  1. I like it! We have a bunch of bug fixes coming in the next release... due soon Those will fix a lot of issues. What we really need is more people with different types of hardware to help in finding the bugs and quirks. Texstar is great at getting them fixed and the mkliveCD guys do a super job of providing the things people are asking them to provide. So far, so good.
  2. Dragonmage and I have been helping Texstar beta test PCLinuxOS for the last few weeks. I would say that it would NOT be a good idea to use the PCLinuxOS rpm's with a standard Mandrake 9.2 install unless you really know what you are doing. There are some specific tweaks in the some of the rpms that make them different from Mandrake in some cases. Some of them may work, but many of them will not as they are built to run with specific changes and modifications that Texstar added. Most of the KDE packages have been done using totally different themes, icons, styles, etc that sometimes use different directories than a standard Mdk install. So if you use them you'll probably have some conflicts. So I'd advise caution if you decide to go that route because you'll very likely break something and have a hard time finding it. You might post a question about specific rpms on the www.pclinuxos.com site in the PCLinuxOS forum. Texstar is a great guy and he might be able to tell you which ones are safe to use.

    USB card reader

scoopy, Sorry man... I am not running 9.2 and don't have usb 2 here. My card reader is detected fine in 9.1 on both boot or hotplug but your fstab entries look a bit different than mine yet looks like they theoretically should work. (I don't think the kudzu works in mdk unless you install the package, but hey... if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?) my fstab for the card reader is: /dev/sda1 /mnt/removable auto user,iocharset=iso8859-1,kudzu,codepage=850,noauto,exec 0 0 Since your other devices are detected ok, it sounds like it might boil down to some hardware type of thing. Hmmmm. Wierd it worked before and won't now... Is the card reader a multi slot reader or single?
  4. I'm not running 9.2 yet, but they have split up some of the kde packages and that is likely part of the problem. If you are running the default desktop it is not finding kpackage or any other package tool. You need to setup file associations with an application set to open .rpm files. You can use urpmi from the command line and actually it is much better. I prefer using it to double click installs because you get more feedback. Here's what I do: 1. Copy the rpm(s) you want to install into a separate directory 2. Open konsole or your fav terminal 3. cd to that directory 4. first test the install to see if there are problems. Become Superuser : type "su" (no quotes) and enter your root password. 5. then run #urpmi -v --test *.rpm (or you can name the specific package) Then you will get a "test" run that checks if you have dependency problems... by running -v you get good feedback. The "test" will tell you if it will install properly or if you need more files or have some other conflict. 6. If all is well, run #urpmi -v *.rpm and it will install for you 7. If you have a conflict or missing dependency the feedback will tell you which files are needed, etc. then you need to download them to the directory and try again. 8. After install, don't forget to exit root # exit Make sure to upgrade urpmi and all the drak packages too. There are lots of updates for 9.2 that fix some serious bugs. Hope this gets you going!
  5. Wow! Great find! Thanks for posting this! :D
  6. :D Yahoo! Thanks for sharing the fix Chris! I totally overlooked that possibility too. Kscd was keeping the device busy and I didn't think about checking for it in connection with the drive. DUH!

