  1. You downloaded Mandriva One, and not the actual install CD's. AFAIK, the Mandriva One CD's do not allow for upgrading from previous versions - you'll have to grab the full install DVD/CD set for that.
  2. You should not need fstab entries for your removable devices. HAL/DBUS should handle the mounting of these automatically. If you have fstab entries for these devices, it may actually cause problems. I would not change the proc and swap lines at all, as they are fine in your original fstab (yes, proc should have "none" as the device). I also would not remove the tmp directory. In fact, if I were you, I wouldn't mess with the fstab at all, aside from removing the entries for the floppy and cdrom drives.
  3. It all depends on how they set up the wireless. If they use simple browser authentication, it's not usually OS-specific, but, that's not always the most secure way to do it...I'm not sure how the places that forced you into XP had it set up (VPN or something?).
  4. I think Judge Kimball had his mind made up a while ago, but he had to go through all the motions...you could easily see his irritation and distaste for SCO (and their shenanigans) in his responses throughout the trial.
  5. There's a large difference between asking questions and criticizing without evidence. You didn't ask what happened before you started throwing criticism around, and that's not well justified, in terms of management ;)
  6. Personally, I don't think having a bad beta ISO is an issue that will hurt their business, especially if the problem is recognized and resolved in a timely manner - and, so far, we have no evidence to the contrary - yet you continue to criticize - again, it seems like you've just been looking for an excuse to do so. As far as I can tell, if they ever make any mistakes at all, you'd get on them for it (justified or not) - you don't happen to be a manager at your day job, do you? ;)
  7. Putting out beta ISO's is part of a community process; getting the community involved is the whole point of doing it (as well as cooker). The business process you are looking for (apparently) would be their retail CD and DVD boxes, which this wasn't a part of, so you seem to be criticizing them for involving the community? If you are attempting to argue that Mandriva should not involve the community in their beta process, and should close it up since they sell their end product, or something to that end, that is a whole different discussion and one we certainly shouldn't burden this thread with. If that's not what you're saying, then I seem to be lost as to what your argument is. Oh well, moving on...
  8. :lol2: I knew you were going to say that. Do you really think it's worth the pain of setting up a password, giving that password out to all the possible people who would want to mirror (and, thereby requiring anyone who wants to mirror to request the password), having to try to keep the password out of the public (yeah...like it wouldn't get leaked) just to keep a some anxious people from grabbing an ISO that they should know better than to get prior to an official release announcement anyways? No, I don't think so. And you are still criticizing them based on your own assumptions, since there are no real facts about how the file got corrupted, exactly when they noticed it, and exactly how long after it was originally uploaded it was fixed - not to mention that, without an official release announcement, no one should have been touching the file anyways. Without further details your criticism is groundless, which is the reason I'm responding to it as I am.
  9. I had an SLI setup but never ran into any issues, however that wasn't in Mandriva. What's the process you are going through to set it up? IIRC, I simply had to install the NVIDIA drivers and add one line to xorg.conf, are you doing more than that?
  10. Dude, are you serious? Give me a break. It has to be publicly available at some point prior to "official" release so that anyone mirroring can sync and get the files. IMHO, what would be worse is of QC kept the file hidden until right before an announcement, and then every mirror is running to sync at the same time every one else is trying to download, completely killing speeds from the main server, delaying everyones download and the amount of time it would take for mirrors to sync, thereby compounding the problem.
  11. You misread what I said, I think. They couldn't test it until it was fully uploaded. I personally don't know the exact hour, second and millisecond original was uploaded, or when they found the error and began uploading the new one. Apparently you do? Because you're certainly ready to criticize based on a single post, it would seem. Not to mention that, based on every post referring to it I've looked at, it appears they found the error and began uploading the new DVD rather quickly (ever upload a DVD ISO? Ever tried to sync a crap ton of mirrors?). In less than a few hours from the initial upload, and at most in less than a day. Personally, I think you just feel the need to cut on Mandriva, since there is no evidence giving reason to do so, aside from your own assumptions.
  12. It's completely possible that the file was corrupted during the original upload. QC wouldn't have caught something like that until after the upload had finished. I'd personally give them credit for correcting it so quickly.
  13. What video card driver/module are you using? nv, nvidia, vesa? If you're unsure, post the contents of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, or check via Mandriva Control Center (AKA Configure My Computer) in the Hardware section.
  14. Always use the proper tool for the job. A hydrospanner isn't particularly good for juicing your fruit, and a web browser should only be used as...a web browser.
  15. Try this site or consider purchasing a book if you prefer something you can access off-line.
  16. It sounds like your user isn't using the bash shell (that's my best guess, anyways). I'm not 100% sure where this is set right now, however.
  17. I believe installing librsvg as I suggested here solves the issue with beryl-settings not starting, but the guy in that thread never really confirmed it. As far as avi files not playing...what do you get? A black screen? Distorted? What player are you using? Somewhere in the player there should be a place where you can select what it outputs to. By default this is usually xv, if you can find this option change it to x11. If you can't find the option let us know what player you're using and we can try to find it.
  18. Is this issue with Ubuntu or Mandriva? (just to clarify)
  19. ATI cards aren't the best at 3d desktops. The card, alone, may be an issue. Under (most) 3d desktops you will always get "direct rendering: No" back from glxinfo. read - basically, for it to work, you have to use the proprietary driver.
  20. Do you expect the companies that make distributions to support there software forever? They can only support a certain version for so long. And here's a list of Linux distributions/versions you can install Firefox on: All of them. I mean, just because Mandriva doesn't make an RPM, doesn't mean you can't install it. It just means Mandriva stopped supporting that version of their distribution (You're list includes 5 versions MS no longer supports).
  21. You could also always use your monitors adjustment tools. Though, if you're dual-booting and it looks fine in the other OS, I imagine you wouldn't want to re-adjust on each reboot.
  22. You may need to give it a little time before the install program loads; since it's a LiveCD it can be slow to start things occasionally (eveything has to be loaded into RAM). If you have, however, given it significant amounts of time to start the install program (say, 2+ minutes) then there may be another issue, and my first suggestion would be to check the md5sum of the file and re-burn at a slower speed.
  23. I used KDE before...but then I found GNOME. My main issue with KDE has always been the lack of good themes: I could never find one I liked. All my other complaints about it aren't show-stoppers.
  24. Haha, yeah, I should post a screenshot of my mac desktop...but I think I'll have to change it up a bit first. I was actually expecting a comment from mysti, since her and I have had a few GNOME v. KDE debates :D
