  1. I'm just curious if this is a controller issue or a card issue. I glanced through the config file of PCMCIA which tells what module to load for which card, and couldn't find my card anywhere. But would that really stop running the service??? MDE is telling me there is no controller, but Mandrake sees the controller but doesn't want to doanything with it. I suspect it's root lies in the PCMCIA service not running. But how do I get the damn thing to run?
  2. I'm still trying to get my PCMCIA controller to work. I found out that I didn't have the PCMCIA deamon installed so I installed it via mandrakes rpm installer. But it still doesn't seem to work. On boot it says "Starting PCMCIA....Successfull" but in when looking at the running services after boot, PCMCIA is "stopped". I tried starting it, but to no avail. When getting info on the controller from KDE, it says so controller is found, which I suspect is because PCMCIA is not running. Mandrake says I have to configure it to get it to run. But how do I configure it?? Or is this an auto detect issue? I.E. It doesn't recognize the wireless card I have in the slot so it's not running the service? If this PCMCIA daemon is the same as the one that's available at http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net, then it should run on my card controller ( ENE Technology Inc CB1410 Cardbus Controller).
  3. After doing some searching around, is there a service that needs to be installed and running for it to recognize the PC slot? I went through the services last night, tyring to speed up my boot some (turned off apahce, mysql, etc since I don't need them right this second), but I didn't see any services for PCMIA. I have a feeling the root of my problem is at a service that is not running, because Mandrake sees the hardware in question, but is not letting me even try to give it a module. Wheras earlier problems with my sound card, mandrake at least let me choose modules. I've found other people being able to get it working on Mandrake 9.1 but the there is either no contact information or directions and/or the page is in another language.
  4. OK, hopefully this will be the last issue I have and once again, any help is appreciated. My laptop seems to have a ENE Technology CB1410 Cardbus COntroller for the PC card slot. MAndrake doesn't seem to be giving me any modules to choose from, so I am rather at a stand still here. Anyone know what modules need to be installed to get it to work and how to install them? This is the lspci -v output that pertains to the issue: 00:0c.0 CardBus bridge: ENE Technology Inc CB1410 Cardbus Controller Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 5 Memory at 10000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled] Bus: primary=00, secondary=02, subordinate=05, sec-latency=32 I/O window 0: 00000000-00000003 [disabled] I/O window 1: 00000000-00000003 [disabled]
  5. OK, I got it to work. I just reinstalled Mandrake 9.2 (last night I just threw windows onto the entire HD and figured I'll set it to dual boot today). The defaults chosen by mandrake don't work. What I had to do was use the i810 drivers, and turn on the ASLA services. I tried the i810 drivers last night, but I think it never tried to run the ASLA service, because during the install I found the option to turn it on at boot, and it was unchecked. Now my nextissue is to get the PC slot (for a wireless card) to work. I don't think mandrake has detected it. But that's not urgent.
  6. It's a Element Mercury 700m. It's a new OEM laptop distibuter, so the specific information is hard to come by. I e-mailed the manufactorer and he said it's an SiS Audio Controller and that under Debian it works fine with the i810 driver. But earlier I had done a fresh install of Lycoris (what it originally came installed with) and I swear that it was trying to use the i810 driver, but to no avail. Under windows XP, it says it's using a realtek ac97 driver.
  7. I installed mandrake 9.2 onto my new laptop, but aI can't get the sound to work. The drivers/modules loaded by default by mandrake did not work at all. I neean ac97 driver, can where can I get one, or if I should use a driver that is already in mandrake, which one should I use? I installed windows XP to check to be sure it wasn't a hardware issue (sound works fine on windows), so unfortunately I can't recall which driver mandrake was trying to use, I think it was snd something. I watched the bootup and when it got to loading the sound modules, I always got an error. I'd be grateful for any help, thanks.
  8. well it's a new company, Element Computer, so the laptop isn't listed at the above website.
