  1. Where? The only download demo version I can find is a windows version...
  2. nedit should be in the RPM repositories. If you install from there it should be added to your start menu. You could then get a desktop short cut to it - no problem. Let's try and get your printer working first. Try and test the cat command in a shell with a text file so that we know if we're at least going down the right road... Getting Nedit working for you should be the easy bit after that...
  3. cat is a shell command. You could just run that on a text file you had just written and, assuming that the assumptions about raw data working are correct, it should work. Otherwise text editors like nedit allow you to configure the print command, so you could set it up to cat the current open file to /dev/lp0... That would give you a more "gui" approach...
  4. Is there a demo version for Linux?
  5. Does anyone know anything about python event handling? As far as I can make out, an event should be thrown when I walk into certain buildings that just isn't getting thrown... Has the event model changed in recent versions of python?
  6. no one on the arch forums has a clue, but it's all linux and I know AI has played the game. Scarecrow: you don't fancy installing the demo do you and see if you get the same results do you? It owuld be worth knowing if it's something in my setup or something to do with how arch is set up?
  7. I wasn't sure whether to post this in games since it's about getting a game to work or in here since I'm trying to play it on arch. Mods feel free to move it if you want. I bought the full version of Devil Whiskey for Linux and I'm having problems getting it to work properly. When you enter certain buildings or go certain places etc... python scripts are run to include bits of gameplay - someone passed you a note, someone wants to talk to you, attack you etc... The problem is that almost none of these every get run for me( the same was true when I played the demo but I assumed it was because of the limitations of the demo. For example, when I enter a building in which a part of the plot is supposed to unfold, instead of seeing the appropriate content, I just enter an empty building - as if it had no roof. I have definately got all the dependencies installed - at least all the listed ones... Unfortuantely there aren't really any error messages so I'm drawing a blank. I'm hoping someone with some python knowledge or who has got this game to work (AI...) might be able to give me some clues...
  8. I've switched back to thunderbird from evolution and am much happier now that I did...
  9. You can't drag and drop into an ipod you do have to use something like gtkpod or itunes via wine(I believe this works although I've never tried it myself...) Having said that, ipods work really well with Linux if you don't mind using gtkpod. Any MP3 player that you can drag and drop into in windows and has a fat filesystem, you will be able to mount it in linux and drag and drop into it.
  10. It is more difficult but not necessarily more stable imho... Stick with Mandriva to get you started.
  11. You don't happen to have a KVM switch do you...?

    No ATI 3d?

Hopefully not being patronising here, but you did restart X didn't you? You don't need to wait for the next version of mandriva - this can be made to work. What happens if you type modprobe -r agpgart modprobe agpgart ? Hopefully you should see no output from either command. Essentially agpgart is a module in the drivers, but it never seems to work. There is the same module built into the kernel (I hope it's in the mandriva one...) which works much better...

    No ATI 3d?

Try changing the Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "yes" in your xorg.conf to Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no" and see if that makes a difference
  14. yeah - my main problems were with the ATI drivers at the time - which have improved a lot! Aussie John, I understand how you feel, but remember - it's all Linux! Actually the same operating system...

    webDAV

You probably need to specify a file system type using the -t switch. No idea what the file system would be for a WebDav system... Edit: Just found this: http://dav.sourceforge.net/
  16. Which is why it's the perfect distro! :P I'm running arch on my laptop - and it all good so far...
  17. All the more reason to not worry about buying them then! Do you have any links or anything to back this up John?
  18. I don't use gnome, but I do use evo - as I said, because I may want to try and sync it with my phone...
  19. do an ssh -vvv and post the results...
  20. I currently use evolution, but only because at some point I'm hoping to use synce to sync my smartphone to it. If I never get around to that, I may switch back to thunderbird, which I prefer in many ways...
  21. At the risk of getting my head bitten off - I actually think some MS hardware is quite good. Especially things like keyboards and mice. It doesn't really bother me having a windows key to be honest...
  22. yeah - it's easy enough to use with a 3rd aprty client but (I believe) you need a gmail username to sign up (which is fine - I have one) but you also need a gmail username to add a buddy! Therefore, a jabber name won't work... If you look through those instructions you'll see that you're usign ther jabber protocol to connect to a gmail specific server...
  23. Can you? Don't you need a gmail username?
