  1. Maybe you could try "wine" to play your games under linux ... or maybe you tried that already.
  2. I never used it, but I think you can do this with shorewall: http://shorewall.net/UserSets.html This comes from the documentation-section on http://shorewall.net . Hopes this help, Michel. P.S: I don't think it's needed/a good idea, to give someone direct access to the network device. Why? I suppose that person can look at all the traffic then and if he has write-permission, also write to it directly. Mayeb this isn't so bad, but is it good? I think Mandrake has lids-support compiled in by default, maybe you can use that, but I think that shorewall will be easier.
  3. I don't have a laptop, but this is what I know. Linux has a special laptop-mode which essently delays writing to the harddisk, ... You can use cpufreqd, but there is also another program "cpudyn" I think that does this all the time(I think cpufreqs only reacts on pluggin into the powersource or am I wrong? ... You'll have to check): it speeds up your cpu when it's needed and slows it down when not (not only when your laptop is disconnect from a powersource). You need "acpid" for the lidclosing: check /etc/acpid/handler.sh. It specifies something about lid. You can also find some docs online for this. Longrun is supported in the kernel, I saw it in the option-list. You need to modprobe the cpufreq-modules (table, freq, ... maybe others) and the longrun one. There will appear new devices in your /sys-system when it succeeds. Not sure about the touchscreen, although I think I saw some setups described, but I don't know much about this. Hopes this helps some,
  4. I'm interested to hear if anon's recovery-method works, but if it doesn't ... *I'm not sure, but I don't think you had to delete the complete root-line .. now you don't have a root-user anymore. Add it again. You can use the command "adduser" for this. you can also start using "linux init=/bin/bash". *Not sure if an upgrade will help ... since I suppose that it doersn't touches your user-configuration. I don't think it's needed anyway. *If the above fails .. try to use a bootable cd like knoppix and change add the users from there if possible ... (I suppose so). You could try this then: Mount your real root-partition. Execute the chroot-command to make your real rot-partition the root instead othe knoppix one. execute the useradd-command : you'll maybe have to specify the absolute path (/sbin/useradd or something like that), but I sdon't think this will be necessary. That's it I suppose ... Check if /etc/passwd, ... contain your new user root. With usermod, you can change data about users. Hopes this helps.
  5. Well, I don't switch much. I have been using Mandrake for 2-2.5 years or so. You can learn gradually abotu linux this way according to my opinion. For a moment I tested arklinux, but I went back to Mandrake. Since 3-4 months I'm using archlinux now and am really pleased with it. It's fast as far as I know, it's stable for me. The package-manager is simple and nice and is getting better. If you compile a package, you download the source from the web, ... Ofcourse there is room for improvement (security to my opinion) ... It's a community-effort. Michel
  6. For most command in linu there is a manual with extra info about it. for example: man ftp I use lftp myself sometimes (although I prefer sftp or scp), but I don't know if it can be used for automating things. man sftp (ftp using ssh) man scp (copy using ssh) The bash-completion-package is also nice to install ... Bash-scripting is handy, ofcourse you are free to use what you want(another shell, perl, ...): http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/
  7. Heya, it has been a time since I used Mandrake, but you could go to the remove-software-part of the control center and ask maximal-info about the packages you installed. There you can see which files were installed. You could also do a "locate mp3info", ... On the commandline there si a command "urpmi.query ..." or something with which you can query (installed) packages. Look at files that are installed in a "bin"-directory and try to execute them on the commandline. I suppose that if a program has no gui, it won't show up in the menu or maybe it is a kde program, then mayeb ti won't show up in the gnome menu. You can use the menu-editor to change this locally/globally. Hopes this helps some, Michel
  8. Have you install the development-package (it contains -devel in the package name I believe) of sasl? That one contains the interfaces of the software. Hopes this helps, Michel

