  1. If your friend is still willing, I would ask him to do it again and run the md5sums right after the burn so you know you are getting good cd's. Here is a site to get the sums for Windows: ftp://ftp.e-smith.net/pub/e-smith/contrib...DOSWindowsApps/. You might want to go over this how-to for extra advice: http://www.e-smith.org/docs/howto/CD_burni...ning_howto.php3 . Counterspy
  2. After discussing this for more opinions, I think this should be a topic on its own. Knowing there is a place to go for the conversion to Windows would be a significant addition to this board further carving out an identity of our own. The oringinal author should put it on Board Feature Requests when the time is right. Other issues could include some that are now posted to other boards. Counterspy
  3. It is my view that all of these combo boot managers like System Commander and Boot Magic should have nothing to with a Linux system. They add an unpredictable level of complexity to the boot process which is badly designed by both Intel and Microsoft. Both Lilo and Grub have achieved a level of performance that makes these addons unnecessary. Counterspy
  4. I can help you with the sound card. Run a program called sndconfig in command mode. Counterspy
  5. I would seriously consider putting it togther yourself. The knowledge you will gain is worth far more than $130 to put the system together for you (unless there is a warranty). Tell is a little more about that scsi zip drive and the means of driving it. Onboard or card? Or something else. Otherwise it is a straightforward process. There is help here and scads of help at sites around the net for such a project. Counterspy
  6. Also go to the Mandrake Control Center and turn off services you don't need. Search the messages for a list of those you can safely turn off if your not sure yourself. Counterspy
  7. Try doing a hard drive install as discussed in the message one or two above this one near the end of the thread. That means direct from the download, not copying the CD back to the hard drive. Counterspy
  8. Mine does the flash without the click and can be seen with Gkrellm and process use of 16.4 Kb every four seconds when sitting at idle in KDE with or without anything else running. Since it makes no noise I have never bothered to trace down the process. Counterspy
  9. Find out the make and model of the board and find out if it listed on the Mandrake Hardware Database. Because of the number of problems reported here with on-board sound, modems, and raid support, I would avoid those boards. If you have peripherals you need and the board is supported, then that sounds like a clearance price. I would want to know whether it is Athlon or Intel Celeron or Pentium processor maximum CPU speed and maximum memory that it will support, number and type of slots, AGP, PCI, and ISA. Do you get a manual with it? Here is the URL for the Hardware Database: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hardware.php3 . If it is a significant improvement over your present setup or you want to build a second system, that is not bad for a Canadian clearance. If you have the time, looking up a review wouldn't be a bad idea. The two most credible sites for that would be http://www.anandtech.com or http://www.tomshardware.com . You would want similar information on the sound and network cards. For a total of C$130, those cards are roughly $50 each splitting the difference. Soundblaster cards are well supported in Linux in that price range. Not being into networks, I can't speak to that, so I would rely on the hardware sites for reviews, the database for compatibility, and other's experience using it. Counterspy
  10. I don't know if this helps or not, but neither 8.2 or 9.0 shut down completely but the screen goes black and the power switch works. In Windows, it shuts down as it should. You might test that if you have windows. Since I run 24/7, the problem is only occasional. I have both APM and ACPI turned off. Counterspy
  11. You should look at your motherboard manual for the way interrupts are shared between PCI slots and other devices. Unlike ISA boards, most all PCI boards share interrupts with other devices. This sharing goes across all hardware andmost peripherals, such a hypothetical PCI/USB sharing. Whether or not this is your problem, I can't be sure but it is where I would look first. Counterspy
  12. If you are looking for Mozilla with XFT support, have a look at Textar's RPM's accessible from http://www.pclinuxonline.com . It may not be the version you are looking for so take a look and decide for yourself. He also has a number of other programs there which may interest you including apt-get for Mandrake. Counterspy
  13. I don't use urpm in favour of Texstar's apt-get available through his site at http://www.pclinuxonline.com instead, in response to your first question. I will try with your second problem. Try rpm --rebuilddb from the command line and see if you still get an incorrect response. Counterspy
  14. I just looked at all the options in the drop down menus and could not find it either. I suggest you go to the open office web site and see if they have a reference there. Counterspy
  15. Is what you entered above an exact copy of what you put in 9.0? If not, try that. If you don't get a response from anyone else in a couple of days, try posting the question in the newsgroup alt.os.linux.mandrake. Counterspy

    Slow performance

You don't need to compile a new kernel. Just put lilo nopentium in the append section under lilo in the boot section>boot config in the Mandrake Control Center. When you bring up the box it should be clear. That may solve the problem. Counterspy
  17. Alternatively you could do an install from your hard disk. You can get at the instructions from this site: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/fdoc.php3 . You can select the manual you need from the drop down box. In this case you want the first one. It will also be in the ISO and can be extracted with a program liike winimage 5.x. Sorry I don't have the URL for it, but Google should come to your rescue. Counterspy
  18. Namibia turned down M$ offer and opted for open source, after they costed out M$'s "gift". Counterspy
  19. Oh so typical. They didn't take the time to revise it or edit the revision. Now all they need to do is act on the results. Counterspy
  20. See the permissions section at http://www.mandrakeuser.org for how to configure who can get at what. You may find other information there useful as well. Counterspy
  21. That diatribe on grc.com is a pile of crap. Spend some time in the newsgroups there before you buy into that kind of information. That's news.grc.com . The Shields Up test has been used by 16 million users and its limits are clearly set out as far as the number and function of scanned ports is concerned. There are more complete scans at other sites listed at http://balder.prohosting.com/~bud01/scan.html which porvides a list of various sites that offer this service, some for a fee. Here are some others: http://www.sdesign.com/ , and http://www.hackerwhacker.com/ . Nmap is Linux port scanner you can run yourself: http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ . Counterspy
  22. Are these machines identical or from the same manufacturer? If not, go over carefully what was done on each machine, including the selection of options, both in install and in browser configuration. It would help us to know what machine(s) and their configuration you are using to narrow down the problem. Random faults are the most difficult to debug, and it could be something as dumb as choking on the increasing number of sites that do not accept any browser other than IE, although you usually get notified in some way in that sitation. See if you can detect a pattern in the crashes that may not be immediately obvious. The last possibility is a defective install cd. You might think of that as a remote possibility. Counterspy
  23. I assume you looked at this site but if not here it is: http://www.xfree86.org/ . In particular there is a reference in the support section to a mailing list and newsgroup. You may have to put your question on one of these if you get no answer here. Counterspy
  24. I found out for myself and the answer is no, it won'tscale down that far. Counterspy
