Just wondering, and perhaps a bit a stupid question: what about using tar? And what are the differences between Ghost / Paragon / Acronis compared to tar? (Must admit: never used tar for backup)

I have an HP Officejet 6110; installation with printerdrake worked, printing is OK. Even is printerdrake stated that my Officejet can be used to scan, I can not get it to work. (I have mandrake 9.1 installed). Does anybody has made similar experience, or can anybody give me useful hints? (Browsing through web pages, trying with various (x)scanimage commands etc. did not help. Only positive result: sane-find-scanner brings found USB scanner (vendor..., product...) at libusb:001:002

To install Flightgear under Mdk 9.1, you need libmetakit-2.4.6-3mdk and flightgear, both packages available as .rpm from ftp://ftp.mandrakeusers.com/pub/Contrib. First install the libmetakit, then flightgear; otherwise you get an error message when installing flightgear. When starting Flightgear, I see a cockpit panel and outside a runway and I hear an intermittend sound of a motor - no idea yet how to proceed...

As this mdbtools seems to be just what I need, I downloaded a rpm package of mdbtools. When trying to install it (coubleclick on downloaded file, rpmdrake starts), I get a message that libreadline.so.4 is missing. Found this, tried to install the rpm, get message that libc.so.6 is missing. I fear I can continue this way ad infinitum. Was this procedure that I used (download rpm, double click) too simple? I use Mdk 9.0. Can anybody give me a hint how to proceed?

Thanks for the hint. This could do the job. Strange - I did a search with keyword "access" and "MS Access", but I did not find this thread.

Does anybody know a way to open under Linux a database created with MS Access 97 or MS Access 2000?

PCMCIA cards can "tell" the PC what their "name" is - but that does not mean that your PC has also the right driver for it. During installation (in case the PCMCIA NIC was inserted), the system should either have installed the right driver automatically, or it should have asked you which driver to install. If the card is rather new, maybe there is not yet a special driver for it. Maybe other drivers for similar cards (with same chip) work. You may look in the hardware compatibility list.

A bit more info to this topic. Today I tried Knoppix 3.1, and when starting I got Unknown bridge resource 2: assuming transparent PCI: device00:1f:1 not ..etc. etc. This "Unknown bridge..." is in addition, this "PCI.." is exactly the same error message as with Mandrake. So it seems to be a problem between kernel and the motherboard.

In case your CD is OK (if it is created from a download, you should check it with md5sum), I'd tend to blame your old CD writer. Could be the optical system is unclean, or the firmware is obsolete, or... Another reason could be faulty memory.

Whenever you install Mandrake with option "update", it takes into account what is already installed and installs in parallel to the existing system. In addition, it makes the appropriate entries into Lilo. That means that you have to install your extra OS before you install mandrake.

Counterspy, thanks for the hint. Indeed, interrupts are shared, this is indicated during the boot process, and the manual has a list of IRQ assignments, some markes as used, some marked as shared. Unfortunately, this is beyond my knowlegde so that I cannot make sense out of it. As everything I need is on board, all 6 PCI slots are empty. Any idea what I could try?

Does anybody know a flight simulator for Linux? I have enjoyed Flight Unlimited (I, II and III), and I am looking for something similar. (Must not necessarily for free...java script:emoticon(%27%3Alol%3A%27)

If it is for the document format: I don't use .doc format, I use .rtf (rich text format), and I can exchange documents with MS Word without problems.

Thanks for your answer. Everything seems to work (at least I could not identify a malfunction), including sound. Does anybody have a clue what this PCI:device:00:1f.1 means? Tech support from Asus: I sent them a message and got back a pre-canned answer promising a detailed answer later. Weeks later, nothing more. Does anybody know how to contact Asus to get an answer?

Sorry, perhaps not the answer you expetced: I use OpenOffice, and it does the job for me quite well.
