As root, you can handle many services (sort of "frontends" for daemons) in Mandriva this way: "service <servicename> start | stop | restart | status" Guess this is what he meant, as you can access services also by entering their pathname, which would be /etc/init.d/<servicename>. So in short: the answer is yes (but no guarantee that it will work). Probably the author of btnx will find some Mandriva examples useful (like alsa, haldaemon, cups...) from /etc/init.d/.

(http://magrathea.dnsalias.net/~hubinger/kmf/kmf_doc/compilation.html) Besides from that, I would check which config files the app is using and where they reside. This can be checked by "urpmq -vil kmyfirewall". Defaults seem to lie in /usr/share. So if you're finding the corresponding filenames within your user dir from a previous installation, you should be able to go ahead. HTH, scoonma

Two possible reasons as my guess: a) Your USB drive is partitioned and your only seeing a small part of it. Is it the same USB drive you're booting from? Then you should not wonder why... b) Some of your Laptops memory will probably be used for GFX display (check BIOS settings).

Repartitioning won't hold your system back from booting a live CD. So after you've backed up probably important user data you still may want to use, you can simply go on (i.e. let it write the new partition table and proceed) .

Check out avidemux or kino. There are most likely qt-library (i.e. KDE integrated) based apps, too.

Hi folks, after several years without practice (and being quite a newbie with Linux in particular) I'm trying to create some useful shell script. It is a very early version yet. The aim is to split a given text file into numbered blocks ready to pass on as SMS to mobiles. How should that work? When it's full, a DVD can contain 4,7 GB of data, compared to a CD with 700MB. You could only split in a meaningful way if the data contains no installable programs, just raw data. If you had a DVD full of pictures for example, you could copy them onto your harddisk, make portions of max. 700MB size and create Data-CDs out of them and write to CDs. But this "generic" method would only make sense if the data is not interrelated. For installing purpose this would not work, for any DVD and/or OS.

Hi Paulo, normally you'd do that using MCC (Mandriva Control Center) / System Startup / Display Manager. After that also check your $HOME directory, it may contain the files .desktop and .dmrc, they should reflect your changes after restarting.

Can you recommend a good cooker mirror (preferably offering rsync support) better than nluug.nl? I'm using it for some time since it's even better than muenster, which gave me permanent lockups during downloads (both on rsync and ftp). EDIT: The cooker mirror I was referring to was muenster, not stuttgart, but problems are the same...

Hi there, today I wanted to transmit a bug report using bugzilla (see next posting). On "urpmi bugzilla" I found out that it depends on installing one out of four apache versions. This is definitely *not* what I wanted to do, installing a web server to an unstable version. If there's any other means to file bug reports, please let me know.

Suppose your system will be okay. In most cases bad signatures/md5sums indicate an error on the server you installed as repository. I stumble over these quite regularly. Check 24h later and everything will be okay in 90%. You can also choose a different mirror to download from, but if the error is in the original package, it will be distributed all over.
