  1. Window Maker? Yeah, that's bound to give you better speed than KDE. Of all the WM's I tried though, XFCE4 was fastest. The main thing I love about WindowMaker and XFCE4, is the way they dock applications. Anyone know if this is possible in KDE?? Oh, and some advice: I noticed I only got Konsole installed, but when I had KDE problems obviously I booted into XFCE4 but could not use console, so had no CLI. So be sure you have at least 2 terminals (I recommend Xterm) installed. Could save you a lot of trouble.
  2. Ok SoulSe, I will PM you! Let's getta thing on tha road
  3. Good idea Soulse! Although I do not think I will provide the ISO's myself, only link to the download pages. I'm a full-time webmaster myself. No developer, but I should be able to handle a small and 'simple' site. But if I do it, will I be developing nightmares of my site being slashdotted? :P The hell, I I'm gonna do it! Darkelve
  4. I downloaded and tried it. It does not have all the apps you have come to use from distro's like Knoppix or LinuxOS, but it is very polished, consistent and has one 'specialized' app for every need. It felt very responsive on my home system. I expect it to be especially valuable as a sort of portable Media Player, Internet Connection kit and solution in case things go wrong with 'other' Operating Systems. The only drawback is you HAVE to go with KDE so I expect performance will be more problematic on older or less performing systems. This is actually *the* CD to demo to your friends or other people. I am thinking myself of 'loosing' a CD on/around the train occasionally. Or I think I have a better idea: I put a leaflet suggesting they try it, explaining what it is/does and what the Open Source movement stands for. I would write this from scratch, but if it does exist, that would be very convenient. Anybody know of such a thing? Darkelve
  5. Well, a few suggestions of my part: - if you *can* upgrade the RAM, do it, but often you cannot since they do not make that breed of RAM anymore. I think you also have to have expansion slots for that - Go with another breed of Linux. Slackware or VectorLinux come to mind, but you can find lots of other distro's at www.distrowatch.com This one seems to be popular lately: http://www.distrowatch.com/table.php?distr...ution=damnsmall - Look what other people did; search in google or go here: http://www.linux-laptop.net/compaq.html - Use programs that do not take a lot of system resources, e.g. use AbiWord rather than OpenOffice or e.g. Rox rather than Konqueror - Ask for help on this board - Oops, DONE! :D
  6. Steven, After a long while searching, I think I found the problem: - I put off hardware accelleration for audio - I changed the sound output device (don't recall exact name) to the nvidia nforce one; it was configured as something else (something standard) at first! Been playing Morrowind for about 2 hours yesterday. This game seems great! Imho I like it much better than neverwinter, where -in the end- it probably comes to fighting and there is not that much room for Role Playing, or just relaxing if you want too! The graphics are not so recent, but a beauty to behold nevertheless. And the fighting system is kind of symplistic, which does not really bother me, because I can't fight :) I thought it was a hardware problem and therefore put it in hardware. Don't really care where it's placed though, especially as its solved now. Darkelve
  7. For those who did not know of this site yet, you can closely follow up the legal issues at http://www.groklaw.net/ They said this might not be such a good move, because SCO could sue some small companies and make them directly rely on these funds, which would ironically transfer the funds from the Legal Defense funds to SCO. Dunno if I explained right, but you can read the discussion at Groklaw. Darkelve
  8. Hi, I'm trying to play Morrowind in Windows XP. Everything starts up fine, but after a few minutes, the screen blacks out and 'hangs'. The REALLY crazy thing is, the next time I play it I can play longer before I hang/reboot... So I do get further in the game but as you see it is not really convenient. It does not seem to matter if I play in a window or full-screen. I searched some posts about this, there are some excellent forums on it. A couple of things I have tried: - Updates to the latest Nvidia drivers. * well, it doesn't stall anymore now. Instead, it reboots! - Play with No shadows, 16 bit color, 'high performance' for image settings (in the Nvidia configuration utility, instead of 'high quality images') Edit: I just found out it is not possible to play in 16 bit. Don't want to confuse anyone The forums also mention the problem could be with the power supply (which I had changed about a month ago). Still, why would it let me play longer every time!? Any suggestions? Also, I'm curious: is it possible to run this game under Wine? Would be interesting to see if the thing hangs/reboots in that case. Darkelve P.S. Sorry 'bout posting a Windoze XP issue here :(
  9. You really shouldn't have :shy: Don't thank me, thank Zeldmann instead! The honor is too much... No, really, I appreciate it on another note, you're trying out KDE 3.2 beta (alpha?), right? Well, I had a look at some screenshots on the internet, but it seems to me there are SO many components/applications in this release that I wonder how they can all get it finished and still be of high quality. If so, they must have an ARMY of professional programmers... Seeing all those 'features' makes me afraid the features will be plenty, but the quality might suffer. Or am I wrong?
