  1. Doesn't look much different than the DEV versions. Most likely just got cleaned up and got all the bugs ironed out from 1.3 versions (which were small and minor as far as I seen) ??? I did see we support those EXIF tags now <insert woohoo here>
  2. or is it ? cd New\ /Folder/ I still have problems when there is spaces. What I would do is: cd New THEN, hit the <tab> key and let it complete the line automatically. PS: cd .. takes you up a directory
  3. Welcome and congrats on getting a GUI, Here's my brief overview (remember I am not responsible for any broken systems :P ) start up: System --> Configuration --> Packaging --> Software Media Manager you will log in with root password click "Add" check FTP server and fill in some blanks: Name: <any name> Path: <ftp://some.server.com/Mandrake-devel/stable/i586/Mandrake/RPMS.cooker/> hdlist: <../base/hdlist.cz> click "OK" and you will see it examine the source and download the hdlist in rpmdrake then you should be able to go to System --> Configuration --> Packaging --> Install Software and be able to select "All packages, by update availability"
  4. sorry chris z, that made no sense to me. And the CDs I have been trying were all single session, dao. I was able to clear something up by using the "eject" feature and by reinserting the disk. This would allow me to see all the files on a disc. But more "weirdness" today. I copied a CD full of RPMs into my /home and the filenames changed from what was on the disc. For whatever reason, the names were truncated to 31 charactors or less. I tried it again and got the full filenames this time. Maybe I burned these with the Joliet and the Rock Ridge format. Maybe the disk from yesterday was only burnt using the Joliet format. Maybe this is the source of these problems... I don't remember. I need a format that works in all OS's and doesn't truncate the filenames. I am getting confused. thanks for the replies.
  5. Poking around mousedrake and I end up with the same symptoms here now. If I get the wheel working it was only the down direction. I ended up edited the XF86confiig-4 file just as bvc and got mine back in order. (I am not going back into mousedrake to see what its set at now ;) )Its not right, but I guess you just need to play around with it till it works. OR maybe (hopefully) the updates will fix it right ( I haven't tried any updating yet)
  6. Just noticed mine goes back too. :o You can also try opening a terminal / console su <password> mousedrake Then pull the plug for a couple seconds and reinsert it. Then set it and hopefully that test thing comes up to confirm the proper settings. Have you tried bvc's way yet ?
  7. tyme is prolly right, but have you seen this site? http://registry.gimp.org/index.jsp I am not sure what language PS plugins are written in, but gimp's are written in PERL, Script-FU, Python... but even if they are the same language, PS prolly relies on dll files to make them work.
  8. You running KDE ? Try installing KsCD. My xmms did same thing until I installed KsCD. I have no idea why I had to install it so xmms would play. I just tried it when I saw the new auto play scripts were set to KsCD.
  9. What do you mean by "winks out" (is that like a *poof*) ? Which kernel are your running ? And what for nVidia version? I am curious because of my situation (I am currently using a tnt2 32 meg AGP card): http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=12564 I had no problems till 10 CE with this card. Just slow frame rates. And right now, all seems well.
  10. Yes, its happening all over mandy world. For me, my Logitech USB optical wheel was plugged in a USB 1 port and worked for the install except for the wheel part. Afterwards I went into the "configure your computer" --> hardware --> mouse and changed it from Universal to PS/2 Generic PS2 Wheel Mouse and it works now. Others report success by unplugging from the USB port and using the PS/2 port to install and then changing back to the USB afterwards.
  11. I was trying to browse a CD (with Konq) that I know has 675 megs of zip files on it, but only 30 megs worth were showing up. and If I try to browse the CD through the desktop icons, I get this error message: Error - KIOExec Retrieving data from devices is not supported What's up with this ? I am not comprehending what may be going wrong here. Is it a package I failed to install or something new I must configure with MDK 10 CE ? tia
  12. XFdrake Should get an option in there to choose it. Don't forget to test it before leaving this screen. I had one of those S3 Virge cards back with Mandrake 8.0 and was never able to upgrade to XFree 4... had to stay with 3.3.6.
