  1. I have NFS mount points from old networks and I want to get rid of those. How can I get this nfs deleted forerver. MCC is great to setup mount points and stuff liket that but they dont have a way to get rid of it. Another question is if there is any difference between NFS mountpoints and partition mountpoints. The problem is that I usually got old memory stick mountpoints that just don't go away, even when I delete them I get them back. I wonder if it's all on the fstab file or on the samba one and is there a GUI setup or is everything done from the command line (not that I am afraid) but I want to have the easy choice for Linux novice.
  2. Hi John, is a laptop and sometimes I swap pcmcia cards. On the other hand thought, I also get on harddrake some modules that are labled as unknown. These are i8k and pkg8kultils which are the one that handle the fan on the Dell Laptops. I dunno why ever since a few days ago are labeled as unknown.
  3. so i go to harddrake2 and I get a list of unrecognized modules, one is i8k and the other is 8kutils. # modinfo i8k filename: /lib/modules/2.6.8-0.rc2.2mdk/kernel/drivers/char/i8k.ko.gz author: Massimo Dal Zotto (dz@debian.org) description: Driver for accessing SMM BIOS on Dell laptops license: GPL parm: force:Force loading without checking for supported models parm: restricted:Allow fan control if SYS_ADMIN capability set parm: power_status:Report power status in /proc/i8k vermagic: 2.6.8-0.rc2.2mdk 586 gcc-3.4 The problem with this modules is that are the major reason why my laptop take ages too boot. I get a 10-15 minute freeze on my laptop everytime is triying to mount the file systems. This mean that on the boot process (the list with the OK) it get stuck right after mounting the swap detecting devfs instead of udev and then the mounting filesystem is just stuck for 10 min. The i8k module is used for Dell laptops so I think that is vital to the boot process and vital to being recognized. (I am on a Inspiron 4000).
  4. I used Partition magic and re-format the NTFS with Fat32, this is a safe way since it don't delete your data. My setup is quite nice, I got a dualboot Linux/Windows system but the hd just hold the systems, windows2k syste is on NTFS but the actual program files, are on an external HD with Fat32, so all my data is readable from Widnows or Linux.
  5. Actually mandriva recognized it Right away, no ndiswrapper needed. :)
  6. Whenever I boot I get this lines, I dont understand them well what it all means. But I guess I'll rather ask you guys and get a clear knowledge of what it's going on. I know that devfsd and udev has are layers to identify devices. I think udev is newer than devfsd, however I don't know which is better and what will be different on my system. Finally I wonder if I have udev how can I use it or configure it if its necesary. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  7. I recently activate my laptop's ehternet card, since then I have experience very slow booting thing. Mainly is when the system is checking for Swap partition and Mounting local filesystem. There is no error flag but I think is either not finding a file or something similar. Can anyone help me... regards.. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  8. OpenDocuments is becomming the standard of office productivity files. Linux is the platform that supports most of the office suite that already support the odf. My project intend to make linux libraries that will make odf manipulation from the command line. So the project will be creating a libodf libraries and a odf-tools on a similar way the vorbis-tools, swftools, mpeg-tools, wp-tools etc... odf-tools will have tools to read odf into stout, to list and transform the metadata of the odf files. So for example you will type: odcomment -t 'My OpenDocument File' -s 'office suites' -k 'opendocuments oasis openoffice.org' -c 'this is a comment' myodf.odt -t = title -s = subject -k = keywords -c = comments
  9. Hi I wonder if anyone know if the DELL Wireless Card is compatible with mandriva. Since Dell is not a manufacturer I think DELL is an OEM. I wonder if I can get the true model of the hardware. I know the FCC ID is: IMRWLPCE24H Also the DS/N is: TW-057FUY-41160-0AA-17XS On the back i also read the Lucent Technologies text appear next to Dell which make me asume this card is from the first but I am not sure if they can get to connect with the Mandriva Hardware List.
  10. So I have domain name localhost and Mandrake keeps complaining that is not a valid name and that if I want to use the tools I need to change the name and readjust my hostname. I also have past experience that changing the hostname provides me conflicts with Gnome and also apache where localhost = 127.0.0.1 and I wonder if there is safe to just readjust it like that. Can anyone explain a way to do this without avoiding possible conflict.