    Servers

Heya, some time since I used Mandrake, but you can install sofwtare using Mandrake's control-center. There is a section software-management that contains a "install software"-part. You can search for something you want, but you can also view software based on catehory. I think there is a server-category. Hope this helps some, Michel
  10. I'm everything but an expert in this, but I believe you can force a network to broadcast packets I think ... not sure though. Ofcourse, if this is possible do you make your cracking-attemtp visible? Anyway, don't use wep unless it's your only choice. If you use wpa with 128-bit encryption(this should be the minimum anyway I think) or/and a strong password (also necessary ...), there was also a way to crack it I believe. Don't know how long it takes however.
  11. thanks for the info, Michel
  12. maybe there is a setyting ina gui for this, but in /etc/pam.d you can configure from where a user can login ... better than nothing. If you say local it is difficult to fake It hink, not sure though.
  13. Heya, we may have 2 computers in the house soon, so I was thinking about cabling. We had some talk about wireless, but I want cabling in the first place ... and I actually would like a low-power-linux server :). I have never setup a network ... so here I go: Anyway, I was thinking about isn cat 6 if it doesn't cost a lot more than cat 5e. I know that people say that cat5e will do also fine, but I suppose cat6 is better suited for the "future". Is it right that the diameter for cat 6 is max 7mm (I found it on this site: http://www.cableprodata.com/new_page_2.htm)? Anyway, say I use cat6. I read that the network will degrade itself to the client with the lowest cat-version or something? Say I have cat 6 cabling, one user using cat5 (maybe not cat5e) and another one using cat6. Would the cat6 user also only get cat5-speeds while the cat5-user is on ? I wouldn't like this ... I suppose I can just put cat6-wall-sockets and cat5 also can get plugged in it (I read that cat6 is backward-compatible ... but I just want to be sure). I will be searching on the web how to setup a network and ask some advice but if anyone knows some info on the web ... it would be welcome: cutting cables, connecting cables to the wall, running cables to through the house (not bending it to much ... ? seems logical, but how much may one bend it?), .... You probably can't saturate a gigabit network unless you use raid and maybe 2 computers (without doing anything else on a computer) ... but I'll see. If the price is ok ... Thanks, Michel
  14. Can't really help you with the detecting ..except with tools loke iptraf maybe. I think you can add your own "rules" to iptraf. prelude IDS is another IDS. With my wmall knowledge about this, I think you need to put a sensor (the ids can have sensors on multiple locatioosn which collect data to process). If you can't put a sensor on the router I would suggest putting it before the router. Anywa, I can be wrong. But I suppose you should put the sensor where you cant to collect infor from ... I suppose the best would vbe to leave the wep-key the same for some time, so they don't suspect anything ... but it seems that happened. I suppose if your system uses iptables or something, you could log suspiciuous mac-address or connections that happen betwee, some hours I think or so. But I suppose you know 64-bit isn't secure (at all?). At least you should use 128 bit. And even then a key can be broken in an hour or less I think. I don't know if he/she has it already .. but allowing only certain mac-addresses can also help and disabling ssid broadcast. If security may take some more time to set up initially. I would suppose a vpn ... an ssh-tunnel. There are opensource programs for this which can make it easier I believe? If you really want wep, you can use a radius-server like freeradius with peap or something like that and let a wingle wep-key be assigned to each individual user and let the wep-key automatically change every 5 minutes or so. I read this in an article earlier. It was interesting. Anyway, I'm no security-expert ... but hope it helps some ... If they are connected with the hotspot maybe using "nmap" on the local network can help. You could even try to detect vurnerabilities won ttheir computers if there are other people on the network ...
  15. This is in fact a separate topic, but did you get that native resolution of your projector Gowator .. if you remember ? If so, is there some info about it ... I'm just curious .. Michel
  16. The response of iphitus is the most general one. Change the user of the icons ... Anyway, with kde you have a progtram called "kiosk" which will give you option for the desktop like you mention ... although I have never used it ..so I cannot confirm it also can lock down icons ... Maybe this page can help you: http://www.kde.org/areas/sysadmin/ However if uses have access to other environments .. they can go and work in those ofcourse. For gnome ... I only have a faint idea ... I read that there are some lockdown-keys for gnome. I checked it and there are a phew, but not for locking icons as far as I know: open gconf-editor (as root for the global configuration?) and go to "desktop-gnome- >lockdown. Althoughj I thought sun has a complete suite for locking down desktops I believe and as far as I know they use gnome ... I don't seem to have an option to lockdown icons, but here they mention do have ...: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-dev...r/msg00170.html I hoever have a panel-lockdown-item in "apps->panel". If you hae gnome 2.8 you can search fo lock-keys or lockdown. Although I only find another one for epiphany .. maybe you have more luck. seems it is called GLF (gnome lockdown framework: http://lists.gnome.org/archives/desktop-de...h/msg00032.html I don't really have an idea for other apps, but changing the user of a file is the most generic one if that is possible.

    All logins refused??