  9. I just got a new laptop that came with Lycoris installed. Lycoris sucks, don't use it. I managed to hose the system after only a couple hours (I tried to update some libraries to get gcc and g++ working, it stopped EVERYTHING from working) so I reinstalled the whole OS. And suddenly the sound won't work anymore, but everything else works A-OK. I think it has to do with Lycoris not probing the hardware correctly *shrug*. After playing around with it for a while, I figured I'll just screw it and go with the original plan of installing Mandrake 9.2 on it. Because I was having issues with the sound after reinstalling Lycoris, I wanna make sure I won't have any problems with the sound when I install mandrake. These are the audio specs that came with the laptop: AC'97 2.1 compliant interface Compatible with sound blaster pro Advanced Wavetable Synthesizer Direct Sound 3d Accelerator Full-Duplex Virtual AC3 Should I expect any issues?
  10. I posted this article over at linuxforums.com and I thought you guys might enjoy it too: http://www.divisiontwo.com/articles/mcse2.htm (and before people start getting all pissed off at it and post a long rant refuting every word in the article, read some other articles at www.divisiontwo.com)
  11. www.elementcomputer.com They also sell laptops that come pre-loaded with Linux (Lycoris Desktop/LX). The cheapest model ($799) gets you (base model): 14" screen 2.0 GHZ P4 30 Gig HD 256 MB RAM I dunno about quality or anything. My parent's bought me the laptop described above but I haven't gotten it yet, so I can't make any claims as to how good they are. I also wish they'd let you choose a linux distro, but they prolly made a deal with Lycoris. I'm planning on dual booting it with Mandrake. At least since it comes with a Linux distro installed and (supposedly) fully working there have got to be drivers and such available for all the hardware.
  12. Ok. Again, sorry for the probable ease of these questions, but whenever I've done paritions it was usually paritioning one HD into 2 partitions via the Windows install CD, so I don't know the nit and grity of it all. And these are premptive questions so I have a bit of an idea of what needs to be done, so sorry for any lack of information. I'm not sure if that the people that installed Lycoris onto the laptop made an extended partition, or if they just used the 4 primary partitions. How do I tell if they are primary partitions or logical drives off of an extended partition? I assume I'll be given the option of whether or not a new partition is supposed to be a logicasl drive off of the extended partition. Assuming worse case scenario, and they used primary partitions for all the partions, will I just be able to resize one of the primary partions and create an extended partition off of the remaining space? Is there an option to make the partition an extended partion?
  13. Ok. So then exactly what partitions do I need to make for Mandrake? I assume a boot partion will be needed. I doubt I'll need to make an extra swap. Is there any other partitions that should be made? I'm not entirely clear on Mandrake's file system and what partitions it creates, etc.
  14. I'm completely new to Linux, so feel more than free to talk to me like I'm 8 years old. In fact, I'd prefer it that way. I'm getting a new laptop in 2 weeks. The laptop comes with the Lycoris distro installed and configured. That's all well and good, but after reading reviews of Lycoris, it seems to be lacking. As such I've decided to dual boot it with Mandrake 9.2 so I can get the stuff I want while still having a functioning Linux OS incase things go awry (although I don't ecpect to have much of a problem as the laptop's hardware obviously works with Linux). So I have a few questions, as I wanna make sure I know how to go about doing this. (i'm currently looking at the 9.1 install guide for a bit of information. I assume the install is pretty much the same in 9.2) During the mandrake install, what option do I choose when it asks where I want to install the OS? Do I just tell it to use existing partitions? Or would that overwrite Lycoris? Or does that just throw an additional kernel onto the partion? I'm assuming this is the way to go. If the option is available, should I tell it to use free space? Or is that option only available if Windows is installed? Or should I create my own custom partitions? I'm not sure if the laptop will be using lilo or be usign grub by default. Do I have to worry about the Mandrake install overwriting the prexisting bootloader without listing listing Lycoris as an option? If it does wipe Lycoris from the bootloader, how do find the kernel file that Lycoris is supposed to use to boot?
