  1. I'm not sure why you mention laptops in your reply. I have a desktop PC. I don't have the option to turn of Plug and Play in my BIOS. I'm new enough that I don't know what that statement means. I appreciate all of your feedback, however. Further clarification would be even MORE appreciated! :D
  2. I tried what you suggested bvc, and the sound still does not work. I guess I should maybe modify my topic to say "all Dell SB Live card owners are screwed.' Thanks for your suggestion, bvc. I guess I'm reduced to no sound for now. I've googled for hours and tried so many things. MAJOR bummer.
  3. Here are the contents of my /etc/modules.conf file: probeall scsi_hostadapter imm ppa probeall usb-interface usb-uhci alias eth0 8139too above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1
  4. I guess the motherboard info didn't help any. I knew it! SB Live sound card owners ARE screwed!
  5. Motherboard information: ============== Motherboard: CPU Type Intel Pentium 4A, 2400 MHz (4.5 x 533) Motherboard Name Dell Computer Corporation Dimension 8200 Motherboard Chipset Intel Tehama i850E System Memory 512 MB (RDRAM) BIOS Type Phoenix (09/13/02) Communication Port Communications Port (COM1) Communication Port ECP Printer Port (LPT1 =============== Additional motherboard info: =============== Motherboard Motherboard Properties: Motherboard ID <DMI> Motherboard Name Dell Computer Corporation Dimension 8200 Front Side Bus Properties: Bus Type Intel NetBurst Bus Width 64-bit Real Clock 133 MHz (QDR) Effective Clock 533 MHz Bandwidth 4267 MB/s Memory Bus Properties: Bus Type Dual RDRAM Bus Width 16-bit Real Clock 400 MHz (DDR) Effective Clock 800 MHz Bandwidth 3200 MB/s Motherboard Manufacturer: Company Name Dell Computer Corporation Product Information http://www.dell.com BIOS Download http://support.dell.com ===================================
  6. I did just what you said, and it looks as though the settings are being stored. I'm running GNOME, but when I typed 'kmix' from the command line, I got a ton of messages - most of them warnings, but the last few messages were the following: ==================================== Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed kmix: ERROR: Alsa mixer cannot be found. Please check that the soundcard is installed and the soundcard driver is loaded. kmix: kmix: ERROR: Alsa mixer cannot be found. Please check that the soundcard is installed and the soundcard driver is loaded. ==================================== Does that help troubleshoot the problem at all? And one other thing, in the Control Center, under the heading of "Uknown/Others" in the Hardware section is listed [sB Live! Value] Input Device Controller. And then in the information window, I see the following: =========== Vendor: ‎Creative Labs Bus: ‎PCI Bus identification: ‎1102:7004:1102:1003 Location on the bus: ‎2:9:1 Description: ‎[sB Live! Value] Input device controller Module: ‎unknown Media class: ‎INPUT_OTHER =========== Once again, any help is appreciated. Thanks for all of the suggestions so far.
  7. Well, I didn't think I had on-board sound, but I will double check the BIOS anyway. I'm new enough that I'm not sure I know what you mean by "try the OSS driver." Although I did see a lot of talk about OSS drivers in my search for a solution on the net. (By the way, after reading something on the net, I did a modprobe pcspkr at the command line, and that was successful at allowing me to hear the lovely beeps out of the PC speaker. )
  8. I went into alsamixer and found a couple fields labeled 'ac97' something and I made sure those were turned all the way down/off. Still no sound. So I rebooted, double checked the ac97 settings were unchanged, and still no sound. Any other suggestions?
  9. From what I've gathered from searching the web for hours, the SB Live no-sound issue is common. But all I want to do know is....does a solution exist? I feel like I've tried every suggested fix in all the different threads relating to this issue, and nothing works. I'm running MDK 10 CE. Mandrake Control Center says this about my sound card: =================================== Vendor: ‎Creative Labs Alternative drivers: ‎audigy:emu10k1 Bus: ‎PCI Bus identification: ‎1102:6:1102:1003 Location on the bus: ‎2:9:0 Description: ‎[sB Live! (By the way, the mic is muted, and I've check to make sure all the appropriate volumes are not muted via the volume control and alsamixer.)