  13. Thanks Ix, I think that somehow confirms my thinking, which is more a combo of three of those factors. A new kernel, with an old video card that isn't really supported by the newer video drivers. I have had problems getting the latest nVidia driver to work (one of the 5000 series) and settled on the 4620 "patched" version. I decided to replace the tnt2 32 meg card with a gForce 4000 128 meg, so hopefully that will take care of this. (Then I can also finally replace that S3 virge 4 meg card in my other box ;) )
  14. Since my install of MDK 10 CE, my machine has rebooted on its own maybe twice (similiar to a windows stop error). Today, I was just reading a web page and *poof* I am staring at a black screen and had trouble getting it started again past the initial post. Any ideas if this could be a kernel 2.6 thing, video driver thing (which was the case with my windows stop errors awhile ago) or maybe some hardware problem?

    New To Linux

If you haven't done so already, check here for known problems with 10 CE: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=12484 To fix that drive: http://us.lgservice.com/ For background info on the LG / 9.2 problem: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/lgerrata.php3 Hope it works out this time. :D
  16. Ok, normally I use mozilla, but will try this in konq Release 3.2 BRANCH >=20040204 and MDK 10 CE (no updates) Will hit the "add reply" button now... so if this posts then my answer is no, doesn't happen to me. Sounds like a strange one.
  17. Besides the "Unable to boot from CD1" and "Unable to read partition table (of /dev/hda) when a SCSI CD-ROM is on the system" there seems to be a few other things to be prepared for (just in case) 1) USB mouse sometimes not recognize. Easiest thing is to use one of those adaptors and the PS/2 port just to install... should just work afterwards. (Strange, eh?) 2) Users have also been experiencing a problem when installing with XP: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=12218 http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=12423
  18. You trying to start one of those "distro" type wars now. lol I think the major diff is only in the way it looks and feels to your personnal senses. Some may argue that gnome is much more stable. I may agree with that, but do use KDE here, mostly because the apps I use most often are k-apps. (don't really matter tho, you can run gnome apps in kde and vice-versa anyway.) Congrats :D and welcome to linuxland
  19. That may worth a shot here. Sounds like something is messed up between your user and kde. to reinstall KDE (from a command line): urpme kdebase rmdir .kde urpmi kdebase NOTE: this .kde dir contains the configs and settings that I am guessing are messed up here. (including that knotify thing)
  20. Always good to have a spare floppy drive available. Maybe even a USB floppy? Don't forget... latest info is available here: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/lgerrata.php3
  21. I think that would be a great thing to have available at this time. I read something about a 9.2.1 version that was released to club members, but I can't seem to find this available to the public. A 9.2.1 version would be good for those wanting a new shiney Linux and are hesitant to install version 10 RC --- eh, I mean 10 CE. Anyone know anything about how to snag this 9.2.1 version?
  22. Knotify is defianately a part of KDE. Did you try starting as root or user? I would probably want to reinstall KDE ( KDE can be finicky sometimes). If you do, don't forget to either delete or rename the hidden .kde folder in your /home/user. Can you start up another desktop or window environment?
  23. Any chance you got any other partitions you may or may not have forgotten about on your drives? Such as a system backup partition you get with OEM win setups. How about a card reader? They should be sdb and sdc, but maybe got confused with hdx.? BTW: I am happy with 10 CE
  24. Full information available here: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/lgerrata.php3
  25. You know that page that opens up in your favorite browser when you first start it? Well, I went and redone it (like I had nothing better to do). I added the google search back in (always came in handy), realigned the page to fit the window better, and added a few links to the best Mandrake sites on the web. Don't know if anyone would care to even use it, but I will share it anyway. You would need to rename and replace this file: file:///usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html index2.html
