linuxrush
Hi Guys, Just wanted to know: is it possible to give KDE's Kicker GNOME like functionality? To be specific: one thing I loved when I used GNOME was whenever I switched to a new desktop, the taskbar would be cleared, and whenever I switched back to the previous desktop, the taskbar would fill with whatever was running on that desktop. So is there a way to make this happen in KDE? thanks, -LR [moved from everything linux by tyme]
Per
What I think you want is to only show the applications running in the current desktop in the task bar and no applications running in other desktops. Start KDE Control Center -> Dekstop -> Taskbar Uncheck "Show windows from all desktops" /Per Lindström

Mhn
In the file .kde/share/config/ktaskbarrc add a a line ShowAllWindows=false under [General] If there is no [General] then simply make one line with that first. You may have to logout/login before the changes take effect. Hope it helps!
neddie
I do not see that option anywhere in:KDE Control Center --> Desktop --> Taskbar Strange - I see it on mine. What distro do you have? (Mandriva 2007?) And what version of KDE (3.5.4?)
scarecrow
Kicker is very customizable, but I cannot see any good reason severely downgrading it to Gnome functionality... 118,7% of the Gnome functions can be done via the formidable KDE vfs, the only thing you must do is learning how to use the KDE vfs (which is really trivial...). dexter11
Try right clicking on kicker somewhere and choose something like configure or properties. No need to edit textfiles if you don't want to do it. It can be done in a GUI.

I had to solve it by adding some lines to a file.
linuxrush
I do not see that option anywhere in:KDE Control Center --> Desktop --> Taskbar Strange - I see it on mine. What distro do you have? (Mandriva 2007?) And what version of KDE (3.5.4?) Hi neddie, Yes, I am using Mandriva 2007 (the 4CD download version). And yes, I am using KDE 3.5.4. I am also running Beryl. could this be because of that? I did a system-wide search for "ktaskbarrc" file and found only two: one resides in my home folder, and the other in usr folder. the first ktaskbarrc: /home/linuxrush/kde/share/config/ and has the following in the file: [$Version] update_info=kickerrc.upd:kde_3_5_taskbarEnums the second ktaskbarrc: /usr/share/mdk/kde/root-interface/ and has the following in the file: [General] GroupTasks=Never LeftButtonAction=Show Task List MiddleButtonAction=Activate, Raise or Minimize Task RightButtonAction=Show Operations Menu ShowAllWindows=false ShowIcon=false ShowOnlyIconified=false ShowWindowListBtn=false SortByDesktop=false Dont know what is wrong with it. What do you guys think? -LR
linuxrush
**NOTE** I am not starting a flameware, neither should I be flamed for what I am about to say. I am just trying to explain my side. :P Kicker is very customizable, but I cannot see any good reason severely downgrading it to Gnome functionality...118,7% of the Gnome functions can be done via the formidable KDE vfs, the only thing you must do is learning how to use the KDE vfs (which is really trivial...). **NOTE** I am not starting a flameware, neither should I be flamed for what I am about to say. I am just trying to explain my side. I dont know about that one, scarecrow. KDE just looks too much like something I am trying to go away from (namely windows ). Then again, I prefer KDE and not GNOME (I like 51% KDE and 49% GNOME). As you can see.. I like both Desktop Environments almost equally... GNOME has a "unique" look to it.... (as oppose to KDE) KDE, On the other hand dosen't have a unique look. it looks like windows desktop (same place for start button, quick launch, taskbar, sys tray and clock ---> bottom of the screen). GNOME has a very good file manager (nautilus): if there are too many files in a folder, you can start typing the name of the file you are looking for, and GNOME will search for it. KDE has a "crappy" file manager - konqueror: it always opens up with it's Navigational panel (on the left) opened. I have to manually press F9 everytime. plus it does not have the built in search ("start typing the name of the file you are looking for in a folder" function) So far I have just listed pros for GNOME and cons for KDE. I can also list pros for KDE and cons for GNOME... but i am not trying to promote one over the other... I am just pointing out what I liked in GNOME, and what I am trying to make my KDE look like. again, like I said in the beginning of the thread, one of the best things I liked (of course, there are more than one) about GNOME was its ability to keep windows to it's related Virtual desktop. I am trying to apply that to KDE, and look how difficult it is proving to be--or maybe its just my copy of the distro. -LR P.S. There should be a hybrid Desktop Environment which combines the functionality of both KDE and GNOME Try right clicking on kicker somewhere and choose something like configure or properties. No need to edit textfiles if you don't want to do it. It can be done in a GUI. HI dexter, Thanks for the reply. However, I cannot do this via GUI. I do not see that option *ANYWHERE* therefore, i am going to give the manual edit try. see where that leads to. -LR
linuxrush
Hi guys, I tested my theory that this is due to Beryl. And I found out that, yes, it is because of Beryl. What I did: I removed Beryl from auto starting, and rebooted my laptop. Then, once logged in, i went back to configuring panels dialog box and found "Show windows from all desktops" check boxes. So now, the question is: is there a way to do this from Beryl? Thanks, -LR Edited November 26, 2006 by linuxrush
Reiver_Fluffi
I don't think so, IIRC compiz and beryl do not play well with the KDE kicker and window switcher, if you are really struggling for an answer, it might be worth giving the beryl forums a try (that I believe is here, but it isn't displaying for me at the moment)
linuxrush
Hi Reiver_Fluffi, Thanks for the reply. No. I am not using compiz... i uninstalled it prior to installing Beryl. Therefore, there should be no problems as far as the conflicts between compiz and Beryl goes. And yes, the beryl project site is not loading for me either. -LR