Heya, different possibilities I think. You should look at the /etc/pam.d-directory first. There are some scripts that control the login=procces. With access.conf you can specify who can login and from where. I don't know if this is tcp_wrapper-config. Don't think so. You should have a look in /etc/security. Certain servers (all?) make use of tcp_wrapper. It's guided by a config file in which you can specify stuff like which user can access which servicefrom where , .... Also do a search on agetty. I think it controls who can login to console I think ... 'Maybe some of the stuff I saif above is th saem ... I'm no expert in this myself ... Ofcourse you also have the ssh-config-files like you probably know where you can specify whioch users can login ... Maybe using webmain (if you don't use it already) can make it easier ? Or just to check the settings of stuff ... I don't know how experienced you are ... greetz, Michel
  18. Yes, you can do that. However, there is no sound, but I read an article about it or so where multiple solutions where proposed. xvidcap captures in mpeg-4 This is another one: http://desktops.linux.com/desktops/04/07/2...242.shtml?tid=6, but there are tools to convert vieo-files to flash ... if this will work for you is another thing ... Hopes this helps a bit. I'm not sure of the following sinc eI don't use Mandrake anymore, but you maybe can try it ... This way you maybe also get an answer quicker. Ofcourse you can ask here and maybe get more applications and comments about what to use "best" ... If you ever want to search for a tool ... you can fire up Mandrake's software-installer. You can select to search through descriptions of packages.

    GNU/Hurd

I really didn't have a good look at it, but as far as I know this is a micro-kernel (is this the correct term?) they are developping. This means that most stuff happens outside the kernel (drivers, ... ? ) as far aas I know ... So, they should be quite stable I suppose. someone correct me on this if I'm wrong pls ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microkernel#Microkernels I would like to try it out ... I think this would be a great addition. From what I just read ... I like the file-translators :), ...
  20. Dont know, but it won't run realy fast, since apple doesn't use x86-hardware like you probably know. Anyway, there is some popular emulator, but I can't remember it's name ... Anyway, there is also "qemu" which maybe can help you ..., but I don't use it, so I don't know what it needs ... But The support for macs is being worked on.
  21. For the text .. maybe you can look in the preferences-section of bzflag or did you do that already ? I can't use the nvidia-drivers with archlinux at the moment, I jsut get a black screen ...but onc eI can run them again, I'll be playing bzflag again normally :).
  22. Heya Jet2k5, bzflag uses oss for sound I think. And oss doesn't work together with alsa, ... always. Be sure to load the oss-emulation-modules for alsa (snd-card-0 snd-pcm-oss snd-seq-oss snd-mixer-oss). Just put them in the MODULES-section in /etc/rc.conf, but maybe you did know that already These will create the necessary devices in the /dev-directory ...(/dev/dsp, ... I believe) For alsa you can try to do the following: start bzflag as following: aoss bzflag but this doesn't work always. Then, shut down all other sound and play bzflag .... but the sound won't be dmixed ....
  23. It's true that it would better be closed, but by default it doesn't install samba I think. I don't know an other service that runs on the port, but there can be ofcourse ... I think by default there is nothing running on the port, so there is nothing to exploit except the firewall if you have it on ... (which is good to have on)

    Game On.......

Maybe you can find help in the following thread: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?sho...=10739&hl=samba It could also be nice to install webmin ... and maybe the Mandrake control center can help you with this? I suppose you' ve heart of webmin (or using it?) or not? I would say .. give it a try ... Anyway, I suppose it's good to know it without extra tools. I also found this thread about the print-as-pdf-server setup: http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtop...1&st=&p=entry Hopes these help you some ... Michel

    Game On.......

I have never set up a network, but I have some ideas :). You could set up as a file-server, a proxy-server (also for downloads? .. I suppose so and add content-filtering also ... I mean for pop-blocking, advertisement-blocking .. ofcourse you can have false negatives, but you could show a page evrytime you block something how to contact someone to unblock it ...) (squid, privoxy, dansguardian, ... I'm not sure if privoxy and dansguardian scale on large networks .. like I said I have never set them up), a mail-server with spam and virus-filtering, print-server: you can setup a virtual printer in cups (the print-server in most/all-linux-distributions) that makes pdf's of the pages you send to it. One drawback is that you can't choose the filename and location I think. It's generated by a script, ... Ofcourse you can also do these things in windows ... (maybe that some applications I mentionned aren't really supported for windows) they are both operating systems, like said you have to compare to use which one for what ... Linux has good networking-support I thought ... If you have apple's in your school, you could setup apple-talk-print and fileservers on linux I think (I just saw a link about it today) so apple-users have it easy also ... With mandrake you also have a lot of packages you can easily install (at least if you have added the different rpm-install-locations .. for example those from the easyurpmi-site.). You update all the software through rpm ... I believe there is a program that can notify you know when you have updates, but you could also setup a cron-job. Enhanced security? You could set it up as a backup-server ... I just discovered them today, but there are program that will let you install iso-images (all pc's have to be the same ...) on all pc's at onc ethrough the network .. You have the network-install-option from mandrake-linux, but with this I suppose you can also distribute windows-iso-images. If you are interested in this, I can have a look again ... I'm not sure how difficult ort easy to set this all up, but I suppose it takes some time ...
