  1. I remember a bug in MDK10 that make not activate NICs, my advice is to update your system, specially drakconf and the kernel, since those fixed the problem for me. You could download the updates directory for mdf 10 OE from within windows from one of the mirrors and then update the system back in mdk. There is a way to generate an hdlist from a directory on the hard drive so you can add it as an update source, the command is genhdlist. Good luck.
  2. Try kuickshow, you move to previous/next picture with the mouse wheel, i was looking for something like that just like you till i found this one, simple but effective.
  3. I didnt use an rpm but the installer instead, and it copied the files by itself (it just asked me for the path to my browsers directories).
  4. Hi steve, I installed flash plugin version 7 last night and it seems that the installer actually copied the files over to the plugin dir instead of making a symbolic link Check this out: [~] ls -l /usr/lib/mozilla-firebird-0.7/plugins/ total 2076 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 856 may 28 23:19 flashplayer.xpt* -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2096844 may 28 23:19 libflashplayer.so* -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 20176 oct 15 2003 libnullplugin.so* Don't really know if it makes any difference but all i can tell is that flash 7 does seem to work fine. BTW im still using firebird 0.7 as you can see... it might be that you need to downgrade
  5. Hi there, The one i use is aMule and the latest stable version 1.2.6 is on PLF.
  6. IF?? Are you sure it doesnt ?? Have you check it or are you just guessing ?? I have a quite old machine and it does have this option. Double check for your own benefit since it might be the only way to sort out your problem, dont believe me? Check out this post: Can't boot on XP (fat32) after install mdk 10 :deal: :deal:
  7. This is a known bug that was in MDK 10 CE and made it into 10 OE... inexplicably All you gotta do is go into your BIOS and change the Hard Disk setting from AUTO to LBA. Try it and see if it works for you...
  8. I fully agree with Gowator, first you have to decide WHAT you want to backup. My method is just an example, and it only backups your /home, although you can use it to backup any other directories. In resume, with my example I'm not telling you that your /home is the only thing you need to backup but showing you a straightforward method to backup all files in a directory, and it gives you the advantage be able to mount the iso file anywhere afterwards. Gowator way is a good one too since it will store all your data in a single file preserving permisions. To do the same but compressing the data at the same time (using gzip) use: tar -zcpf my_home_backup.tar.gz /home/my_username Regards,
  9. Yeah, you need to have package mkisofs installed (mkisofs-2.01-0.a27.2mdk which is on MDK10 OE cd 1). To install it go to Mandrake Control Center, Software management, Install software, type mkisofs and it'll find it for you, then just tick it and click on install. Alternatively, to do the same via console, just type as root: urpmi mkisofs Nothing else needed AFAIK. :D
  10. ah ok, i think ill try it then when i get the time, btw do you know if its possible to include the latest updates (lets say as an aditional cd on the dvd)? I suppose you can include as many cds as you like, isnt it? would be nice to have everything on the dvd and i think there is space left... ----Added afterwards: ----- Hi Steve, we posted at the same time!. Ive done s/t similar to what you propose but the problem is that the resulting DVD wont be bootable, is there a way to make it bootable or is it just imposible to boot from a DVD ??? Thanks.
  11. Hi, - Start k3b (from the menu or issuing 'k3b' in a terminal) - Go to 'TOOLS' menu, then 'CD' and then 'BURN CD ISO IMAGE' - Select the 'image to burn' (i.e.= /home/user/Mandrake_10_Official_CD1.iso) - Click on 'START' NOTE= My system language is not english so the menu names may be different but similar to the ones i mention. Good luck.
  12. Hi there, It is really simple... If all you got to do is backup your user /home directory (whether this is a standalone partition or not doesnt really matter here) just do this: 1.- Create an iso image of that dir with: mkisofs -o file_with_backup_of_home.iso /home/your_username (where 'file_with_backup_of_home.iso' is the name of the iso file that'll be created and 'your_username' is ehh.. well, your username). 2.- To check if everything is on the file you can mount the iso image to a directory by issuing this command (as root): (First create a directory where to mount the iso file to, for example /mnt/temp, with this command: md -p /mnt/temp, and then...) mount -o loop -t iso9660 file_with_backup_of_home.iso /mnt/temp Now you can change to /mnt/temp (cd /mnt/temp) and check that everything is there, if it is then just burn the iso file to a CDRW (you can do that with k3b) and you are done. I wouldnt use Drackbackup myself, havent ever tried it. Hope this helps.
