and close the konsole. You can now access your xp box using smb://<name or ip of xp box> from the address bar of konqueror or your home folder, or you can use an app like Smb4k and do it graphically.
  13. You could always reset your desktop back to default by removing your .kde folder. If you want to give this a try, stay at the login screen and do: Alt + Ctrl + F1 to get to a terminal screen. Login in with your (not root) username and password. Now type rm -rf .kde press enter, now type exit and press enter, then do Alt + F7 to get back to the login screen and login from there as normal.
  14. Maybe that's because so much of it goes unreported! Yes I agree that the media does tend to over-hype these situations, non the less, it does exist and should rightly be exposed and stamped out. Enough of the 'Old Boys' network already.
  15. I have the same problem with PClinuxOS when I use a fixed ip. It used to work fine, then all of a sudden it started losing the dns settings. I switched back to auto and it's been fine so far. @ianw1974: Can you elaborate on using the chattr command please?
  16. It looks like many have heeded the call, I can't even get on the site to download FireFox 3!!
  17. It certainly smells of political sleaze and cronyism to me.
  18. Artic requested enlightenment. No one has recommended one browser over another. Only features and options are being compared/discussed.
  19. Here are some of the reasons I prefer Opera. 1. It's fast 2. Continue from where you left off after a browser crash 3. It's easy to edit site preferences 4. It's beautiful in full screen mode 5. Speed dial 6. Good transfer/download manager 7. It can be configured and configured and configured again until you physically throw up :) Those are just a few reasons why I prefer Opera.
  20. Sorry I don't have any numbers for you, but I can confidently say your pc will happily run i686. The i386 and i686 is a reference to the class of intel processors (intel did rule the roost for a number of years) the distros can run on. See here for more info: i386: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_80386 i686: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_P6
  21. Ouch! With my single core 2Ghz, 1Mb of ram and 128Mb graphics card I must be running a souped up calculator.
  22. Download Mandriva One 2008.1. It's a single cdrom. It will run as a live cd or you can opt to install it from the desktop. You can add the repositories (sources) later to give you full access to available extra software. 10.1 is really old (and probably no longer supported), you may have a smoother experience using a more current version. It's available here: http://www.mandriva.com/en/linux/ Also it might be better to leave things on Auto discovery until you get the networking sorted, you can assign fixed ips after.
