sitor
Hello, Quite some time ago (somewhere in october / november) I wrote a (dutch) article on what Mandriva Linux 2006 can be for normal home users. It is directed to people who have heard about linux and have some curiousity, but don't know really much about it. I finally came to it to translate it to english, and to create a website to publish it. You can find it here: http://coulier.org/CMS/MDV_2006_homeusers_1_EN.html. I used a creative commons license, so if you would like to translate, or use it for making another article or something, don't hesitate. Ciao, Sitor
arctic
Nice article. Thanks for sharing it. :)
neddie
Very good, and very thorough! You just need a link to mandrivausers.org at the end and it'll be great!
sitor
Thanks for the feedback. Indeed, I should add a link to Mandriva users. Will do that first time I make a new version. Any other hints for improvement are very welcome. Ciao, Sitor
Murda
It's getting some attention at Slashdot.org too. :P http://linux.slashdot.org/linux/06/05/08/0444206.shtml
devries
I just read the comments on Slashdot. More then half of the comments are from Ububtus users telling how much better Ubuntu is then Mandriva and the other half are complains about spelling errors. Slashdot isn´t what is used to be. arctic
The Ubuntuists are spreading everywhere their opinion that Blahbuntu is much better than anything else, even if the topic has nothing to do with Ubuntu or other Linuxes. I read e.g. once in some comments from the Ubuntucamp to an article about securing servers under OpenBSD that everyone would get even better results from their servers if they use Ubuntu ... Let them talk crap. Most of them have no clue about Linux systems as they just converted from Windows to Linux. At least, I don't give a dime on what the Ubuntucamp says. wilcal
The Ubuntuists are spreading everywhere their opinionthat Blahbuntu is much better than anything else, even if the topic has nothing to do with Ubuntu or other Linuxes. I'd like to comment on that. I agree that the "Ubuntuists" are in fact becoming a bit Elitist. But having said that is that a bad thing as it effects the Linux Community as a whole? I think we can all agree here that Ubuntu in its many forms is the leading Linux Distro. Good or bad, your choice or not, it's #1. I suggest that all the Linux Distros are positioning themselves for that time in the distant future when "Vista" hits the street. When that does all of us will be waiting for it to fall on its sword. And when it does there sits Ubuntu, the leading Linux Distro, just waiting to go bigtime. Let me make a wild prediction here. In the USA when you go through the check out lane in many grocery stores there's a rack of AOL CD's to grab for free, take home and give it a try. I'll go out on a limb here and predict that some form of Ubuntu and Google, sometimes called GoBuntu, will find its way into those checkout aisles. Ubuntu in marketing terms has gained "traction". Every day Vista is not available off the shelf Ubuntu gains a little more traction. Given enough time, traction, delays and a self impaling sword Ubuntu could become quite the thing in 07/08. arctic
I must correct you in one thing: Ubuntu is the number one distro at the distrowatch ranking, but that does not equal to being number one in the Linux world itself. There is more than enough evidence that other distros are used a lot more than Ubuntu. E.g. let's take a look at just the fedora and ubuntuforums (they are imho a better indicator of the real usage of distros). Fedoraforum: roughly 7000 active users per day Ubuntuforums: roughly 2000 active users per day
wilcal
Fedoraforum: roughly 7000 active users per dayUbuntuforums: roughly 2000 active users per day Now add a Google/Ubuntu mix in there and what do the numbers look like? It'll be an interesting battle.
tyme
what's google got to do with it? they aren't making a linux distro...despite what the rumour mills are saying.
arctic
Good question. If you are referring to hit entries in Google concerning the different distros, then you will get this: Ubuntu: 25.9 Mio. hits Fedora: 61.1 Mio. (and that is without Red Hat's 170 Mio. hits) Mandriva: 19.6 Mio. (+23.4 Mio. for Mandrake linux) Suse: 78 Mio. Gentoo: 34.6 Mio. Slackware: 26 Mio. Debian: 138 Mio. And those numbers don't tell a lot, just in case you think that you can interprete it someway. ;)
wakish
I think a good distro should not go everywhere shouting "I'm the best in town" like ubuntu is doing, perhaps?.. but instead should aim at providing the philosophy that "WE (Linux communities or distros) are the best in making great effort in providing what we are providing and in our common aim! (despite being different branches (distros), all distros come from the same root (linux kernel). Well, as some of you may know, i'm new to linux, but this is what i have understood from my point of view while integrating this wonderful linux community since some months now. If i made any mistake there, correct me and please don't be offended. Kind Regards!