  13. Hi there! Im a club member and i can tell you that the extra-benefits you get are IMHO no worth the money. The only reason im still a member is to support MDK and a distro that i really like, you get to pay 60 $/€ a year is nothing, 5 $ or € a month !! (for a standard membership) You cant really expect much for that money so i just dont. Im happy to pay for nothing and whatever i get in return i consider it as an extra. If you join with high expectations on better support or customer care you will end up disanppointed. Some of the benefits: - For example you get to download the latest versions of mdk earlier than everyone else but only via bittorrent use (no ftp option). - You can vote for applications but they have no staff there to build the packages for the most voted apps. Instead the packages are build by 'volunteers', people just like you who decide to help. And the volunteers decide which app they want to make a package for, no matter how many votes its got. So an app with a thounsand votes may be requested and undone for ever. - You get full access to the forums in mandrakeclub.com but the forums system (ie. no search function) and the feel of them are really nasty, I hardly visit them and since there is mandrakeusers.org, who needs them anyway?. In fact the whole mandrakeclub.com page looks and feels horrible. Dont remember what others 'benefits' you get, but IMHO very few of them are worth a penny. I like to encourage people to join, but dont like fooling no one. For 5$ a month you can try it for a year and stop contributing if you dont like it.
  14. I would recommend you not to get that modem (I got a friend who still cannot connect with linux because of it), in fact i wouldnt recommend you any USB modems but a router instead as Leo said. Other than that i cant really comment on uks isps.
  15. You have probably fogotten to set up your DNS, ask your ISP for them.
  16. This was a known bug in MDK 10 CE but i though (and i hoped too) it was fixed in MDK 10 OE All you have to do is get into your bios and change the Hard Disk setting from "AUTO" to "LBA", this solution was reported to work by many users. If it does work for you please post it since thatll mean that is the same bug as before.
  17. I always turn it off, its a waste of space since its useless anyway ...
  18. Hi arthurking, The lilo bootloader will not look into your bios settings (Floppy, SCSIraid,IDE0) to boot up linux, instead when you install linux in, for example, IDE1 and tell the installer that lilo will reside in /dev/fd0 (the floppy drive), it'll install the bootloader and configure it with the right setting of where the linux installation is, in IDE1 in this example. In other words, lilo or whaever bootloader doesn't care about the BIOS setting of "Floppy, SCSIraid,IDE0". Now imagine you have installed linux in IDE1 and the bootloader in a floppy and you have set the boot sequence to Floppy, SCSIraid,IDE0, so: - The computer boots up, it looks for any bootloader in floppy, as there is one it'll execute lilo, so your BIOS wont look any further for a bootloader since it has already found one. Then lilo starts and you'll see a menu to choose an option from, probably you'll see: Linux Failsafe floppy So you choose 'Linux', and because lilo was set up to find linux on IDE1, itll look for it there. - If your BIOS doenst find a bootloader in Floppy itll continue looking for one in the remaining places, in this case that is SCSI and then IDE0. As itll find one in SCSI (your current window$ installation) itll just fire up window$ and wont look any further (will not look for it in IDE0) So don't get confused by your BIOS' boot up sequence setting and the Operating System Bootloader, since one starts the other but none is a replacement of the other. Hope this helped.
  19. It doesnt need to, the bootloader doesnt need to know, you will start windo$ by removing the floppy so the computer will look for the bootloader as usual (as it does now). I think you are wrong in thinking that Lilo will be the one to start window$, but that wont happen because lilo wont even be executed (since you will remove the floppy when booting up to windows). You can restore the mbr from the MDK CD1 too, since it can be used as a recue CD. The difference between that install of MDK and the one you'll do with the new IDE HD and the floppy is that the bootloader(lilo) will be on the floppy, so if you remove the floppy before the computer boots, itll read the bootloader you are using right now as i stated before. Hope i made myself clear, if not, post qs again.
  20. This info is based on my own experience: Thats right, you just tell MDK to install the bootloader in /dev/fd0 and it wont touch anything else, I have done this many times. Yeah. Yes. IMH opinion and experience, yes. No. You wont have to, just insert the floppy whenever you want linux and leave it out when you want window$. I recommend you anyway to wait for a second opinion to back up this. Good luck!
  21. Hope this helps, at least for the first part.
  22. I had the same prob and the updates for 10 fixed it. Now it woks fine upon reboot.
