  1. I only found SPAMHAUS the other day following links from the M$ anti-Spam article .... (Ooops - you say it just started ... your not using M$ software?? you sent someone at hotmail an email .... ) Hmmmmm. I'm too cynical, they wouldn't be doing that ... would they??? Deliberately assigning linux users as Spammers .... someone tell me I'm too bitter and twisted and they wouldn't do that under the cover of saving the world from SPAM .... Sorry, I don't know much about this but perhaps SPAMHAUS could help you by finding out where your blocked and giving you a clean bill of health???
  2. The free service you mention looks, well fine and free. Has anyone got much experience of different dynamicIP providers, I really need to get something but any personal recommendations would be great!
  3. You probably need to create a samba user and password. Personally I still use SWAT or CLI instead of the newer tools but thats just me.
  4. Unless your going through a mailserver which is knolw for Spam then you might just have inherited something. I think someone like www.spamhaus.org might be able to help you out if your IP is on the rockso blacklist.
  5. OK, shorewall was stopped and you tried access from your gateway/fw and it was VERY SLOW. So, its not shorewall. (At least something else is messing up). If you can I would try a seperate machine and configure it just to connect to the DSL modem and access the internet. When its working (a much simpler setup) you can check this was your other machine and find out what might be cuasing the problems.
  6. Hmmm could be a few things doing that. First off you need a safe way to shutdown without risking damaging your filesystems. One way: open a terminal, root shell. type : shutdown -h now You might still have problems with your display manager You can kill it explicitly using kill. There are a few options: xdm, kdm, gdm or mdkdm. ps -ef |grep dm should find it. The process number is uin the far left. You can kill it with kill -9 <procnum> Alternatively you should have an init script in /etc/init.d/<something to do thith dm> You can try running this script with a stop from a root shell and watch the errors. the syntax is: /etc/init.d/xdmxxx stop (the x's are where im notr sure cos im on a win machine right now) All the init scripts should have optional start|stop|restart|status This is pointed to from /etc/rc.d/rc5.d Sxxxxxxx in /etc/rc.d/rc4.d Kxxxxxxx (is the corresponding kill script)
  7. mmm,... i like that. Perhaps it can be done but I guess it will depend on the Window manager. I used to have a kde plugin that made konqueor generate a index.html for images, I guess something similar where you are prompted for a pop-up or something and it writes a xml index for the directory.
  8. Have you tried:::: http://www.heby.de/ltmodem They tend to be in a lot of laptoips, could be the same chipset as the lucent one which i got working on my laptop Anyway, woth a go before you part with your hard earned cah ... unless work are paying of course, then you can save your cpu cycles for latenight online gaming in the hotel
  9. A good policy to know what updated. Try find /etc -atime 1 (files modified in last 24 hours) find /etc/ -amin 60 (last hour) etc etc. I think youll find the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and depending what you changed /etc/resolve.conf (/etc/hosts) Its a long list .... try the -amin before you get more files :-) I think its OK from /etc but I might be wrong ...
  10. Well nealy, actually shorewall uses IPtables to route but thats a bit of a technicality Point is if you have good access from the firewall to internet when shorewall is disabled then you have a config problem in shorewall. If its the same its something else. If its shorewall then (having just done this myself) Id recommend using the shorewall provided config as opposed to the one set up by Mandrake which is more suitable for a standalone PC and apt to confuse you if you try reading the shorewall manualls or quickstart guide. Anyway, first can you access the internet OK from the forewall PC with shorewall disabled.??
  11. Have you tried restarting the service from the command line to see where it hangs?? You can switch on debugging Also you can force it to run in forgeground (-F) i think :-) Another point, if your firewalled you can force it to use a specific port instead of it randomlly requesting one. (p.s. I'm a big fan of using proper UNIX stuff instread of kludged Windows stuff like samba, not I don't think sabma is great, its just that two linux or unix machines sharing files by CIFS is a horrid thought !!! Sabma is great but its a compatibility with M$ utility. :-)
  12. I saw some agere modems discussed on a french linux site. Ill check it out (maybe later) It could be that they were saying there was no driver so don't hoild your breath. I was looking for my ethernet DSL modem so I didn't read them. Are you using 9.0 or 9.1.... I noticed some winmodems being supported under 9.1 that weren't under 9.0. I have a friend bought a 3com one and I know its working under Lycoris ... You might be more lucky doing a google search with the actual model number ?? unless your absolutely certain it won't work.
  13. Sorry is it a agere PC Card (PCMCIA Modem) or are you asking if you have the agere modem but you can't find a driver and what other type of PC card modem might work :-) Anyway, I think the agere modems might be supported, As I remember they were the old Wanadoo ones in France... (If you aren't comfortable posting in English, don't worry, someone will translate for you.) it might take a day.... p.s Just guessing from the make of your modem and short post :-)
  14. Thanks, sometimes I'm so lazy I miss new things that could make life easier .... Its like ftp clients ... I just stick to the CLi cause I know it and Im to lazy to try anything else. I'll have a look at partimage then ... the compression sounds interesting...
  15. Just an idea ! ugggh gotta get myself a nice handle.... All this 'Gowator' stuff is to formal mon pot.
  16. yeah i think the difference is the French add the final e in order to pronounce the t :-).... So I have a new word..... Anyway, thats the way i learned it all, 1 word at a time. (I didn't speak a word until I moved here, juste oui et non, merci est c'etait tout.) The grammer still get me though .... Ive got a great book Harraps dictionary of slang... It provides hours of pleasure not to meantion amusement for my friends! Donc ca marche bein et j'essayee e-emith dans un autre ordinator. Uggh I know the grammers wrong and i only have a UK keyb but ....
