  1. Also from the website. Notice the second result Hmmm, can we turn this around (MS-style) and say Microsoft is making Linux-only products now?
  2. Yup, the battle's on. Hang on to your seatbelts etc. etc. I imagine they must really be thinking something along these lines. "Poor boy! You had to study so long for your UNIX/informatics degree. Please come and work on or with our non-operating system! You can make more cash and find a real job. We cannot do it ourselves, but thanks to you, our latest vaporware will be more scalable, stable and secure." It worries me though. They finally apprehended the real threat of Linux: lots of brains working together. As Caesar said, said 'divide et impera' again (divide and conquer). Edit: I explored a bit and found the page in the screenshot. 'Interoperability - Now we're talking' WTF!!? Somehow I cannot seriously imagine it will also 'interoperate' nicely with Linux... I mean, I wish this was a sincere effort to interoperate with other platforms. But it probably is not. Sigh.
  3. Are we welcome, I mean, are there any special requirements to join?
  4. Working for free to *evaluate* them??? I mean this is absurd, especially seeing the Iraqi people must have operating costs as well. Which basically means they will be working at a loss! Why do they not do a 'small' test-project and pay part of the money (a percentage) in advance, and then dough up the rest after the work is completed (project should not be *too* big). Imho, that is much more acceptable then working for free, plus the risk for both parties involved is much lower. Or a different approach, but certainly not taking the risk of getting exploited.
  5. Follow-up: My brother got the laptop in for repair. They said the RAM (64MB) was toast... so they're going to replace it. I suggested getting more, but it's an old 'model', apparently you can't put in more. Seems the HD is fine ater all... However, I did learn something trying to rescue the data. Next time something like this happens, I think I will be more prepared.
  6. Summary: "Microsoft has begun the new year with a Linux knocking publicity campaign under the slogan "Get the Facts." A series of advertisements is due to run for six months in major IT publications, and will direct readers to the company's landing page for the campaign." (The Reg.) Article from The Register: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/34734.html Actual ms website: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/facts/default.asp Doesn't this mean more 'free' (as in beer) publicity for Linux? I'm kind of hoping they'll get even more paranoid and publish something like this in mainstream media... that'll be the day!
  7. All I can say is that I installed OpenOffice (I think even as a regular user?) and in my home directory there is indeed a (hidden) folder called .openoffice In this folder the executable ( soffice ) is there [or is it just a symlink?] Anyway, the full path I have to type to get it working (well, I got an icon now) is: /home/username/.openoffice/soffice I added this to my path in my .bashrc profile now though. No more needless typing, just 'soffice' and ready to rumble! ;)
  8. No, me neither. I don't think you can say the guy is really 'open-minded'... I wouldn't be quick to trust him. Not quick at all. Unfortunate thing is, those Iraqi people are not really in a good position to make demands... I wonder how corporations work with people in India though. Might be similar, and therefore, interesting, even if just to compare. (joke:) Maybe M$ needs some more people to work on Longhorn :P
  9. Now that we're talking desktops, I like both KDE and XFCE4. But one thing I noticed is that, when I somehow trashed some of my settings for X (you know, when you try to log in through xdm, it fails and you get dropped to a text console). I could not start any windowmakers, not KDE, not Gnome, not WindowMaker and not blackbox... but I *could* always start XFCE, without problems!? Does it not rely on X, or in another way somehow? In any case, in these situations, XFCE pretty much saved my butt. XFCE, Gnome-Commander, an Xterm and the 'launch program' command was really all I needed to keep going... So is this due to some fundamental difference in design or setup or what?? It's somewhat mysterious to me now...

  11. I'm glad B) have to do an updated, improved & extended version sometime though... anyway I'm glad something I created is useful for a change (most things aren't :P )
  12. Just drag it from the menu to the desktop then let go. It will probably ask you what you want to do with it (copy here, link here, ...). Choose 'link here'. Alternatively, you can right-click on the desktop background, then pick 'create new -> shortcut to application'. In the tab where you have to fill in the application/command, type "/usr/bin/mozilla" (without the quotes). Then press the icon on the left of the dialog box and choose a (mozilla) icon. As Liquidzoo mentioned, don't forget to pick a name for it. Might as well be 'browser' as 'Mozilla', don't matter as long as the command you're using is right. Don't know if you're new to Linux, but if you are, you could look around for some tutorials. I actually wrote one myself, so I'm going to do some shameless advertising for it here: http://liquidzoo.no-ip.com/mandrake/index.html Darkelve P.S. Liquidzoo, tx again for the hosting. Any idea yet if it gets some views?
