  1. I was planning to do that (mirror the FTP site, at least just the A64 tree and burn it into a DVD). However, it seems that the x86_64 tree for 2005 is not up yet on official. It is still in devel tree and looking at the dates, it was updated 2 days ago. Is the x86_64 version still in development or the one in the devel is actually official?
  2. Y'know.. that could be a motherboard bios issue.
  3. That sounds like a menu in a drive-through fast food joint :)
  4. Could you explain in details your hard drive / partition setup? Also post your /etc/fstab file. Maybe your /home partition is just not loaded somehow.
  5. Gigabyte has usually have multiple versions of their motherboards. The "workhouse" versions are usually pretty standard, typical of regular motherboards of that type (built in LAN, USB, SATA, sound, etc). The "overclocker" versions, now, those have all those fancy smancy gadgets like dual bios, dual rail, dual Gigabit Lan, dual SATA RAID, Dual Video (aka SLI), etc, etc, etc. How do I know? Well, my current A64 motherboard is a gigabyte K8NS ("workhouse version"). The difference between that and K8NS-Pro Sigma Edition (the "uber" version) is close to US$ 100. At the time I bought my motherboard, only 4 manufacturers have NF3-250 mobo in Indonesia. Asus, (at least in Indonesia) is way overpriced and overhyped for its quality. I am afraid of using ECS for a top of the line computer like A64. DFI's LAN Party mobo has legendary overclocking and stability, but it is also expensive. So I have to go to Gigabyte. So far I haven't regret my choice yet.
  6. That link goes to suse 9.3 in German. I thought you hate Suse and I didn't know you understand German :) Anyway, what do you want to link to? PS: Does Xbox run KDE and OpenOffice.org well? (Well as in comparable to a PentiumIII-500 with 192 MB of RAM). Since it's cheaper than even a used PC over here.. I could just buy a modded XBOX (easy to find in Indonesia), install Linux on it, hook it up to a TV and then tell the user to use this for their computer :)
  7. So the x86_64 version is out at the same time? Cool Time to pester my friend who has the silver club membership to send a copy to me :)
  8. Now. all we need to do is to put that mp3 during soundcheck (draksound) and we'll be set :P
  9. Gowator, let me get this.. Mandrakesoft actually made an XBOX version of Mandrake Linux? I thought the XBOX linux is actually a hacked version of something else. If Mandrake actually does make an official version with XBOX support, don't you think Microsoft would cry bloody murder? Adam, I think you are teasing us with that "tomorrow" remark. That way, if it is released months late.. you only have to say, "Well I did say tomorrow, I never said any specific date."
  10. I have a toshiba laptop also, and I don't have any shutdown problems. I do have acpi and apcid activated, then add module "toshiba-acpi" in my /etc/modprobe.conf. If I don't have those three things activated, I will have the same issues during shutdown. Try it, maybe it works.
  11. I think the problem with suse not playing mp3 unless you ripped out half of KDE is increased in suse 9.3. Madpenguin's review said so. Maybe the older version doesn't have this problem, or at least not this bad.
  12. Well.. I think the docs for a particular version should be out the same day the downloadable isos are available in the mirrors. A few weeks late is better than a few months late :)
  13. I will be upgrading both my laptop and my desktop. Regular x86 for laptop and x86_64 goodness for my desktop :)

You know.. when I was still distro-hopping (back in 1998 or so), it seems that every Linux distro I tried was weird sounding. I mean Slackware, does that mean it makes you a slacker? Red Hat, what does that have to do with an Operating System? Mandrake, hmm.. is it poisonous? Suse.. Say what? And so on and so on. But then I stop nitpicking and just stay with Mandrake :)
  15. It's grip for me. It's more configurable.
  16. I think the management of Mandrakesoft knows what they are doing. A company doesn't just merge with another just after they went into black bookkeeping wise. I think they realize that making a stable distro will be more important than going cutting edge. A stable distro that doesn't cost an arm and a leg will be more useful to a small to middle sized businesses (where I think the new Mandrivasoft is aiming right now).
  17. I dunno.. it looks good in technical way, but somehow it comes out as... AOL-ish, to me.
  18. Well.. it's official, so there is nothing we can do about that. ConnecDrake is good.. but just way too generic. Besides, it sounds more "tacked-on" than Mandriva. And if you count the "discussion" at slashdot seriously, you must be more mind-damaged than well.. the people who are making up the name "mandriva" :)
  19. Both of the monitors are LGs, right? Same model of LGs too? Now, with all the pricing cuts all electronic stuffs are receiving nowadays, it is possible that LG is using low quality components for that particular model. So the same component is busted (in this case, the red gun or components controlling that red gun). I still remember buying a used 17 inch monitor for 400 dollars. Nowadays, they cost less than 150 dollars brand new. Some costs less than 100 dollars even.
  20. MDK = Murder Death Kill isn't it? The Star Logo should stay, but the name should be different. Hmm.. since Connectiva is Brazil while Mandrake is French.. are there any good sounding (and meaning) words in both languages that are the same?
  21. Count me in the Anything but Mandriva category. I don't even know how to pronounce it. Man driver?
  22. Ok. the Chinese Coca Cola naming confusion.. I first read the article in Indonesian, so maybe the translation is not really exact. And this story can be considered an Urban Legend (although it actually have basis in fact, just that Coca Cola would never admit it). Back when Coca cola is trying to market to China, they found an interesting problem, Chinese are really really fanatic about using their characters for all things. (and I can testify about this too, even though I don't understand Chinese that much, but since I am Chinese descent, my parents, aunts, uncles, grandmothers, etc, do speak Chinese). So, they try to 4 Chinese Characters that have similar sounds to "Ko Ka Ko La". The closest sounding translation is nonsensical, but have a meaning of something like "Bite the wax tadpole." Now nobody would like that as a brand name, so after extensive research, Coca Cola chooses 4 Chinese Characters that sounds like "K'o K'ou K'o Le" which means, "to allow the mouth to be able to rejoice". Coca cola registered that trademark in 1928, and then everybody lives happily ever after. :) Source: http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/tadpole.asp
  23. Maybe it is the case that the USB flash drive is formatted simply as /dev/sda thing again. You either need to reformat the flash drive or mount it manually.
  24. It's bad enough that Mandrake infringe Mandrake the magician, now you want the company to infringe Asterix the Gaul, too? (Although since the comic is French, I guess the chance of it working is greater)
