Yes Linux is installed, I did that by using a live cd version. However I do believe there is a grub version for windows. I will look that up as well.

I am in the process of trying just what you want to do. The method I am trying is to copy the i586 folder from my pc's dvd over a network to the laptop. Once the copy process is complete I will add an entry to grub to point to the newly copied folder. Just how I'm not sure just yet but if you can wait a little longer I will work it out and post it all on here as 'Tricks & Tips' Assuming it works of course.

Whilst the above suggestion is correct you may lose some other menu items added by your other OS. Another thing you can do is right click on the menu button and launch the menu editor. You can then add, delete and rearrange to your hearts content.

Ah the Software Management gui gotcha! Look at the top left combo box and check that it says 'All' in there. That got quite a few of us with 2008.1 ;)

The next step then would be to boot into safe mode, once you are at the single user command prompt type init 3 this should boot to run level 3. If that is a success log in with your user name and password and check dmesg that way. If you freeze again restart and boot to safe mode. At the single user command prompt type less /var/log/syslog This will be rather a long text log so when this is on your screen hit 'End' which will take you to the end of the log. From there using the Page Up key search through the log for the time you restarted your computer and check, the lines above this point, for what udev is doing. Hopefully you will find a clue in the form of an error statement, or an 'oops' statement.

I forgot you say that your 'puter freezes, how long have you waited before restarting? I suggest waiting a while (upto 60secs) and I think udev will resolve and complete the boot process. Once at the desktop then for dmesg open a console and type the command dmesg This will give you the sequence of events during the boot process. Check for anything to do with udev that is reported/failed. Don't worry about the Mandatory Access Control report, I get this without causing problems.

At a guess, if you have none of the USB devices plugged in, udev is trying to initialize a device that is not there. Check dmesg to see if there is any errors listed or, try plugging in each device one by one and see if one of them makes a difference. I know that may be a long winded job, but that would be my troubleshooting approach. Unless someone can say which device it would be of course. If you can come up with an answer you will be at the cutting edge and can be a leader.

Kmail does all you want and a little bit more. I have used it for quite a long time without issues. I have tried others including Thunderbird, but if you use KDE environment then kmail just sits and keeps checking for mail at the interval you set.

An interesting read that Spinynorman thank you for posting it. Let's hope it can really make a difference if adopted. What we really need is some way of stopping these botnets that spew spam out daily. Upto a few weeks ago I got very little spam in my inbox, but I must have registered somewhere using my primary email address, I now get about 150 a day.

Do you see the segfault! I think that will be why the system is rebooting. What's causing it I don't know, but going by your first post I would suggest it is something you have installed during your update. Maybe someone can offer more help from there.

I think I know what the misunderstanding is here. In the classic KDE desktop one has four desktops whereas with the cube there is only one desktop and four windows. So the answer to the original post is it cannot be done with the cube. In the classic mode the icon at the top left of the title bar does give me the option of sending a window to any of the other desktops plus some other functions. I hope this is of help.

Well if it turns out to be the extender you will also have a novel paper weight. Let us know the outcome.

There is your fault report. What have you running from USB? I used to have a USB extender that did exactly what you are experiencing and it turned out to be the extender itself. Its now a paper weight.

Now I feel a right plonker I never even thought about you guys with real serious gear. I did say it was a stupid question though!

I am going to ask a rather stupid question here, but, what is the purpose of VMware? Although I realise one can run a choice of operating systems with this method, but surely to run one of the many OS's one still has to sort of install the chosen OS and therefore not really gain anything! Or am I on the wrong track, or even off my trolley?

You forgot to add the warnings and gotchas about permanently logging in as root, such as screwing up the system good and proper when system files are deleted. Yes you can still do such things from the console, but it is much more unlikely. I've now been using Linux for about 8 years and never needed to run the root account in a gui. I will admit to firing up Konqueror as root on the very rare occasion when it was easier to use it that way, but immediately close it when the particular chore was completed. Always remember that running your entire system from the root account is like boating in a deep lake and throwing your life jacket away. ;)

Or maybe Kdepasswd​ if you are using the kde desktop.
