  1. Hey, we all know the rules of this forum, so I don't think that it is necessary to remind you that staying on topic is one of these rules ! I think it was clear what type of freedom I was talking about (freedom of choice not free of charge), nobody of the other posters seems to have problems understanding this you just began your cvs-x.org-crusade and I just told you that there is a more apropriate place for this I'm not the only one, who has no problems with the cvs-x.org, I would not gain anything by using the powerpack, since my card is NOT ! supported by the commercial ati-driver btw. some other linux distros have used the cvs-x.org, too and what about the users that have an intel-chipset that is only supported by the cvs-x.org ?
  2. Since it seems that some people did not have read my original post: I was talking about wether mandriva (as a company) has betrayed it's roots as a Free Software vendor or not, I never talked about wether it was a good or bad idea (idiotic idea in my opinion, at least they could have packed 6.8.2 as fallback) to integrate a cvs-x.org (this is the topic of another thread). The problem with older nvidia-cards not supported by newer nvidia-drivers just shows the problem of closed-source vs open-source-drivers My notebook is a nice example for this, it has a Radeon Mobility M6 which is NOT supported by the closed-source-ati-driver (which is sometimes alpha-stage at best), but works fine with the oh-so-unstable-x.org-6.9.1-cvs I have four systems currently working with this x.org, three ati and one old s3, I had no problems so far btw I never mentioned the boxed products, I talked about the Free versions, so no official support and nothing to pay for did I talk chinese in my original post ??? :D
  3. Software suspend is already part of the mandriva-kernel, it was something in the different ways of memory-organization between the standard-kernel and the 1GB-kernel that caused my suspend-problems Do you have broadband connection to the internet ? then you can download another linux if you want to test if acpi is working there (it could still be a kernel-related problem) with kernel-versions changing between distributions, there is a chance that you can run into problems with a newer one, although your old version worked before but back to your problem, when does this problem occur, is your fan running from startup, or does it begin after some time ? in my /proc/acpi/fan there is just a file that shows the status of my fan (on or off) I don't know if it helps but the acpi/cpu-related stuff I have installed is: acpi acpid suspend-scripts suspend-scripts-force (not necessary, since you can do those changes by hand) cpufreq cpufreqd cpudyn i586-up1GB-kernel (multimedia-kernel worked, too) in this way acpi (I'm mainly interested in cpu-temperature-monitoring), dynamic cpu-frequency-scaling (helps to keep my system cooler than before) and suspend-to-disk work
  4. did you want to disable the nfs-server ? nfs, nfslock and portmap are services involved with the nfs-server netfs is the client side, it mounts all external network-filesystems on your machine so if you want to disable nfs-server, make sure to disable the services nfs, nfslock and maybe portmap (beware, portmap could be used by some other services)
  5. ok, so if you don't have a prolem with ati and nvidia trying to earn some money, I don't know why you seem to have a problem with mandriva trying to earn some money, too btw the OOo-tarball contains some easily installable rpms (there is even an Installation guide in there)
  6. I did not talk about the Mandriva crap-idea of including a cvs-x.org, this was discussed elsewhere, and I already made my point clear in this posts, so I don't see the need to post it again, I talked about ati and nvidia making such a secret about their drivers and not releasing the specs about their cards (at least those that a programmer would need, to build a decent driver), so still blame nvidia and ati. I don't see the problem with OpenOffice2 since you can obtain it directly from OOo (they use rpms now), hey I think I mentoined that already
  7. Have you tried another linux-distribution (to see if it is mandrake/mandriva-specific problem or kernel-related) or another mandrake/mandriva-kernel ? On my notebooks Suspend always only works with the i586-up1GB-kernels
  8. Seems that the acpi on your notebook is not fully supported by mandriva at the moment, normally trip_points are configured already, sorry acpi is still a bit complicated on linux, it's an all-or-nothing game most of the time and getting it to work by hand can really be a painfull experience (be prepared to get some grey hair in the process :D ) maybe a BIOS-upgrade can help, since many ACPI-related problems are results of badly programmed BIOS-routines (in windows this is no problem because of specifically designed drivers, but linux needs a functioning ACPI-compliant BIOS)