    Scribus install

I have Scribus 1.0 installed on my 9.1 I installed three tar'ed packages using checkinstall method so I can easily remove them later. You'll need lcms-1.10.tar.gz ; scribus-i18n-en.tar.gz ; scribus-1.0.tar.gz (will differ according to the version you use of course.) Texstar has a rpm for 9.1 but his main ibiblio.org 9.1 depository is no longer available. You can try his secondary mirrors at: Texstar 9.1 link one or Texstar 9.1 link two I have only played with it but it seems to run well. Hope this helps. :)
  8. Glitz, Yes, I figured that is exactly what I would do... buy direct from Dell. I do like the way they package things at Emperor Linux but the price is too high. Hey, half the fun is trying to make everything work anyway, right? It is nice to know someone was able to get it all working so I don't have to be the guinea pig.
  9. Chris, I have the same problem... posted many months ago. My CD-ROM is an Asus 52x and it is super nice, but will not eject except as root. I get the same error and everything checks out fine otherwise. I have tried to get answers from Asus and Mdk but no luck... so I live with it. Wish I had an answer, but I finally accepted it as a firmware/hardware thing as the previous drive (AOpen) worked fine until it wore out. It works fine under Win 98SE which makes me mad...
  10. sorry I'm really busy and don't have any experience with your problem. I would suggest you post a bit more info or start a new post to see if you can stir up some help. Things that would help... let us know which version of mandrake you are running.. .9.1 or 9.2 Have you checked mandrake 9.2 errata? It has some info on alsa sound card config problems. So if you are seeing that error message when it is booting, that might be a good place to start. You can check if cdialog or newt are installed from the Config--Packaging--Install Software. Search for them in rpmdrake and make sure one of them is installed. I took a quick look at some of the HP Omnibook 4150 installs on www.laptop-linux.net and yes, it is a bit technical for a newbie. You might try contacting one of the guys that succeeded and see if they can offer help too. Sorry I'm not versed in the sound config area... I'm guessing it is a bit tougher than normal to get it going, but not impossible. Don't let it get to you... you will overcome!
  11. The one I'm saving my pennies for is at Emperor Linux... It's based on Dell Latitude 800 Check out the RHINO--Click Here! Power & Portability! Nvidia graphics too! :woops:
  12. On my SoundBlaster Live 5.1 I am using the module snd-emu10k1 just to confirm my configuration. Mandrake installed it just fine in 9.1
  13. ramfree17, I have a 32MB Asus TNT2 card and it works pretty well. I can do most game, but I'm not into the heavy stuff. So far it has more than met all my needs. It does 3D and glx gears runs well on it too. If you're on a tight budget, it is an OK choice I think. 64MB would give more options, but unless you are into heavy stuff this will work great. I do Flight simulator, etc on it and don't have problems. :)
  14. rsanjiv, If you did not install cpu cooler software, it probably isn't installed as I don't think any distro installs it by default. So you'd know if you have it. The common names would be Athcool, cpucool, etc. I doubt that it your problem. If I get my broadband up soon I'll try to surf and see if I find any solution for you. You might want to check some other linux boards and google to see if you find any new solutions.
  15. Hi! I am using the SoundBlaster Live 5.1 and the same driver as kuchwas recommended. Works fine, though I don't have a full 5.1 setup, just 2 normal speakers that sound great. Mandrake should actually config it with that setup on install. If not choose it in MCC and it should work fine. Offhand, do you have any cpu cooler software running? That can sometimes cause skips and tweats.
  16. Fantastic! Congratulations! Selamat as we say here! Really glad it worked for you. Spend some time using google and you can almost always find someone else with a similar problem. An answer that works is not always available, but with some effort it is a great resource. This board is number one for me, but sometimes no one here has dealt with that kind of problem and you have to go googling for an answer. Blessings and enjoy the cable connection. My cable modem is still dead and stores are closed until Saturday. :-( Dialup is so slow...
  17. I had a minute so I did a quick surf to see if I could learn more. Sorry I don't have the time to really get into this and help you like I would like to do. I have an important deadline to meet by Sunday nite and am forced to really hustle to get it done. It is encouraging that your modem seems to be initializing and getting a connection to the isp. Now it may boil down to a matter of setting up your network properly to recognize the USB port as your internet connection. We need a network guru... HELP! I found some promising info in a couple threads you might want to look at: Mandrake Newbie CABLE MODEM setup CLICK HERE Click here USB Setup Linux Questions Scroll down a ways for section on kernel module you need to setup for usb cable modem to work (CDCEther) run lsmod -a from the command line to see if it is already loading when your modem is plugged in. If not, run modprobe CDCEther and see what happens when you run lsmod -a again. You should see it in the list of loaded modules. CLICK HERE COM21 modem setup usb This looks good and has instructions: try this too: Then read this thread which is where this comes from and do a search on linuxquestions.org (careful they can be tough on newbies so go slowly) :) Click HERE for this good thread. Good luck, sorry must run! Don't worry in time you'll learn where and how to look for the answers. Linux is fun just different from Windoze! EDIT: another good link Click Here for more on USB cable modem
  18. Sorry I am not more help. I lost my broadband (modem died) and have a big project going. Hope someone comes up with some help for you soon. If not, I'll check back when I am able and see if we can figure this out. Suggest you continue some google searches with terms like 'usb cable modem linux" and various others and see if you come up with anything. There are a couple posts on this site about adsl modems too that may offer some help. Key is finding out if usb is "seeing" your device and if there is a kernel module that will recognize it and initialize it properly. Don't give up. Sorry I must run!
  19. No fun! You might have to resort to an ethernet PCMCIA card which is a bit more spendy. I'm not convinced that it won't work yet either. Have you tried looking at the linux usb site? I'm not on my normal computer and don't have time to look up the link, but try google using search term "usb linux" (no quotes) and look for the site that has linux device setup. They have lots of FAQ and setup info on the site. If you cannot find it let me know and tomorrow I'll check my other computer for the URL. Another thought is to try booting and then plug in the modem. If you are running 9.1 usb hotplug should be active and it might recognize it and set it up. ;) Good luck!
  20. Hmmm.... looks like COM21 has sold out so support is a bit tough, eh? I suggest a google search using "com21 usb cable modem linux" and check the com21 website: COM 21 SUPPORT HOMEPAGE CLICK HERE Here is what I found on the COM21 FAQ for your product: I think you'll need to buy an ethernet card and do it that way. They are quite cheap and easy to install. If you need help holler there are lots of us here that can help. It may still be possible with linux to use the USB connection as it should sense it and hotplug, but an easier solution is use the ethernet and it will automatically set it up on booting. USB can be sort of a pain at times due to the way it is initialized.
  21. I use a P3 850 Toshiba satellite and it works too except for the modem. Also got it going on a Compaq Presario 1260 which is a K6-2/ 333. Go for it. :-)
  22. I agree with you Grant... cli is always the best solution because it gives you more precise control, but not if you don't know how to do it and don't have the time to learn. The easiest way might be to just copy the cd and mail it to him. Low tech but it will save time if you are not able to figure out another way to do this. ;)
  23. hmmm.... I have not tried it yet, but I think that k3b does make the image / iso file and it uses the mkisofs Take a look at the TOOLS--Write ISO image option and I think that will do what you want to do too. from the k3b README:
  24. Peppercorn, Glad you found this site! Think you'll find it a good place to get help! Kmack :)
  25. Joe, Sorry to hear about your wife's illness and will pray for her speedy recovery. I can relate as I have been really afflicted with low blood sugar lately. No fun to feel bad... Let us know when you are back in action!