  13. mmkay, think I'll try this first: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=5494 it was there all the time :woops: now I'm a little embarassed... What do I best put the drivers on? Windows partition? Floppy disk?
  14. erm... OpenOffice Writer? What exactly are you trying to do? Just printing out an address field on an evelope? You could check out Scribus. It's a DTP program, which should give you excellent control over positioning, etc... Although OpenOffice should do just fine (I even think there's a wizard for making envelope fields. Or was that business cards?)
  15. Hi board B) I used Knoppix to test how the HW from my dad's laptop would hold up. He said he'd be interested in trying out Linux on this machine. Of course, a demonstration would not be complete without a tour of the networking capabilities of Linux. Now it connects to a wireless access point, via its PCMCIA card (Intel Pro/Wireless 2011b). Luckily (beta)-drivers for this card have recently appeared. See: http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourri...tml#Spectrum24t Now my question is: (how) can I load these and activate the card when Knoppix is loaded? Some additional info: when Knoppix tries to load the card, it gives a beep, says it used the 'Orinoco' module and then it tells it failed. I believe to have read somewhere the beep is a good sign. I'm guessing instead of this module the beta driver has to be loaded, but how? Tx, Darkelve
  16. From 'basic' to 'intermediate' to 'advanced': 1. Getting Started with Linux http://www.linux.org/lessons/beginner/ 2. Linux newbie administrator guide http://linux-newbie.sunsite.dk/ 3. Linux: a hands-on guide http://www.tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/index.html the IBM link looks promising as well...
  17. I read Konqueror has a plug-in allowing for the easy creation of a Html image gallery. Don't think there's movement involved though, if that is what you mean with 'dynamic'.
  18. I'm not demonising. I'm just paranoid. And with M$ I actually have a reason to be paranoid, because they have the size and power to do certain 'things'. That being said, if it's better/faster and I can still run my Linux on it, I certainly won't complain...
  19. sometimes it just seems like M$ is taking a part in every existing/emerging standard, just to make sure they can use one for their lock-in purposes. I mean: proprietary document formats, DRM, XML, encrypted e-mail(I found out the e-mail that can 'auto-destroy' itself in Outlook will actually be encrypted to do so), bios, ... it would be a mistake to think M$ will ever do anything for the 'greater good' of the people... they're still the predator they've always been. Sad fact, but true. And everyone knows how Intel and M$ went to bed with eachother.
  20. I'm reading this one (in PDF): http://www.tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/index.html I suppose if you print it out and fold it into a booklet, you would have a book... but it's nice to have in front of you while you are fiddling. The exercises are way cool. I was really frustrated tryin for half an hour to get a "grep"-exercise just right... but I learned something! This was just the thing I wanted to try and get my skills to the next level. It rocks!
  21. Hey, Inferion, you speak Dutch? Where're you from? Me from Belgium. Anyway, welcome to the board!
  22. aRTee, thanks for the Linux. This week I will both report my working usb cam and send a mail to the company from the USB memory stick. As for HW compatibility lists, Mandrakes is quite good just not updated enough I think. SuSe is also good, less entries but it seems more recent. But, where's Debian??? Couldn't find a list. Maybe they just presuppose that all HW will work with it ;) Red Hat's list is a waste. Could not find most of my hardware, even though it should be in there. Was in both other lists. My ranking: 1. SuSe's list 2. Mandrakes list 3. Red Hat's list Also, how goes your quest to help Linux get pre-loaded? Good luck on that! O, and here's another poll: http://www.tryoutlinux.com/ ... and of course, this poll doesn't lie. Or does it? (actually this I don't like. Bad Lindows!) Oh boy, did I drift *way* off-topic here...
  23. Found this site, read it and couldn't stop laughing: http://www.mslinux.org/ Looks like yet another vaporware product to me. Just use Mandy, it's already there! (of course, that might just be the big joke here)