  10. It's normal your code doesn't validate. In fact, it's not easy at all to get it to validate. There is an excellent article about this available at: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/flashsatay/ Darkelve
  11. Anyone else thinks the guy looks like he has greasy elbow pits? Maybe it's a characteristic of MSCE's?
  12. Can anyone give me a comparison between Mdk and Suse? That way I can decide wether or not it is worth downloading the whole 5 CD set! (I've noticed it around here somewhere, or is that not the Install ISO's?)ยต Darkelve
  13. Another problem is it is difficult and often impossible to hold them accountable for it.
  14. You mean something like this? http://www.nwfusion.com/newsletters/techex...1techexec1.html Just substitute 'Novell' with Linux and you get the idea...
  15. What about Slicker in XFCE? How would one go about that??
  16. I don't think their/our English will be their biggest worry. I do not know how well English in Iraq is being taught and used, but I would be surprised if they based their opinions solely on that. Anyhow, I can only speak in my own name, but I will be sure to remind them that if they want to, they can have a look here and that there will be a lot of people waiting here to give them good advice. Can we really change anything? I do not know, but I know it is worth trying to! Edit: okay, I subscribed. I'm pretty curious for that first batch digest now...

  18. maybe we can just say something in the likes of "we'll be here when you need us?" Kind of like free consultancy ;) ? Since we have no stake in anything, this source will be a lot easier for them to trust.
  19. got the IT-numbskull blues, don't you. Don't worry, I have them too sometimes. I think most of us do... I'm using Windows NT 4.0 workstation now, what a sad sad OS... and we're "Upgrading" to XP this year!! Our fileserver is 40 (60)? Gigabites big for over 30 persons. It's allways full so we regularly have to 'delete some of our files'. WTF!? Even after asking to get a bigger/extra harddisk (how much is a 120GB hard disk nowadays anyway), they still refuse to do it; too difficult! And instead of teaching the people here a little bit on how to zip old files you don't really need on a regular basis anymore, or to teach them not to send every frigging note in a word document. No: the answer is: please erase your unimportant files. They harm our precious little fileserver!
  20. It was even in the 'Metro' today, a commuters magazine read by thousands of persons a day in Belgium! They already did a short article about OpenOffice. They also did an article today on the popularity of MSN messenger, but not forgetting to mention the existence of Trillian and Jabber ("the Open Source community has its own open protocol, called 'jabber') and a short explanation on how the closedness of MSN protocol is not necesarrily a good thing, plus the mention that in Germany, a minority uses MSN messenger!. Also, EVEN in Clicxk, a Belgian computer magazine aimed ONLY at mainstream dummie-heads (with lots of pretty pictures and tips only on windows and programs running on it) a copy of OpenOffice was included on the demo CD! I know this is not the 'what in 2004' thread, but I predict a shift of mentality in the press in the coming years (2004 and 2005), then a massive 'defection' to Linux or *nix-based desktops in 2005/2006. Which will of course run kernel 2.6 and lots of other goodies discussed in the '2004' thread. While others will still be waiting for FogHorn. Happy birthday Stallman & co! Your idealism was one of the things that made this possbile! And the people behind the curtains, e.g. it is entirely possible a FLOSS enthousiast is working at Metro now. I'm kind of in a good position as well, so I will make sure our website works in all major browsers (with decent CSS support), in Linux as well! Lol... we're slowly taking over.
  21. FUD is an abbreviation of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. Often used by big companies as a marketing tactic. The tactic consists of spreading feelings of fear, uncertainty, etc. In other words: spreading lies, semi-truths, unproven 'facts', or bending the truth in order to make someone else look bad. A more complete reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FUD
  22. Go Ipithus! (I do wonder if, for some strange reason, we're suddenly going to see a lot more FluxBox users... )
  23. 1. First they ignore you (Linux, what Linux?) 2. Then they FUD you (do you really need an example) 3. Then they sue you (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCO_v._IBM_Linux_lawsuit) 4. Then you win (hey, does that mean we've almost won? )
