  1. I have 10.0 running nicely on my laptop, but my regular working system won't take to 10.0 because of the EZ-Drive problem (my linux is on hdb which is EZ, hda is Win and Debian unstable) and the fact that I can't boot off of cd1, thus not being able to install with the 2.4.25 kernel. I will wait to see if the EZ-Drive problem is fixed by the time 10.0 final is out. That leaves me with my good old stable 9.2 all set up the way I like it. That's actually fine with me because it forces me to focus on what I use my computer for. 9.2 works just great and from my experience with my laptop I doubt that I really "need" 10.0. I'd like it, but it feels good to wait and see. Back to my drive I recall seing somewhere that inb the 2.6.4 kernel is an EZ-drive patch of sorts. Anyone know if that is so?
  2. real video card; ati rage mobility (or whatever it's called).
  3. odd about comcast and Linksys. I use comcast and also have a Linksys router for 4 systems. Did an install of 10.0 on my laptop with no internet connection problems. Are you set up for Lan connection? How about your workgroup name?
  4. I did an install of 10.0 on my Inspiron 4000, actually I did an upgrade. All worked well, including the touchpad.
  5. There is a diskdrake problem with some harddrives. I ran into a similar problem trying to install 10.0. It is unable to read my hdb partition table (saying it is an EZ Drive). I've never had problems with any other installation with many distros. I filed a bug report and got back a reply asking me to check an alt1 install (2.4 kernel). Unfortunately I can not boot off of cd1, which is where alt1 is. Unless you need/want all the latest 2.6 stuff you should try 9.2. I find it very solid.
  6. Saw post about booting from cd2; did it and things booted well, but things fell apart at disk partitioning. My harddrives are hda all Windows 2000 (three partitions) and hdb Linux (Mdk 9.2, Suse, and empty space for 10). However the partitioning tool does not see anything on hdb. A bug here that was never here with 8.0-9.2, Suse, and Debian. It's a funny hd as it is a 75GB WD, but my Mobo can only see the first 33.8GB. I guess I'll have to report a bug. Anyone else have something like this?
  7. With my cable I got my isos pronto (avg 350-400KB/s), but can't get a boot off of cd1! Tried using my often used cdrw's in Linux and Win and a fresh cd-r, but it won't boot. Md5sums are fine. Yuck! Burned with crrecord and roxio.
  8. I tried to set up 10.0 rc1 today, but when it came to harddrive partitioning I ran into a problem.I want to put it on some empty space on hdb, but it does not see anything on my hdb (a number of partitions with 9.2 and Suse 9.0. Is this a known bug? Or is it a peculiarity of my system (hdb is a 75GB drvie, but my bios can only see 33.8 of it. That has not been a problem with any other installation). Hda has Win 2000 and Debian. Thanks.
  9. A problem came up on my son's Suse 9.0 system: he was unable to start KDE because of permission problems with .ICEauthority. Attempts to fix this have been unsuccessful. Attempts as root, even at run level 1, run into an inability of even root to access this and a few other files in his home directory. System is ok and other users can login and run without a problem. So why can't root even get at these files? I know I can create a new user and move the other data files, but I'd rather figure out how to fix this. Thanks.
  10. Not sure how to go between the twp boxes, but for a board there is xboard with linux. It has all sorts of options for internet chess. chack the man xboard. If there is an interest in playing vs the computer the best linux engine is crafty.
  11. If you are using a Pentium or Athlon go i586, others are for Mac (ppc), etc. Sparc is a Sun processor, Alpha is HP/Compaq 64 bit DEC processor, etc.
  12. Make sure the kernel-source you installed is the same version as the kernel you are using. The kernel on the mdk cd's had the LG problem. If you used the original kernel you are probably using a different source, that was patched for the LG problem.
  13. Linux only ( mdk 9.2, but I play around with Suse 9.0 and Debian) for 6 days of the week. Once a week I boot into Win 2000 for a short time and use quicken to update my finances. Also at this time of the year I also start doing my taxes with Turbotax. I've tried Moneydance and Gnucash and find both of them lacking. So maybe 1-2 hrs a week on Windows.
  14. Some more details would be helpful. How are you setting up your partitions? Expert? Also if you have two harddrives they should be hda and hdb, unsure what your hdc is (cdrom?). Two 2.1 GB hds will be pretty tight for an install, but should be ok. Anyway give us more info on your system and I'm sure many here will get you on your way.
  15. What distros are you talking about? Remember 700 mb is not 700,000,000 bytes. I've dl'd and burnt may distros (mdk, debian, suse, mepis, and knoppix) without problems. Depending on the distro you may only need cd1. I once did a suse and got the rest of my packages from a mirror. So with a bit more info you will probably get all the help you need here, a great site!
  16. My son has finally ditched windows and wonders about software for playing his avi files. I wonder what you all would reccomend. Steve Scrimpshire, if you read this, he is running my old Gateway system with the kadoka mb. Suse 9 installed without a hitch.
  17. From the File menu in Easy cd creator are you selecting to burn from a cd image?
  18. ram, ram, ram. I use 9.2 without trouble on a 533 piii, but with 512 ram.
  19. md5sum checked, guess I had a bad burn, will try again, thanks.
  20. I just burned the cds. I dl'd cd1 on 1/8 so I thought I had the fixed version, but it will not boot. Are there md5sums I can check for these, current, isos? Or is cd1 still not right?
  21. Use spadmin to add the ms fonts. in a console cd to /usr/lib/openoffice/program and the ./spadmin. Then select fonts. It's all pretty straight forward, just add the fonts from your win partition. Do this as root .
  22. As there is no data to lose there can be no data loss. Also you can't do a full Windows install in 45 minutes! There are many reboots and then you will have drivers, etc to install, and recent patches. A long process as I can attest in having to do this to one of my son's machine.
  23. If you are still waiting for the new system you may want to first off reinstall Win xp and use its own partitioning to set up an NTFS partition and a Fat32. I know this is easily done with win 2000 and assume this is still ok in xp. If it is a fresh system with no data that can be messed up you can also try mandrake and there is no loss. Also why not 9.2, as I understand the NTFS tools are better.
  24. I finally got my printer going, but I am not sure how or why. I went back to scratch, and since I am on vacation this week and have time I reinstalled 9.2, and had Samba up and working before even trying to set up my printer. I also reset my router as the DHCP clients table was not right (for all I know that has been the problem all along). I then set up the printer and, presto, I can print. The router is a Linksys BEFSR41 V.2, I'll have to look into this more.
