hello tyme, Thanks for the reply :) Can't I just downgrade it back to 3.5.4 and then use the SoS or MDE places to install from? OR does my current situation HAS to be resolved before that? Hi guys, Just wanted to know if anyone here has been able to successfully install kde 3.5.5 (from the cooker, I assume)? I tried to install kde 3.5.5, but looks like i failed. Here's what I did: 1. tried adding cooker sources to SMART, using easy urpmi. But it was still not showing kdebase version 3.5.5 in the searches. 2. so i added the sources for urpmi instead. urpmi.addmedia main http://gulus.usherbrooke.ca/pub/distro/Mandrakelinux/devel/cooker/i586/media/main/release with media_info/hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia contrib http://gulus.usherbrooke.ca/pub/distro/Mandrakelinux/devel/cooker/i586/media/contrib/release with media_info/hdlist.cz 3. did this in the Terminal: urpmi kdebase and it gave me the following output: As you can see, I said "y" So, then it installed WITHOUT any errors. so I thought it installed without any problems. 4. so I restarted my system, logged in, and waited for kde to load. 5. after 1 minute or so, the error comes up saying: So, to make the long story short, I do not think I have installed kde 3.5.5 correctly. Good thing I selected additional desktop environment during the Mandriva install, otherwise I would have been completely lost :huh: In conclusion, I would like to ask the community if anyone successfully installed this baby? and if so, how? if not, do you have any suggestions/tips/hints etc. for what I should do to get my KDE upgraded to 3.5.5? Hi Guys, I accidentally deleted my cooker channel from SMART's channel list. And now I cannot upgrade to KDE 3.5.5. Hi Reiver_Fluffi, Thanks for the reply. No. I am not using compiz... i uninstalled it prior to installing Beryl. Therefore, there should be no problems as far as the conflicts between compiz and Beryl goes. And yes, the beryl project site is not loading for me either. -LR

Hi guys, I tested my theory that this is due to Beryl. And I found out that, yes, it is because of Beryl. What I did: I removed Beryl from auto starting, and rebooted my laptop. Then, once logged in, i went back to configuring panels dialog box and found "Show windows from all desktops" check boxes. So now, the question is: is there a way to do this from Beryl? Thanks, -LR

**NOTE** I am not starting a flameware, neither should I be flamed for what I am about to say. I am just trying to explain my side. :P I dont know about that one, scarecrow. :mellow: KDE just looks too much like something I am trying to go away from (namely windows ). Then again, I prefer KDE and not GNOME (I like 51% KDE and 49% GNOME). As you can see.. I like both Desktop Environments almost equally... GNOME has a "unique" look to it.... (as oppose to KDE) KDE, On the other hand dosen't have a unique look. it looks like windows desktop (same place for start button, quick launch, taskbar, sys tray and clock ---> bottom of the screen). GNOME has a very good file manager (nautilus): if there are too many files in a folder, you can start typing the name of the file you are looking for, and GNOME will search for it. KDE has a "crappy" file manager - konqueror: it always opens up with it's Navigational panel (on the left) opened. I have to manually press F9 everytime. plus it does not have the built in search ("start typing the name of the file you are looking for in a folder" function) So far I have just listed pros for GNOME and cons for KDE. I can also list pros for KDE and cons for GNOME... but i am not trying to promote one over the other... I am just pointing out what I liked in GNOME, and what I am trying to make my KDE look like. again, like I said in the beginning of the thread, one of the best things I liked (of course, there are more than one) about GNOME was its ability to keep windows to it's related Virtual desktop. I am trying to apply that to KDE, and look how difficult it is proving to be--or maybe its just my copy of the distro. -LR P.S. And yes, I am using KDE 3.5.4. I am also running Beryl. could this be because of that? I did a system-wide search for "ktaskbarrc" file and found only two: one resides in my home folder, and the other in usr folder. the first ktaskbarrc: /home/linuxrush/kde/share/config/ and has the following in the file: [$Version] update_info=kickerrc.upd:kde_3_5_taskbarEnums the second ktaskbarrc: /usr/share/mdk/kde/root-interface/ and has the following in the file: [General] GroupTasks=Never LeftButtonAction=Show Task List MiddleButtonAction=Activate, Raise or Minimize Task RightButtonAction=Show Operations Menu ShowAllWindows=false ShowIcon=false ShowOnlyIconified=false ShowWindowListBtn=false SortByDesktop=false Dont know what is wrong with it. Hi guys, I went on a little adventure yesterday.... tried to install my first bootsplash, however I failed miserably: https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=37292 I followed the HOWTO guide found here: http://qa.mandriva.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/BootSplashHowTo But that did not work. So my question is, what is the correct way to install a bootsplash? By Bootsplash, I am talking about the screen that hides the background information while loading. Hi Mhn, thank you very much for your help so far. I wanted to know: if i boot from the live CD, (using Mandriva ONE), will I be able to access my boot folder? (and of course, make necessary changes)--i havent tried this yet because I am currently downloading it :). Or do I have to use the rescue mode? because i am afraid that if I mess around with that, i might damage my data and make my distro completely useless. Also, can you please breifly describe this: Sorry if this is a stupid/silly question but how exactly will I go about doing this? Hi Guys, yesterday, i came across a very cool bootsplash from kde-look.org and wanted to give it a try. So, i copied the two directories (images and config) to their respective places (the location is right, i checked) Then I followed the directions in this wiki entry: http://qa.mandriva.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/BootSplashHowTo THIS IS WHERE I MESSED UP - the part that says: therefore, i typed this into the terminal: mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.17-5mdv.img 2.6.17-5mdv the above command gave me an error that said that the file initrd-2.6.17-5mdv.img already exists. So, instead of deleting it and then creating it, i first backed it up, and then deleted it, and then executed the above command mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.17-5mdv.img 2.6.17-5mdv This created the new initrd-2.6.17-5mdv.img file. Then, i restarted my laptop, and it gives me the option to select what i want to boot, when I choose linux or linuxfs or anything related to linux, it tries to load and then errors out with this message: I think all i need to do is replace the new initrd-2.6.17-5mdv.img with the old one, and I will be ok, right? if so, how can i access my files? any suggetions/help/hints/tips would be greatly appreciated. if not, what are other options? thanks, -LR