  10. I'm running Mandrake 10 CE, and I'm using Gnome. I can't get my sound to work (even after reading some of the other threads in here). My sound card is described in the Mandrake Control Center as ' ‎[sB Live! Value] EMU10k1X'. I tried the alternative driver and still got nothing. Also, I can't access anything on my CD-ROM drives that are mounted in /mnt. Here are the drive descriptions: HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCE-8481B (which is a CD-ROM) HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCR-8481B (which is a CD-RW) They appear to mounted as... /dev/hdc /dev/hdd These aren't the same LG CD drives that I've read about getting fried in Mandrade 9.2, are they? Do I need to download and install new drivers to get these things working? Of course, since I'm a Linux newbie, I've never downloaded and installed new drivers for a device before.
  11. Well, I re-installed yet again and specified that I wanted GNOME instead of KDE as my startup manager. And, I am posting this message from Mandrake Linux now! Woo-hoo! But, I kind of feel like I'm missing out on what KDE is...you know, so that I can try it out and compare it to GNOME. Maybe when I'm feeling 'brave' I'll try re-installing KDE like you suggested. It's all new enough to me that I'm going to try to feel my way around GNOME just to get some experience. Major differences between GNOME and KDE are what?
  12. I'm not sure if I know enough to even answer that question. I believe during installation I set it up to log in as a user automatically. I'm a big enough newbie that I don't know how to reinstall KDE. Could you provide any links or instructions to help me along? Maybe I should try re-installing and telling it that I want GNOME to be my environment on startup instead of KDE. I don't believe so. I can ctrl-alt-f1 into a console and access everything, but when I try something like xinit or startx it says: "Using authority file /home/'username'/.Xauthority Writing authority file /home/'username'/.Xauthority Fatal Server error: Server is already active for display 0 I've tried re-installing 3 different times now, and it's the same problem every time. I posted this in another thread, but I keep running into these two error messages during install: xscreensaver-4.14-4mdk.i586 did not install properly, continue anyway? xpdf-3.00-5mdk.i586 did not install properly, continue anyway? I answer yes to those questions.
  13. I keep running into problems when Linux is trying to boot. I installed Mandrake 10 CE on a slave drive today, and it will not boot up completely. (I'm the "newbie" who started the 'Total Newbie attempting to install Manrake' thread.) Anyway, when Linux is starting up, it shows that KDE 3.2 is loading up, and it goes through all those icons until it is 85% done and it just stops on that last icon with the test reading "Restoring session". The icon it stops on looks like a big 'K' with a sun behind it. The sun is flashing. INitially, I noticed that there is actually an error message behind the KDE startup logo. The message says, "During previous startup, Knotify crashed while instantiating Knotify. Do you want to try again or disable aRts sound output." If I click "Try Again" the system just hangs. If I click "Disable" the system just hangs. Suggestions? What is "Knotify?"
  14. Yet another update.... I just let my PC sit for a while until I decided to reboot one more time, and this time I was asked all those survey questions and what desktop I wanted to use, etc. Then it showed that KDE 3.2 was loading up, and it went through all those icons until it was 85% done and it just stopped on that last icon. It looks like a big 'K' with a sun behind it. The sun is flashing. Then I notice that there is actually an error message behind the KDE startup logo. The message says, "During previous startup, Knotify crashed while instantiating Knotify. Do you want to try again or disable aRts sound output." If I click "Try Again" the system just hangs. If I click "Disable" the system just hangs. Suggestions? What is "Knotify?"
  15. Well, this is interesting. I RE-installed, and I never re-encountered the screen where I can set where Lilo is put, but apparently it was put in the right place because I now get Lilo when I reboot. When I chose Linux this time, I didn't get all that configuration stuff such as desktop theme, etc. It just hangs there with a blue screen and an 'X' for a mouse pointer. The only way to get out of the 'hang' is to reboot. (The mouse is working though...I can move the 'X' around.) Other tidbits: When the system is booting up, my printer (HP 952C) attempts to print something, but must hit an error because the error light flashed on the printer, and the paper doesn't come out. After hitting the paper feed the sheet of paper comes out with a single character at the top left. (The test page printed just fine during installation.) Also, I got these error messages during installation. They were: xscreensaver-4.14-4mdk.i586 did not load correctly. xpdf-3.00-5mdk.i586 did not load correctly. (I checked all the ISO's with MD5's, and everything was OK.) I'm at a loss now. Anyone with some help? (Thanks for all the help so far.)
