  1. Just burned and tried it. I really liked it too. One warning though: if you try to play videos and you hear sound but the screen is black, doesn't mean its not working. It means it doesn't have the codecs to play the video (you'll see that in their Release Notes). You can download those of course, but SuSe does not include them by default.
  2. Here's a thought: IBM is 'using' Novell as a kind of a battering ram for Desktop Linux. They do not want to take the risk of going that direction for fear it will fail for them. They also do not want to miss out on it. No doubt they have seen the leverage Micro$ofts monopoly on the desktop has given them in other areas such as server etc. and fear this. They also realize this probably means getting in the race with Longhorn's release. So they cannot afford to sit idle and wait. Enter Novell: a taning company with a lot of IT expertise that has to change directions or face the consequences. Linux is ideally suited to complement their offerings. They acquire SuSe and Ximian to fill in the missing pieces and get help from IBM in the form of funding. IBM benefits since it does not have to take risks itself, but can see where this goes and hop on the bandwagon when they see fit. Already Linux runs on most of their hardware and they provide services for that. Novell benefits since they get lots of publicity and recognition. At the same time, their approach makes perfect sense for their corporate offerings. Perhaps they are/were reluctant with regard to the desktop part, but agree with IBM to go through with it. Through contacts with SuSe people, the enthousiasm catches on to Novell, providing even more fuel for the plan. At Brainshare, the decision to run the entire event on Linux desktops especially is an omen IMhO. So all pieces of the puzzle are in place now and they are ready for a full frontal assault on M$'s desktop domination. So the snowball is already rolling, but it would be better to let it grow big enough to completely crush M$ with it. Like preparing to launch pre-loaded PC's with Linux combined with a massive ad campaign a couple of months before Longhorn is released... ... oh yeah, and CONSUMERS benefit since the offered computers should be vastly cheaper than the Microsoft ones. (back to reality) Ok, so maybe I am dreaming... but I don't see why this couldn't be successful
  3. Vote for 9.2 Best Mandrake distro I tried yet, although I only tried 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 and 10.0 Community (not counting MandrakeMove) 9.2 + updates is SWEET... Darkelve
  4. me too! What DE's that let you use icons *do* have this option?
  5. Just to make sure you didn't miss it ;)
  6. FYI: There's already a thread on this: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?sho...topic=12434&hl=
  7. There's tons of articles on the web if you really look for it. E.g: http://www.****microsoft.com/content/whatsbad.shtml
  8. This is just a lucky guess really, but perphaps you have to specify a proxy server? Also, what browser are you using?
  9. You can already notice this when you download some video (don't remember all, or particular format, I think I had it with a WMV), then M$ tells you you cannot view it unless you get a key online to unlock it. They do not say it in the message box, but in fact this is DRM applied here. I even think I read somewhere that by clicking 'ok', you agree to use it or to activate that feature in WMP (since it is disabled by default). But I'm not sure of that. They are also shopping for (future) digital content companies like Walt Disney (which already goes with the program), companies in Hollywood and no doubt some big record labels. Anyway, it is way scary. What I find most scary is that we talk about it here OCASIONALLY. In the outside world, people don't realize and probably never heard of it. They're too ignorant of all these issues to understand and THATis what frustrates and scares me. Since what the majority wants, it gets. And if it doesn't complain, all the better for M$ and other lock-in guys. Walk into our little trap, you ignorant user sheeps... muhahaha (evil Gates' laugh). Darkelve
  10. ... driver patches ... XFree86 ... gamma correction That's just not fair! First pretending to be a n00bie and then spreading around all this technical chatter :P Anyway, I'm glad you got it running.
  11. ROFLMAO! That said, did you know one of the services Lindows offers (also to home users, if I understand correctly) is SurfSafe, a kind of VIRUS SCANNER? I always wondered why.
