  1. So is this going to become the home for MUsB now? Or will we switch back to the old mandrakeusers.org url later? The FAQ links and Search links in my signature will need updated for the new location, but if we're going to move again, no need to do it now? Can one of the mods/admin respond when you have time so we can adjust those links? :)
  2. Not sure if it is just me or what... Did a "fast reply" to a post and then could no longer see the post. I tried to see some other new posts and same thing... all had frame but no text and sometimes the wrong message opened. Then I went to check MY CONTROLS to see if I had accidently goofed up a setting. While in there, I saw moderator only links in my private mailbox but when I clicked it did say no access. So something was going on. I logged out and back in but same results so I closed Firebird and cleared the cache and history and seems to work now. Just wanted you to know... If you need some testing let me know, I'll be in and out for a bit yet. :) EDIT: now my avatar has disappeared... EDIT AGAIN: I uploaded it again... EDIT THIRD TIME: this is like talking to myself, right? Think the posts on the new board that I have done today are wiped out by the update. Looks like the update process might have been what was causing this strange behaviour. I see anon's post about just finishing it. Looks good and I am getting used to the minor changes here and there. Thanks for everyone's efforts. :)
  3. Sorry for delay... I am in SE Asia and I think you are in Europe, right? So we have a big time gap between us. I am just waking up here. Yes, the MCC thing needs to be able to block you from doing a kernel upgrade or be fixed to do the kernel upgrade properly. What a pain! We still need some of the more experienced bunch to help us out. I am not sure I know enough to help you. I "think" the kernel you used is a special patched version and it is likely the modules you need are now included in the new 9.2 upgrade kernel that was just released. I "think" the problem you have now is that by doing a kernel upgrade via MCC, it did not properly edit /etc/lilo.conf and run it so now it is a bit "lost" and doesn't load the modules you need. But this is new territory for me so I'd feel better if one of the people with more kernel and linux experience than I have would help too. It would help if you could post your /etc/lilo.conf and /etc/fstab files. Calling on the vets for some more experienced help here??? Anyone?
  4. For future reference, you should not update the kernel using Mandrake Control Center's tools. I do not understand why they don't disable that ability as it can cause problems. Hang on and let's let some of the more experienced guys help us out a bit. I think we can get you going but will take some fixing. The kernel rpm should be something like: 9.2/RPMS/kernel-2.4.22.21mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm When you say marcelo is that the mirror or update site you used? EDIT: Looks like this is a cooker kernel or did you get it from kernel.org? http://speakeasy.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/coo....2mdk.i586.html
  5. Hmmm... I'm not sure I can help, but I know we'll need to know what kernel you installed? Can you tell us: 1) which specific kernel you installed ? 2) how you did it? (i.e. what command did you use? urpmi, rpm -Uvh, install software, etc.) 3) did you edit /etc/lilo.conf? and then run the lilo -v command before restarting? with the answers to these questions, the veterans will be more able to help! (I'm just a rookie...you may need a veteran for this one) :)
  6. Interesting... from the webpage at bottom: Sounds like it runs in background and enables the keyboard to use the Greek fonts. What happens if you do the left mouse click? (or did you define another 'switch key' during setup?) If you click the right mouse button, can you scroll thru layouts as they imply? If so, then, try opening a WP program and type something. Does it use the Greek font now? If you don't have middle mouse button I think you click both buttons at once to emulate it, but that depends on your mouse setup too.
  7. I think the logic is they tried to pack as much as they could on the 3 cd's and decided _not_ to include the kernel source so they could add something else. I know I read some cooker comments related to a decision of what to keep and what to make users download. So it was a tough call that someone had to make. After the dust settles, I do not think they will leave it out next time. Lots of complaints about that choice! ;)

    kmail and GnuPG

The open gpg plug is a bit complicated. I dug up some info the other day but, I haven't done it yet. Here is a pointer to a website that might help. http://kmail.kde.org/kmail-pgpmime-howto.html https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1292 from Mdk bugzilla
  9. Thanks for verification... my isp is sluggish today so I figured it was just them. Been down since 0830 our time so that is LONG server maintenance... it is 1430 here now! Hope that is all it is... sort of not the same without Texstar though... :?