  17. I just urpmi'd from texstars site, Before you do this check out the easy urpmi at the plf site. It writes everything for you to add sources for both plf and texstar as well as contribs. Its automagic ... You can find the link to plf in the links section :-) under useful links....
  18. Actually I've been lazy. You'll notice Im doing a broadcast, like yeah Ive 253 PC's I didn't specify I just did a whole class C. Not the best way. Despite what I did I don't think its the best way but it works :-) When I get time I'm going to try LDAP but I havn't bothered getting DHCP and NIS working properly yet!! Yours should work ... try adding the natmask but ... Did you try external access without the firewall ??? could be your nfs port ???
  19. Like ranger says, this could be a sign of poor resolution. My nfs takes .... well no time at all. I take it were talking abouty the server, not the client? Are you granting your exports by name or IP??? Try just replacing the name in the /etc/exports with the IP instead. You can refresh the export list with exportfs -ra Heres mine exported to the local class 'C' RFC network. [root@shuttle proc]# more /etc/exports /home 172.16.122.0/255.255.255.0(insecure,no_root_squash,rw) Anyway, this isn't ideal but at least you know where the problem is ...
  20. Well, First thing you can do is check out if its something from the firewall. The Internet connection wizard is OK but its not really designed if your using it as a server. If your Windows PC's are having problems then the windows domaine controller might notbe helping but first you gotta sort out your internet connection. So your DSL router is connected via ethernet. The sharing connection wizard didn't work for me and left me in a bit of a mess. Anyway, first things, lets check if its your firewall. You need to use your gateway PC at this point. shorewall clear <typed as root> will turn off the firewall. If it gives you normal access when its off then its a pretty good bet its the firewall. I gave up on the sharing wizard. I used the configuration from shorewall themselves. I'd recommend trying this if your connection is playing up. Since your in init 3 and presuming you installed pppoe with the wizard you should have adsl-start adsl-connect etc. (adsl<tab> will give you a nice list in a bash shell :-)) So id say first thing is find out if it works with the firewall disabled. If it doesn't then hopefully we can look elsewhere for some clues but no point blindly speculating.
  21. Hey seriously well done and all. The thing is you must have been pretty determined and/or lucky. Im always hearing people who tried and couldn't get it working etc. The good thing is you must have learned bucket loads in the process. :-) I wouldn't regard myself as a noobie or other's like Steve Scrimpshire who had similar probs. Having reinstalled with the updated Cd's on my hardware I can see how nice the installer is when it works .... I did however go through an inordinate amount of messing about until I got the updates. Probably something in my hardware but all the same ... Yeah sounds extreme but that's the other windows convert type. He certainly sounds like he persevered as well. At one point I think it even popped intop my head for a brief second AND I DETEST windows. Yeah me to. The sad thing is the fact that once I got the Magazine version disks it worked first time. If Mandrake would only have put the updates in a extra CD you get at the cash desk :-) when you buy it or the sip into the mail order edition... So what Im saying is if you have 9.0 working and its critical don't upgrade to 9.1 unless you already have the updates. What mandrake SHOULD do is make the supplimental (update) Cd bootable with a fixed installer etc. so those of us the install doesn't like can actually get the installer to run! If they don't know how to do it/don't have time I'm sure the nice plf guys would do it for them !! In fact I'd be willing to bet once they do their full 9.1 install disk it will work flawlessly.
  22. Motts: Another idea, is it USB2.0 and is it the only USB2.0 device you have?? Ive still been too lazy to get usb 2 working. It freezes up completely on one system (built in usb2) and on the other I gave up (temporarily) and removed the USB2 card so it would install without crashing. I'm not sure there aren't some kernel problems because it worked fine in 9.0 although it wasn't extensively tested. I can say my SCSI scanner works fine in 9.1, not that that helps you. aRtee has his USB 2.0 working so worth checjking if you think that could be the problem.
  23. Yeah, I see plenty of use for keeping them. First off I have multiple machines and I want the same updates on each. Second there the reinsall cos I just FUBAR'd everything argument too. It was annoying me till I ftp'd the whole of texstar and downloaded the ISO from plf but I'd rather not have it delete them. Also occaisionally a server is down on my urpmi list which has a dependency for something so the whole thing falls over when maybe i just needed a 64 byte contrib. I'd set my sources to check the local rpm cache first then look on the internet to see if later versions exist. Another potentially useful use is if you screw your internet connection and you need the rpm for your modem !! tyme: I could ftp your updates if you like and I'll forward it to anyone in Europe if they send me a stamped addressed envelope and blank CD. (presuming they aren't just too lazy to use their own broadband)
  24. anna, its also possibly worth checking that the hotplug service is actually started and running. I guess if when you installed you didn't have any usbmass storage (or other usb devices) attached it wouldn't start the service by default. I'm on NT now but I guess you should have a /etc/init.d/hotplug ? You can run it with status as an option and check. If it isn't try starting it and then replugging the device??
  25. emilioestevezz, Sorry, as Michel points out you'd usually get a quicker response here. Ive been messing with my own firewall this weekend :-) and I wasn't sure what exactly the problem was. We will need a bit more info otherwise we are guessing. Firstly, the server is at work ? You mention Intranet, is it on that machine ?? I'm presuming you need intranet and internet. When you say slow, is it slow to access the intranet as well? If you connect directly to your server with its IP address is that slow? If you connect to http://localhost is that as slow? What I'm getting at is is the Mandrake machine slow all round or is it just a routing problem. Can you access the internet from the server, if so is that slow too. Are you running squid or another cache, perhaps its using too much memory ?? One thing you might have a problem with your DNS resolution ?? Perhaps its searching for a local server first. You running DHCP, where are the PC's getting their names from (/etc/resolv.conf)