  12. Before I go home, I thought I'd share those with you: http://www.sltrib.com/2004/Mar/03232004/bu...ness/150310.asp http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/53/36455.html
  13. Brenda, Imho (in my humble opinion) it seems like you are trying to rush things too much. You have to prepare at least a bit or you will get into trouble. By the way, what do you mean with 10.0 community D ? I always go to www.distrowatch.com, then find the closest mirror for your country. It also has good reviews and a tutorial on how to download and burn. And again: don't rush things. Darkelve
  14. Yeah, saw it too late. Made a double post and then when I tried to reported it probably mailed the admins about 5 times. I wonder if I should temporarily change my nickname now
  15. Kwallet may be nice, but for a tool that is meant to make life easier, getting to know it SURE is complicated. I think a lot of n00bies are just going to give op on it (probably they won't even find it, cause in my install it was hard to find in the menu structure. Once you set it up, it probably is extremely useful. But it's kind of a nightmare to set it up. Very confusing. Darkelve
  16. If all Mandrake tools are Open Sourced (GPL'ed'), couldn't a particular distribution use it's Windoze font importer/converter tool? After all, if you've got Windows, you probably paid for it, so if you dual boot means in my ignorant user opinion, that you can actually USE the fonts included in Windoze. I don't see the platform you are running here as relevant. So why hasn't any distro done that? Is it due to technical difficulties with regards to font rendering or something? Just guessing out of the back of my nose here... 'cause IMHO this is a great tool for people coming from windoze. Does anyone know? Darkelve
  17. I downloaded, burned and tried the 9.1 Evalution CD today (found the link on Groklaw). For me it was pretty impressive: detected and set up all of my hardware correctly, nice layout and fonts (although a little too *busy* for me) and I noticed especially: - Really good start menu layout. Almost everything made immediate sense to me. - The programs included are many to make it kind of an all-round distro - It autodetected my internet connection and set it up correctly. First non-debian distro to do that. My only gripes are: - It seems like the SuSe config (Yast?) took forever to install/configure/load to the point where you get the KDE login. - No commercial codecs for Kaffeine. I was a bit surprised at first when I tried to play a movie, but only got sound. It wasn't until later when I read the release notes that I thought of that. - (well, not exactly a gripe): the fonts aren't as good as in Mandrake 10. Very readable, yes, but Mandrakes are still better IMHO Looks very professional, however. Darkelve
  18. Pftt... after giving it some thought, I'm not gonna do it. The thing will just not be able to do the minimum I want to do with it... and certainly not without a lot of trouble... I'll be look for a somewhat more up-to-spec old PC that is cheap enough... But thanks for your replies! I think without them my decision to buy or not wouldn't have been this conscious. Darkelve
  19. You mean I can set up my own webserver with this old box? That would be fun. I've been trying to learn apache for a long time now, so... Btw what do you mean use it as a HW router?
  20. I don't think it has a graphics card. At least not with 3D-accelleration with the Nvidia or Ati ones... Perhaps I COULD make a better deal somewhere. Question is: WHERE? Any Belgians know??
  21. Hi, our company is offering "old" computers for sale for €75 VAT included. I just wanted to does anyone use one of these and are they any good? I am considering buying one to install a Linux version on. Here are the specs: Brand : IBM Type : 300PL Model : 6862-850 Pentium II 400 MHz RAM : 64 MB Hard Disk : 4 GB L2 Cache : 512 KB Disk Drive 1,44 Mb Ethernet on Board No cd-rom (Damn. I believe it does have, however, 2 usb ports). No Windows (what would I want that for anyway :P) No software (I'll have that fixed soon :) ) No support after sales (I won't be needing it :D ) No guarantee Note from our IT people: We want to emphasise that these are aged and certainly not suited for heavier graphical applications or games. [hmm... I wonder how Frozen Bubble will run on it, lol ] Delivered with keyboard, mouse and 15" color screen (I guess it's always handy to have those, even if the box itself doesn't get used much) So what do you think/advise? I'd appreciate a quick response, since there are only 20 of those things. Darkelve
  22. Well, you could always check out some reviews: http://www.google.com/search?q=xandros+rev...=utf-8&oe=utf-8 Both Mandrake (10) and Xandros 2 seem excellent distros to me. It all depends on what you want to use it for, I guess.
  23. If you really want to discuss these things with other people, you could set up a blog with your experiences. Or find a webmaster/CSS forum.
  24. Common Aze, cool down a bit. This is not the fault of anybody on this forum... I understand it is painful to have to go through this, but don't work it out on other people. And whatever you plan to do, I hope you will be able to sort things out.
  25. Last time i checked they didn't !!! This makes me happy :) A simple paragraph like this can spare Mandrake a lot of trouble (not only from stubborn donkeys like us mind you!!! Oh and I'm from Flanders as well Sitor...) :D Darkelve