  10. It is probably routing, but I haven't been able to get my daily fix of pclinuxonline.com today... been timed out and I even tried another isp to see if the route would make it. Anyone else having problems hitting pclinuxonline.com site today? Tracepath dies at 216.139.171.173 from my location. This ip is part of PANAMSAT which my isp uses for secondary backbone.
  11. I have not installed 9.2 yet, so these are merely random thoughts: I think Dragonmage is correct, you probably need to use the source version or check out how the current .src.rpm is pointed. Did you rebuild the .src.rpm again or use the same rpm you had setup for 9.1? I think you need to rebuild for the new version to work properly. You might try rebuilding the .src.rpm for the new kernel. (you need kernel source to do this) My guess is the kernel is the key, and in fact there may already be a kernel module present to work with acpi and allow acpi to perform this function. Do you have acpi running as a service in 9.2? That might even be kewler. :)
  12. I don't have 9.2 installed yet. Heard they have broken lots of the KDE rpms into different modules. If you are running the default KDE desktop then you should be able to set this in the KDE Control Center. Go to PERIPHERALS--MOUSE and on the General tab under Icons you can set the response to single or double click. If this is not visible, then it may not be installed yet so you could check in the gui INSTALL SOFTWARE and look at the descriptions of KDE packages you don't have installed yet. If you are in another window manager it should be something similar. HTH!
  13. I have a good friend running OS X on a G5 dual server and a desktop. He loves it and we have installed several open source products on it. Most all of the *nix commands work and he is turning into a cli junkie! I think you should keep OS X and dual boot if you really must, but from what I hear, it works great! Enjoy... Guess you cannot vote in this Laptop forum... probably didn't set that feature when it was created a while back?
  14. Good question... they both are basically the same AFAIK, but wget seems a bit more robust and sometimes gets the job done better. Most of the "old pro" crowd seem to recommend using it and I have learned to listen to the voice of experience. Using wget has worked for me a couple times when I had problems getting things downloaded. Another tip is to avoid peak use hours on the internet. In other words find times when your area and the mirror you use are not in times when the most people are logged into it. Normally 0900-1200; 1400-1500; 1700-1800 and 2200-2230 seem to be peak usage times in my area. Your mileage may vary... curl: wget: Lots of ways to get this kind of info. I often use the REMOVE SOFTWARE option to view where files are and what files are part of the package. Take a look and turn on Max info button. You can do it from cli with rpm too. Or better yet try using man wget and man curl and you can learn the syntax of the commands. I like to do this in Konqueror by typing man:command_name (i.e. man:wget ) in the Location window. It is easier to read in Konqueror.
  15. Most of the time this is due to a busy site that times you out. Sadly, there is no error that tells you this. Try again after letting some time go by. You can also add the --wget switch to force it to use wget instead of curl for downloading. #urpmi.update --wget -a If it doesn't work, you might need to find another site to use. Right now with all the 9.2 fever, the mirrors are busy but it should get better until the public release of the iso's when it will start all over again!
  16. Kernel-source is no problem to add and no editing is required. You can even do it from Mandrake Update w/o a problem. But the kernel itself is another story! For future reference; Here's the best way to upgrade a kernel in Mandrake: http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/kernelupdate.php Just follow the steps carefully. Ignore the PPC part unless you are running a Mac. I learned to use the --test switch with both rpm and urpmi. It runs without actually installing anything (simulates an install) and either tells you the install is possible, or it tells you what is wrong so you can fix it. The code is # urpmi --test whatevertherpmnameis.rpm OR # rpm --test whatevertherpmnameis.rpm If it is "possible to install" then run it again without the --test switch in the command and it will install it. This is a great way to check things _before_ you actually run the command. Many thanks to Aru for teaching me this! If you need help, let us know and lots of people here are willing to help! :)
  17. Sorry for slow reply; I was out for church and a nap! ;) This is the setup I used from Texstar 9-25 updates. Downloaded them all into a temp setup directory and as root ran #urpmi --test -v *.rpm first. I cannot remember everything, but seems like there was another dependency I needed to grab first. I use the --test -v switches most of the time so I can see what is going on in more detail. If the test is ok, then I rerun it without the --test part and I'm good to go. The key for me was to learn to open the browser if I tried to use the gui. I think you always must leave a browser open, as it downloads the torrent file via http first and then sets up the swarm. The browser will ask you what you want to do with the file-- You must choose to open it with the bittorrentgui.py program and it will download it to your harddrive after asking you where to put it. Remember that file location in case you cancel and restart. (if you stop and want to restart, you need to close the browser and reopen it first) It takes a bit to get going so if you don't get an immediate error, hang on for a few minutes and watch for modem or router activity to see what's going on. You can also run $ netstat -tc and see if anyone is in process of linking to you. (stop it with ctrl-c ) Once it flows, have a cup of coffee or something and don't drive yourself crazy watching. It takes a good bit to startup but once it goes it is pretty robust. My cable connection went down a couple times but it restarted itself once the cable popped back on... I was impressed. :-)
  18. bittorrent-3.3-1tex available from Texstar, but there are lots of Mandrake versions. You have to open a browser to use the gui even if you are entering that command from cli. I used MozillaFirebird and see others are using Mozilla and Konqueror with success. Some of the other browsers do not seem to work. I did not edit anything and already had mailcap installed. It just worked out of the box once installed. Hope this helps!

