  1. Hi sapphiron, I had a quick look and found this command netstat -pant I haven't found a GUI for this, but I'll post back if I do, if that's really what you were asking. cheers.
  2. alloneword said: I rekon it's coz the northern hemisphere-ians have isolated the magnetic 'Flux Unit Component Kernel Energy Diffuser' particles in gravity itself and have reversed the effects of gravity in the southern hemisphere, from a treatment plant in the Woomera region. Now everything is being sucked up there, while we languish down here with very little or nothing! this may seem a little 'sensationalist conspiracy theory' now!... but some day 'THEY' are going to make a TV series based on this theory!..........I hope :P or, Maybe this said router is just slow! When you say " when I try to copy the files back onto my computer " I'm assuming on your LAN...... to a windows box ??
  3. Hi again Dicko! I'm not a ftp server admin or anything, I just needed something to do! I had problems with Proftp. I've given up on it for now, but will come back to it soon. My problems were not with Kerberos authentication, *** have you created the anon/ftp user on your system? *** ie. you have your root user, then you have your 'dicko' user, and now you have to create a (super-duper access limited) anonymous or ftp user I called him anonymous, and place him in the 'ftp users' group. I forget the exact steps I did, but got him access...........of sorts. My problems were, when connected as anonymous and using any GUI ftp program, I couldn't see any of the files or directories I'd created. If I used the ftp on the Command Line I had no problems seeing stuff, I just hate the CLI :o One point to watch is the pro ftp config file you are using will only give your anonymous user access to the /var/ftp dir. (ps this took me 2 days to figure out ) Do you want to only access the server as anonymous? There are ready made config files on the ProFTP website. I also played with webmin for configuration and then Gproftp a ProFTP gui configurator, Mind you I only did this for something to do.........as we do good luck and cheers.
  4. Havin_it is correct in that you need samba installed for file access to and from windows, but I was under the impression that you're having troubles accessing the linux box from windows, and samba won't help here. You must have some access rule to prevent logging in to the mandrake computer, and with the firewall off, you got me stumped too. LinNeighborhood works well for file access if (and when) you get your Lin-Win network running. I'm a bit confused with your VNC problem. Can you access linux from windows using VNC? I got VNC working (as root ) from windows. I used RealVNC viewer from windows to control mdk10.1 with no problems. With samba installed you don't really need to mount any filesystems, just the directory you want to access. Windows will share all the directories you allow in you smb.conf file in linux. I strongly recommend you try SWAT for samba config first time around, only because the help file is better.
  5. Hi Urza, I've been trying to learn ProFTP too, for about 4 weeks now, with limited success. I kinda understand what you're trying to do, but have you turned your ftp 'user' into a mandrake 'user' ? I think this is the trick here. I configured proftp with 3 users, ftp-anon, arthur and root. each has their own distinct permissions from mandrake. ie arthur (thats me!) can see some files in certain dirs and have normal permissions in ftp as I do in mandrake. root has unfettered access and ftp-anon is limited (but this is the account I'm having troubles with). So (I'm not sure how to set permissions) make sure you create a 'user' and give him permissions to certain files/dirs, then create the same 'user' in proftp and I rekon you will come close to your objective, I didn't really think about it when I configured proftp with webmin, it just happened this way for me.
  6. Hi Dicko, how's the weather in Melbourne I think I kind'a remember that there were some 'issues' with samba 3.0.2(a), which is the default samba version in mdk10, that were resolved in later releases. Try updating to the current version, if you haven't already. Or otherwise post your smb.conf :D No....no...no...I mean, REALLY, give us a real look at it cheers.
  7. You haven't enabled the service yet. For SWAT to work you need to go into MCC and then SERVICES. There should be a listing for SWAT, and it will start the service when needed.
  8. I got to go to work now, but don't uninstall samba, just rename the smb.conf file to something else (old_smb.conf) then make sure you got SWAT installed and use this to reconfigure samba. maybe the easiest option now, and one that I've done a few times myself. But I never had this problem with nmbd!