  11. I want to set up the icons in gnome, unfortuantely i only find the option of choosing individual files. How can I go about setting icons to all the *sxw *odt files in my gnome sesssion. I currently just have a generic folder icon and I want to change it to some new SVG Icons I found. Which command start the gnome-mime-type editor. Thanks. 12. right, but I doubt these users don't use any IM protocol until google came along.
  13. Mandriva has a certified hardware database which you can look for different components (like PCMCIA wireless cards) and will hav ea peer reviewed document rating the grade of compatibility. http://www1.mandrivalinux.com/en/hardware.php3
  14. I never have/never will have an anti-virus and had surfed daily for the past umm 8 years. I had my laptop hacked (using windows) in 98 - 97. And Spyware has come and go thought. Security is a state of mind. If you have a gf with basic computing needs. I think is better to teach her how to use a LiveCD. Is the most secure thing out there since the OS is on a CD and the DATA is on the Harddrive. I suggest to use a USB key instead thought since this is usually safer.
  15. I don't think I want UNIX as a desktop. :P However I have been checking out the enlightment, demos and they simply look amaizing. However I preffer using my humble but stable xfce. B)
  16. There is also the option of MythTV live CD's they are much easier to install even better. You can download a video of how to set up all this explained by Kevin Rose (from TechTV/G4). I had that video it was pretty fun to watch it the page is: systm.org the live CD he recomends was KnoppMyth. Said that, you MUST learn Unix. I won't call anyone a computer scientist if they don't know a real operating system linux/bsd/UNIX. If you want to understand mandrake in general we have a FAQ sections which is a compilations of 'Getting Started' tutorials. This will help you tink with your GNU/Linux distribution.
  17. Is funny how many people on the forum shout out their IM ID, however they have empty VCards.
  18. Anyone knows how to record audio from the commandline. Even more anyone knows a wave editor from the command line. I want to be able to record in realtime wave files with a set parameter and also have some noise reduction (optional). The most important thing is that they can record wave and I can pause the recording and continue later on. ecasound seems to do this, but I am not completely sure how to use it. I wonder if there is some other thing I should check out and also wonder if there are things that usually found on gui programs like audacity. I find the comand line more robust and less prone for errors.
  19. I just configure my GAIM to it. here are the google instructions: http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/ans...py?answer=24073
  20. What I did is that I uploaded to a freebo webmail account. That way it will reside forever there unless yahoo shuts geocities... and lycos do the same :)
  21. Thanks man, mail post is extremely unreliable but I'll move soon to the UK then we can make the arrangements. Thanks for everything. :) I can paypal you btw.
  22. Yeah right now I am on the end of the world.... I will need to wait until I am in a Real country to put an order :P

    Installing inkscape

Actually since I am not on line I had to download the whole FTP tree to my harddrive so I got all the repositories of the FTP sites (contrib) and it asked me for some perl modules that are simply not available as packages. That is my question how did people install it and which packages did it needed to install extra. My error message is that it lacks perl:XML:XQL and I couldnt get it to work.
  24. I did, I think the only packages I dont have is the xdiv-devel packages from plf. But my question is more like which packages should make it work. They seem to be quicktime files (in windows) but on linux the codec is simply not clear. I get to run the video but there is no audio. I think I got the right codec it just dont fully support it. Maybe is the audio Mhz or configuration file. I wrote them a note on their site, but never got a response.

    Installing inkscape

I said that I have a urpmi dependency hell? Guess not, but yeah is an urpmi dependency hell. I said, urpmi inkscape.... and I get. Can't install because unsupported package perl(XML-XQL). So yeah, I really dunno what todo, since I have most if not all of my perl-XML already installed and the ones left are pretty unrelated (XMLTV). So that is my issue, I know some sites list the requirements but I have spend several minutes triying those also and havent' came out with an answer. I would love to see a list of packages that are needed to be installed.
