  1. backup /home and than change the repositories from 2007.1 to 2008.0, use rpmdrake or the update manager to update and then install and run etc-update (from the terminal) to update config files if desired. I if the install gets borked do a fresh install and restore your backed up /home
  2. Works pretty well for me and is quite fast booting and starting up apps (seems to be faster than gutsy), just a few little things: my multimedia keys don't work, with none of the supplied keymaps for my brand of keyboard unless I change the keyboard layout to "evdev" and remove the Option rel bits "+0+1+2" from xorg.conf (or something similar, I am not at home at the moment) and my old parport scanner stopped being recognised (inspite that it still works in ubuntu). Oh and those drop shadows mentioned before are sort of annoying because they clash with compiz effects... All in all a very good release edit: i meant evdev not xev
  3. opera stable(<9.5)+flash(9r48)=sucks :( get the latest opera weekly and try the flash beta, still not optimal but better than stable http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/ http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/
  4. Why dont you install xfce or kde to see if it is a gnome problem or a general problem?
  5. just installed task-gnome-minimal it is slow as hell for me too  xfce and kde3 are running just fine though.... (xfce seems to be running quite a bit faster for me, well a lot faster than xubuntu anyway...), kde is as fast as kubuntu....
  6. I don't know about GNOME but in KDE and XFCE you have to turn on subpixel hinting in their control centers then fonts look good on my system if I use the plf package....
  7. Still the problems with the keyboard persist, I have no idea for which package to file a bug even...
  8. I tried that already, I tried many different lay-outs and I also tied deleting xorg.conf. On a releted note lspcidrake, mousedrake and harddrake seg/fault since wednesday, don´t know if this has been fixed, I won´t be home till thuesday to check (and maybe fill out a bug/report)
  9. Yeah, and in Ubuntu 107 is also given (this is just one example but many keys are messed) but I am hoping an update will magically fix it, don't have time right now to go bug-hunting
  10. edit this is an example from xev both are from presing delete both keyboards are plugged in: KeyPress event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x1400001, root 0x1a5, subw 0x0, time 1764946434, (101,91), root:(104,135), state 0x10, keycode 119 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False KeyRelease event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x1400001, root 0x1a5, subw 0x0, time 1764946530, (101,91), root:(104,135), state 0x10, keycode 119 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False KeyPress event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x1400001, root 0x1a5, subw 0x0, time 1764953527, (101,91), root:(104,135), state 0x10, keycode 107 (keysym 0xffff, Delete), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (7f) "" XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (7f) "" XFilterEvent returns: False KeyRelease event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x1400001, root 0x1a5, subw 0x0, time 1764953668, (101,91), root:(104,135), state 0x10, keycode 107 (keysym 0xffff, Delete), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (7f) "" XFilterEvent returns: False
  11. nope i checked that, but why would only the usb be affected and not the ps/2
  12. The keyboard works partially but keys but only the part on the left side (ie the regular keys) not the cursor keys, the numeric keypad nor the block with del and insert etc. maybe this can point someone in the direction... edit: the keyboard works under console just not under X
  13. nVidia and USB magically fixed themselves but my usb keyboard (i just popped an old ps/2 keyboard and it works fine) is still borked and also some, like flash and vuze(=azureus 3.0) but not all, gtk-apps, there is even a mention in the kdebase changelog that a workaround has been made to get flash to work with the new gtk but other apps are also affected by the new gtk, flash now works with konqueror and firefox but not opera
  14. People have reported after buying a new computer, with completely different hardware, and putting in their old harddisk into the new computer that Mandriva would successfully boot but your milage may vary....
  15. startx but probably something went wrong, you should boot automatically into a gui, if startx doesn't work post the errors (lines starting with (EE)) you get here
  16. KDE is perfect for this, it has what is called file size view (selectable from the view menu) which graphically shows the size of each and every file and subdir of a directory.....
  17. It is only my user, there should be an ad there in the grey area:
  18. Somewhere a mysterious ad-blocker seems to be running, it replaces ads on for example this page the ads with ugly grey banners in Konqueror and Opera (but a transparent one in Firefox); I have disabled the adblockers in Opera and Konqueror but still the ugly grey banners persist....but only for my user and under both xfce and kde
  19. you could try (re)-installing and running ntfs-config
  20. Although I run the -ck patchset and it might make a small difference and it' s pretty cool how Con tried to make the desktop snapper, it is at best a very small difference, there has been a recent innovation which was far more important than the- ck-patchset or the new kernel-scheduler for desktop snappiness: compiz, now maybe if the same compiz does with window-managent can be done for sound......
  21. Shortly after sprong was released I couldnt resist cooker and upgraded my spring to cooker and it had been a pretty smooth ride up untill a few weeks ago and at this stage many things are badly broken for me: my keyboard (many keys like the cursor dont function), nvidia proprietary driver, my scanner doesnt work anymore, my usb drive doenst work anymore, gtk kills flash and some other gtk apps and kde4 is still pretty useless, all these except kde4 were working up untill not very long ago. I do hope they will wait with final untill all the bugs are sorted out....
  22. I can access my ISP tiscali.nl but their website is either terribly buggy or purpously exclusive, to correctly view them with opera I have to mask as FF else I will get a 404 error..... :o
  23. yeah have it reformat and reinstall but be sure to back up important stuff first ;)
  24. The free and boxed versions are the same except that the boxed version comes with extra (proprietary) software, installing it probably won't solve your problems but I would backup my /home and do a clean reinstall anyway matbe the magazine version's disk was corrupt.....