  9. Are you running 2005 or 2006 ? the problem with the file shareset is a mandriva 2006 bug: have a look at http://qa.mandriva.com/twiki/bin/view/Main...Linux2006Errata > Perl setuid not working properly > filesharing not working properly you can still share your harddrive even if it's not in your home-directory, but it's a bit more complicated (not much indeed), since it seems that you have already samba installed, you could define /mnt/hdb1 as a public share (so everyone in the LAN can access it), this place is a bit short to explain filesharing with samba, my best advice at the moment is to read the samba documentation. If you are running 2006, then you could install the drakwizard-base rpm, then you can setup a samba-server through the MCC (it really works ! :D )
  10. My personal experience with outlook-use in companies was exactly what gowator said: it was mostly used for email, the funny thing was, although there was a public adress book most of the guys had a personal too (containing mostly adresses that where already in the public) and yes they had outlook-courses
  11. I promised artee to advert his site, I tend to keep my promisses :D
  12. afaik, this mem-thing is an old remnant, but still is there as a last-chance option if your system is to silly to find the right amount of RAM :D Normally it's never needed nowadays (at least I have never needed it in the last 4-5 years)
  13. @ dianat you can install rpms with the nodeps option (then it will install without watching for dependencies on other rpms @ arctic if you are looking for a german version with everything (and more) included you can download an iso from: http://www.prooo-box.org/
  14. It's a Live-CD like Mandrake Move, but it is Debian-based It's really great for system-recovery, imaging your harddisk, testing if your newly accquired computer is linux-capable... and just for having fun with it Knoppix-Homepage: http://knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html
  15. If you ever wanted LDAP as Directory Service with single-sign-login and never wanted to configure it completely by hand (though it is not as difficult as it seems :D ), this might be something for you: http://directory.fedora.redhat.com/wiki/Main_Page (starting to download !!!)
  16. Maybe GRUB will work better, as far as I know you can put that mem-thingie there under kernel or boot-options (it has something similar like the append-line in lilo, I just don't know the place, since I did not use GRUB very often, it seems it doesn't like my hardware :D )
  17. Linux in a Nutshell told me that append mem tells the system the amount of available memory (I think o'reilly's authors know what they write :D ), but I'm not really sure about this either sorry about the borked partition, this can be since lilo was literally writing into nowhere, believing there are 4 GB
  18. what is your physical memory (RAM) ? 2 or 4 (I'm jealous :D ) GB sorry, maybe I was a bit unclear, in the append line you must put in your available RAM > mem=2048M if you have 2 GB RAM, if you have 4 then I just don't know, why it does not work
  19. If you use lilo, you can state the amount of memory in the append-line with mem=MEMORYSIZE, maybe this helps
  20. Maybe the command could be drakx11 now, in there you can choose your monitor and in this list there is a section called generic monitors, there you will find generic flatpanels, just choose the one with the correct resolution and it should work
  21. The two graphics controllers shown in XP are basically one, XP just shows the internal display and the external vga-out as two seperate items 85x should be the right one, but afaik some versions of mandriva had problems with the intel 852/855, maybe you try the standard vesa-driver (should be somewhere in the list) or you use a newer mandriva version (the newer x.org graphics drivers should work with your hardware) you can reconfigure your graphic-setup from the console by typing drakx11, there just pick the vesa-driver
  22. Mandriva, or better Linux in general does not like those onboard-RAIDs very much, if you want RAID anyway, best idea would be to set up a software-RAID in Linux (can be done at installation-stage and works stable, and you can even set up RAID-5, at least if you have a third harddrive) those onboard-IDE-RAIDs are mostly dumb (they are not really hardware-RAIDs most of the time, just use a windows driver for their RAID-functions), so a pure software-RAID under linux will give the same results real hardware-IDE-RAID-Controllers are those from 3ware and they cost big money (more than a mainboard)
  23. have you tried "reload system-menu" (don't know if it's the exact label, have no english system at the moment, sorry) in menudrake I had this problem some time ago, but resetting the menu this way always helped
  24. seems to have none maybe xine (kaffeine uses its engine) itself has one ?
