  1. Well .... Gaim works well with both KDE and GNOME. I wish Samba 4k and KGet would do the same .... What replacement can I use for Samba 4k except LinNeighborhood which has ugly graphics (looks like that awful Win 95).
  2. Well, no answer ? Or maybe it's one of those things that are still "in development" for GNOME.
  3. I used this command: urpmi gkrellm.
  4. Good question. I know the bastards at M$ are constantly "improving" NTFS but when will we get full support for it ? Or maybe it already exists ?
  5. Why won't KDE applications go in the taskbar when run from GNOME ? Instead they create tiny windows with the icons that are supposed to be showed in the taskbar. Is there a work around ?
  6. What are you talking about ?? This board will be really lonely without bvc: no more kewl themes (I am still using one of your themes:D) no more arrogant posts -- don't get me wrong I like them , and no more much appreciated help. We have already lost some fine members. This board's prestige will go down if we continue to lose valorous members. Go to Hawaii, Mexico or the Azores Islands (one of my favorites) if you feel you need a vacation or something and then come back.
  7. Hmm ... that might be a solution ... I'll try that. The oldest Mandrake I have is 9.2. Does it work in GUI mode with an old Celeron 433MHz, 64 MB RAM and a 9GB hd ? I don't know what kind of graphics card it has.
  8. I have also heard that Debian/Gentoo make good servers but ...... as far as I know Gentoo and Debian are not so easy to install. I still consider myself a n00b and would try something easier. MNF also has a free downloadable version. Check the Mandrake site. What I'm trying to do here is get the Internet working and learn Linux server administration at the same time. It doesn't have to be quite professional (for now) because I'm not running a company or something. I want my server to be protected from hackers and things to run smoothly. I'll install Debian or Gentoo when I will be ready. For now I'll stick to the "user-friendly" distros. In these 2 months (as a Linux user) I have learned a lot of stuff but there is soooooooo much more. THX for your help.
  9. VNC RealVNC: www.realvnc.com or Tight VNC: www.tightvnc.com
  10. Well, the probelm is that I've scanned the server with Nessus and it has some holes ..... :( That guy doesn't care about this. He could get updates and such but ..... he doesn't. Mandrake's urpmi would ease the update process (right ?). I was thinking about MNF because it looks very good for the job with all those features and stuff. Another motive is that I'm a Mandrake user so ..... I support Mandrake :D.
  11. I will use it as Internet gateway, firewall amd do some file sharing.
  12. Ok, here is the scenario: a small LAN, about 22 PCs that need Internet access and one cable modem. In other words I need to configure a Linux server to do the job. We already have one but I'm not administrating it. I only have user access to it. The guy that is currently root doesn't do such a good job. The server is currently using Slackware Linux with the 2.4 Kernel. I want to replace him and become root myself. No I'm not talking about hacking the server. I'll get permission of course. I've been thinking about this for a long time and I think I want to do it. This is what I have in mind: -format the server's hd -install Mandrake MNF -configure needed software & administer (!) I think that the last part will be the hardest (or maybe not ? ). I have never administered a server before but I want to know if my current Linux knowledge is enough. I mean is it hard ? Where can I find some newbie guides for this kinda thing ? I know I'll get help from the board if I get stuck but I don't wanna resort to that, in this case, because if I'm going to replace that guy I'll have to do better than him without any mistakes. What do you think ?
  13. Well, I use GNOME. GNOME has these extremely useful GNOME-system-tools which make your life easier. :P Everything is very easy to configure. Since you are a KDE user go to the Samba Configuration Tool (the Konqueror extension) and change your pc's name from there.
  14. You mean, dynamic ? Please detail ........
  15. I've just updated Gkrellm and now it no longer works. It returns this error: [root@Alex root]# gkrellm gkrellm: relocation error: gkrellm: undefined symbol: gdk_threads_lock
  16. As far as I know, there is no way you can hack a DVD drive to get around that stupid region bla bla bla using software. However you must do some hardware hacking ;) which is a little harder ... I found a tutorial on how to do this while searching for dvd ripping guides but I can't find it no more.... :( so you'll have to google for this .... if you want to do the hack.

    GNU/Hurd

Those are the links I used to get more info about Hurd. And this one: http://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/hurd.html

    GNU/Hurd

I've just heard about this new Kernel that is in development. I thought the project had died. I mean that is the impression that R. Stallman gave me in the "Revolution OS" movie. Has anybody tested it ? They say it still has lots of bugs, doesn't support certain hardware, etc, but IS it promissing ? Will it be able to challenge GNU/Linux ? Debian seems to support it. What do you guys think ?

    email

What program(s) can I use with Evolution to get my email from Gmail and Yahoo! ?
  20. It looks ok. If you think Gaim is huge, make it smaller :) I use GNOME and I like to have large icons. Big is beautiful :P
  21. Don't you think it is odd to report that the FS is broken although the error has nothing to do with it ? I mean, how did Linux link the PAM problem with the filesystem ? That's kinda weird. I agree with you, it gave me useful information but also a lot of false stuff. I'm not praising Windows. The only thing I admire in Windows is the ability to run tons of games.
  22. Mods, you can mark this as solved :D I would have never thought that a stupid line like the dri one in console.perm could cause so much trouble. I booted Knoppix, edited the console.perm (I removed the dri line) and now it works flawless. I would still rate this as a bug. Linux scared me by giving false error messages. It made me believe, at first, that the partition was ruined or something. Why did Linux had to cause panic by doing this ? Why didn't it say something like this instead: "There is an error at line # in console.perm. I refuse to boot :P" ? It would have been far more useful.
  23. But what about my trust in Mandrakelinux as an OS ? If this keeps happening from time to time I can't continue to use it. An OS must be reliable. Is this a known bug ? Did I do something wrong (I don't remember doing anything special) or maybe it is one of those "hidden features" ?
  24. OK I have the MDK disks plus Mandrake Live and Knoppix. I'll give it a whirl. Let's say I manage to fix it. Will this ever happen again ? If so I'll be extremely disappointed. And the billion $ question: What caused this ?
  25. I've just tried to boot my MDK 10.0 OE and it's totally broken. I don't have a boottheme so here are some of the things I get when I try to boot: L **: unknow class "dri" at line 80 in /etc/security/console.perms (I believe I caused this one .... I had to edit that in order to make de GLMatrix screensaver to work - I was guided by the NVIDIA FAQ) Loading default ???? : /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: line 255: /dev/tty0: No such file or dir fsck.ext3/dev/hda5 The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 fs. If the device is valid and it really contains and ext2fs ...... (blah, blah) then the superblock is corrupt and you might try running ext2fsck with the alternate superblock. e2fsck -b 8193 <device> :No such file or dir while trying to open /dev/hda5 This is what I've copied on a piece of paper. My linux fs was (? ) ext3. I also use ext2ifs in WinXP for accessing my linux partition (read-only). The ext3 partition is still accessible from WinXP. What in the world caused all this and is there a way to fix it without reinstalling ?