Hi Guys, Just wanted to know: is it possible to give KDE's Kicker GNOME like functionality? To be specific: one thing I loved when I used GNOME was whenever I switched to a new desktop, the taskbar would be cleared, and whenever I switched back to the previous desktop, the taskbar would fill with whatever was running on that desktop. Hi neddie, I am very excited to tell you that my problem is resolved! What I did to get it to work: I changed my bashrc file to look like this: [NOTICE THE 3rd AND 4th LINES WHERE I DEFINE THE JAVA_HOME AND PATH] then I created a symlink in "usr/bin/" This i did by doing the following in Konsole cd /usr/bin/ this made /usr/bin as my active directory. From here, I created the symlink using the following command: ln -s /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_08/bin/java java And restarted my computer. All is well, i Created helloworld app, just to test everything and all worked good ;) Thank you very much for all your help, neddie!! :) -LR

hi neddie, i changed my bash files: ~/.bashrc ~/.bashrc~ files to have the following: bashrc bashrc~ ~/.bash_profile and ~/.bash_profile~ bash_profile bash_profile~ notice that i deleted the export lines from bashrc and bashrc~ files even after doing this, and running "eclipse" command in Konsole did not solve the problem. do my bash files (all four of them) look right? and do I have to reboot everytime i change my bash files? or just logging out (CTRL+ALT+BckSpace) will do? -LR

Hi neddie, when i do: which java java -version in the Konsole, i get the following: the file: "java" under /usr/bin is "Executable File (Link)" and it points to: /etc/alternatives/java in "/etc/alternatives/" folder, there is no folder named "java" there is however an "Executalbe File (Link), which points to: "/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-jamvm-1.4.2.0/jre/bin/java" this is very confusing. where to go from here, neddie? -LR

Hopefully, I can solve my problems, and help users along the way too! ok, now, your queries: Yes, I am sure it runs normally. here's the output when i typed java inside the Konsole: Don't know. Havent' tried any other app that I know uses Java... Give me an example, and I will execute that program and see if it runs. If you mean a directory, then yes you are right. "java" directory does not exist under /usr/bin. However, if you mean a file, then yes it does exist. please look at the screenshot below of my /usr/bin/ folder I have highlighed everything that said "java" Yes, there is no directory called "eclipse" under /usr/bin/ There is, however a Executable File (Link) that points to: /usr/share/eclipse/eclipse I am starting eclipse using the kmenu. When I look at the kmenu entry of eclipse i see this in the "COMMAND" entry: hence, i am starting eclipse with just "eclipse" and with no other parameters. Distro: I am using Mandriva Free 2007 Eclipse: Eclipse Version 3.2 Below is a screenshot that i took of rpmdrake. it shows everything installed for keyword "eclipse" And one more: Below is a screenshot of rpmdrake: it shows everything installed for keyword "java" Please let me know if more information is needed. Hi guys, I am trying to get my eclipse to run for the last three days, but it errors out no matter what I do. I searched through many sites, trying to see what solution might fix this. So far, not a single solution has worked, and I am posting here as my last resort. please help. this is the error it currently displays: Solutions I have tried: 1: I reinstalled eclipse, jdk, and jre, but to no avail! 2: I edited my bash files (look below), but to no avail!