  9. I have a netgear router and have had no problems with DNS, using mdk10.1. my entries are: search <ISP Name> nameserver <isp dns server1> nameserver <isp dns server2> #ppp temp entry Could this be a D-Link issue (DHCP?), not a Mandrake problem ? I think its 'unrelated' I live in AUS too and this page loaded in about .001 seconds. avg ping time 100ms. Its probably a DNS problem as arctic described. sorry I can't be more helpful. ( maybe I can be more helpful. Buy a netgear router )
  10. If you don't use DHCP how did you lose your 192.168.100.1 IP? I'd go over to that guy who stole it off you and boof him on the nose for causing you all this problem Seriously, I don't think DHCP is an issue here. Like I said samba automatically chose a machine on my network to master browser. What process was involved here I would have assumed the box running smbd/nmbd, but it chose a WinXP box (?) As long as you set your IP's, (how did you?) on all the machines manually, and give all the machines and lmhosts file, I think it may work. How to unset 192.168.100.1 as the nmbd server, manually, I couldn't tell. But try to reconfigure samba with SWAT. lots of info in the help files. good luck.
  11. I was reading the info from SWAT, :o edit: In my above post I mentioned that one of my winXP computers was set as the master browser by samba. That machine didn't have a lmhost file, I recently installed SP2 (?), and so I copied one from the other machine, placed in the appropriate dir, and presto LinNeighborhood is faster and the computer is no longer "commented" as 'master without browse list'.
  12. Hi Alex this problem is driving me nuts! I can imagine how you're feeling U used KDE networks or something I'm not familiar with for the SMB.config ? Have you tried to reconfig smb.conf with SWAT or WEBMIN ? I remember that there is an option to set the 'master browser'. Did you set this to 192.168.100.1 IP manually? Maybe set this to AUTO and let samba do its 'thing'. I say 'thing' because, I assumed that when I set up samba with webmin or swat and set this to Auto, that this would default to my mandrake10.1 machine, where smbd and nmbd are running, BUT..........when I browse my network (2 WinXP-pro and 1 Mdk10.1) I see that one of my windows machines is set as "master without browse list" I assume that this is where the list of machines/IP resolution is/should be, but I never set this up! It just worked that way, and with no problems. Have you set up your network's lmhosts files? In winXP its under x:\windows\system32\drivers\etc There will be a .sam (sample file) in there. The basics are all you may need. I have 3 lines in my lmhosts. IP address (one space) computername 123.456.789 XP3200 This resolves the computers to an IP. Done on all computers. (copy and pasted :D ) /etc/samba/lmhosts for Linux. ps: I don't think there is a separate nmb config file, it works off smb.conf (not 100% sure)
  13. Hi Alex. I was just looking into my /proc and reading your dilemma here. I have nmbd with a PID 3871. So I'm looking into /proc and I open /3871, there is a link to the exe, in here. Maybe your nmbd got corrupted somehow ??? Maybe you could kill it there. I kinda remember you were using Gnome (?) I use KDE and found the PID, using KDE system guard. I don't know what monitoring software Gnome uses. I suppose you could delete the PID directory for nmdb, if you find it, and try restarting it. Do a; #ps -A and hope that nmbd is listed. Or, try; # killall nmbd or #killall -HUP nmbd I'm not proficient at this, but I like a good read :D cheers.
  14. Hi papaschtroumpf. I have a Gigabyte mainboard, so I don't have any tips for your Shuttle, but........... On my board If I view the BIOS in the default menu, I don't see too many options and no advanced options. But If I press CTRL-F1 in the BIOS main page, this then sets the BIOS menu in an advanced stage with all sorts of normally hidden menus. On of the options is "Thermal Throttling" and as it sounds, this slows the CPU speed according to temp. This may be better than shutting down sometimes. I'm not saying Shuttle have this system, but I would never have found this without the help from amdmb forums (.....trying to setup a link.....) AMDMB Forums? Go to the Shuttle forum and find out more about your board, or even find a modded BIOS to enable advanced menus. etc, etc........ have fun.
  15. .bash_history! Of course, in my home dir. But I have to enable view hidden files first. Saved. cheers.
