  1. Psssstt... Don't tell DOlson about this... Anyway.. congrats.. but you should still buy native games whenever possible. While utilities like this is a stopgap measure, it also can act like the reason of the gaming companies not to create linux ports or linux native games.
  2. January.. it's going to be in January (I hope, I hope I hope).
  3. How long does it take for a >100 MB source rpm to compile in say.. a 1 ghz athlon? If it takes only a few hours, I think it's going to be worth it.. I don't want to search for a dos emulator just to play classic games (besides, win2k just sux for playing old dos games).
  4. Now.. what are some good Star Trek games out there? Really, I am curious..
  5. Ok.. forgive me for not being unenthusiastic.. but isn't Rise of the Triad a really old game? I mean don't get me wrong.. I like some oldies (early Ultimas and Wasteland is still the best games I played), but isn't ROTT is like the same generation as Doom?
  6. It's never fast or good enough for us.. Heck.. you know what I want.. I want a cheat machine (usually a program that searches a particular number or state in the ram area of where the program is runned, then change the ram state for a number and make it stuck.. think a game genie for linux). Yeah.. I like to cheat during playing games.. but so what? It's my game.. I want to play the way I want it.. and there is nothing more satisfying than plowing through AI monsters with overwhelming power... muahahahahahahahaha Ahem.. anyway.. anyone know a program like that for linux?
  7. If it's installed the same way as RPM (no reason to be different) Here is a listing. [dmage@spitfire dmage]$ rpm -ql NVIDIA_kernel /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/video/NVdriver [dmage@spitfire dmage]$ rpm -ql NVIDIA_GLX /usr/X11R6/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA.a /usr/X11R6/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA.so.1.0.3123 /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so.1.0.3123 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.3123 /usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1.0.3123 /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0 /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/NVIDIA_Changelog /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README.DE /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/XF86Config.sample /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/include /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/include/GL /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/include/GL/gl.h /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/include/GL/glx.h /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/include/GL/glxtokens.h /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/license.txt Hope it helps.
  8. I kinda doubt anyone can port the Baldur's Gate series considering the legal wrangling between Bioware and Interplay about the infinity engine games. While interplay has the right to the name Baldur's Gate, I am not sure who can be allowed to port infinity engine to linux. Furthermore, while Baldur's Gate series is very popular (heck I have all the BG games including the add-ons), it's also old. Not sure how popular it is nowadays.. However, I would like to see the engine itself be ported so we can have those fan-made hacks and modules to be available in linux.
  9. Well.. with the problems they have with NWN.. it will either cause in two things.. 1. They learn much about linux game programming and porting and they are more confident in porting their future games, or 2. They learn how much trouble they have in porting NWN and don't even bother in thinking of other version of their future games other than Window$. Here's hoping for number 1.
  10. openoffice all the way. I actually used a final version of staroffice once (thanks to my friend who works at sun), but it's so similar to openoffice that I didn't even bother switching it in my own computer.
  11. Cooker usually have debugging codes in it. So it will balloon up the size of the rpms. After all, Mandrake is much more involved in KDE development than RedHat. Now, let's compare the debugging code stripped KDE 3.1 RC5 found in texstar's place at http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut...drake/9.0/test/ kdeartwork-3.1-0.rc5.1tex.i586.rpm 10-Dec-2002 21:33 12.3M kdemultimedia-3.1-0.rc5.1tex.i586.rpm 11-Dec-2002 16:46 7.0M kdegraphics-3.1-0.rc5.1tex.i586.rpm 10-Dec-2002 21:08 4.9M See how the size are similar there.. and even smaller in case of kdegraphics. Anyway, go to the link above to check out texstar's kde 3.1 RC5 rpms.. I am using it right now and it's pretty stable.. but don't say I didn't warn you :)
  12. Looking at www.dyndns.org 's own client listings, it seems that ddclient could be the one that you are looking for. I cannot give you more information than that since my D-Link 604 router can act as a client to DDNS sites with updated firmware. Hope it helps.
  13. Supermount problem.. Disable supermount by using supermount -i disable Then mount the cd manually.
  14. Hmm.. not sure since I never installed the tarball version.. check the readme, maybe you can just overinstall it with the older driver.
  15. Yeah, KDE 3.1 RC5 (texstar's version) have a few quirks that annoys me, like konqueror file manager in list view always use single click mouse style no matter what kind of mouse setting I put (the icon view is ok). The default option is always to save the session when logging out unless I change it then have to find out where to save my session so I can log in always with gkrellm in all desktops and no panel shown. Well.. at least the kde developers have a few more weeks to iron out the bugs so the 3.1 final is as good as it can be.
  16. Yupper, the older one seems more stable for me. Since I don't play games that much, I prefer the stability of the old driver.
  17. I am having some problems with the newest nvidia driver also. Version 4.191 seems to make my GL screensavers very blocky instead of smooth.. Try downgrading to version 3.123 and see if it solve your problem.
  18. http://news.com.com/2100-1001-978040.html The article make it seems like mandrakesoft is going against the open source philosophy by charging people to get support for MNF.. What they don't get is just about every other linux companies does that.. And it's a hell lot better than some linux companies does (such as xandros, or lindows, even SuSE). Case in point, the cd for MNF is gpl, and you can download it free, but if you need support, then you can pay for support by agreeing to a more restrictive license. So what's the problem with this? That's right, nothing.. Sigh.. just one more proof that zdnet is owned by microsoft and don't really understand what free means.
  19. it's not linux.. it's kde.. KDE 3 is very resource intensive especially for a relatively low end computer such as P2-300. Try a lighter desktop, I suggest IceWM or XFCE.
  20. Have you tried going to sis homepage and download their own version of the driver. The one I saw in there is dated 11/14/2002 which is much newer than the version mandrake or XFree 4.2.1 put in mandrake distro. Who knows, maybe it is 3d accelerated, too. http://download.sis.com/sisdlc/driver_select.jsp
  21. It may not be kde's fault that it hangs your xmms playing. Anyway, the ctrl-alt-backspace may kill the desktop part of kde, but there are still something running that may not be connected to X such as arts and others. Besides, which version of KDE are you using? I am using KDE 3.1 RC5 right now and other than a bit of reorientation (they change a bit of where they put the options and how to do stuffs) it's quite stable. I heard that KDE 3.0.4 for mandrake rpms are stable as a rock, it may have the bugfix that you are looking for.
  22. Hehehe funny story.. I guess the part of about redhat being the front runner for Santa's Linux move is because of the part of the ensembles Santa wears to work every year :)

Ok.. I am confused of what type of game this is. It is said in the info that it is a turn based RPS game. So what kind of game is it? Real Time Strategy? Turn Based Strategy? It looks similar to warcraft (which I don't like since I just don't have the reflexes anymore to play Real Time Strategy). It looks mighty interesting though.
  24. Sound is only available in the SDK rpm I believe. It even stated so in the homepage.
  25. Texstar's bibletime and sword package works fine for me. Although I rarely use them anymore ever since gnomesword 0.7.6 compiles and runs fine in mandrake 9.0.