    md5sums

My md5sum for Powerpack agrees with Steve's post. I wanted to know the md5sum mostly so I could check cd's once they are burned. Have not installed 9.2 yet, but my cd1 boots to the install screen just fine! From what I hear, bittorrent cd's should not be burned until the entire torrent is downloaded. Lots of people complained of problems because of cd's burned prior to commpletion.
  20. I do not think we have a bittorrent faq on this site. There are plenty of them available though. http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/FAQ.html http://www.dessent.net/btfaq/ and on the Mandrake Club homepage there are more links you can check but some may not work if you are not a club member. www.mandrakeclub.com It is a bit of a pain to setup, but if it works, it is nice! I downloaded the 9.2 iso's but due to my location and slow 64k connection it took 2.5 days at 10+K download speed. :? But, hey, I got them downloaded and uploaded to help others too!
  21. From MozillaFirebird bookmarks--bookmarks toolbar folder--Mozilla Plugins http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/phoenixlin.html There are a couple bugs reported that mess with RealPlayer and Flash. Maybe that is part of the problem you are facing? Another thought is to check the Configuration files: http://texturizer.net/firebird/edit.html and see if there is a setting there that applies. I don't use RealPlayer so cannot tell on my version. EDIT: Looks like you use KDE. Did you try the File Associations and check what is registered for Real Audio? K-->Configuration-->KDE-->Components--File Associations-->audio-->x-real-audio Settings there might override things too. HTH point you in the right direction!
  22. I don't think urpmi is dead, just wounded! I didn't do a source perl install but had a similar problem once and this url helped me. http://www.twuug.org/lists/twuug/2002-11/msg00059.html Take a look at it and see what you think. Your problem is a bit different, but as I recall, there were several related things to this so try a google with your error and you might find something more precise. Hope this helps point you in the right direction.http://www.google.com/search?q=compilation...=utf-8&oe=utf-8
  23. Good work finding the fix! Fun to learn but frustrating at times too, eh? Enjoy mandrake!
  24. Bottom line, it is much better if you follow anon's suggestion and use the rpm install method. I didn't realize anyone had made one yet! Delete (move to Trash Can if you want to save it for a bit to be sure) the MozillaFirebird directories you have now and download and run the rpm. If you do not have kpackage installed you can use urpmi or rpm commands to install it. RE: any differences in files may be due to some extensions and things I added to MozillaFirebird after the install. So you do not need all the same packages necessarily, the important part is the permissions on the executable file. If yours are different, that points to the problem you are having. In Linux you should be able to check the MD5SUM of any package by going to the directory and typing $ md5sum <filename> (w/o brackets). Then you match the resulting LONG number with one on the download site. That tells you that your file is the same and not corrupted or tampered with by someone. But I didn't see a md5sum for MozillaFirebird on the site. Might be there, but I didn't find it in a quick look. Since I have a different release the md5sum will be different than yours so it is not helpful either. Again-- take the easy route for now and install the rpm would be my advice.
  25. I think we're getting to the same interface via a different menu lineup. Mine works via both menu paths. Have you posted a question on the texstar site yet? He monitors here now and then, but he's a busy guy so it would be faster to try there. Your problem is curious so I'll keep poking on it a bit to see if I can come up with anything, but so far I don't have a solution. At least you are not "wide open" security-wise. If I find anything, I'll let you know.
