michaelcole
ok lets look in the syslog file.. /var/log/syslog see if there is anything about the mouse or serial ports there.. or when it fails do the tail -n50 again on this file.. I will keep looking for you..

jethro
By the way, is it possible that this error is caused by kdm? Is there a way to temporary use an alternative for kdm (but still using kde) so I can see if this is the cause of my error?
ianw1974
You can go into MCC (Configure Your Computer), system and display manager and change it from kdm to gdm, or xdm, whichever options are listed. Then reboot.

scarecrow
Are you really running devfsd on kernel 2.6.12? (probably left there when upgrading an older installation). You should disable it, and use udev exclusively. Edited May 5, 2006 by scarecrow

You should disable it, and use udev exclusively. I am not sure what you mean, I am not a very experienced user yet. Perhaps you can give me some more information including what devfsd is, how I can check whether I am running it and how I can change to udev.... ianw1974
Easy way to check: rpm -qa | grep devfsd if it's a fresh install of Mandrake 10.1 or higher, or LE2005 or 2006, you shouldn't have devfsd installed. Only if you upgrade from 10.0 or earlier.
jethro
Alright, rpm -qa | grep devfsd showed that I did not have devfsd installed. I tried looking for udev and that is installed: [root@dhcppc2 jethro]# rpm -qa | grep udev udev-068-34.1.20060mdk Scarecrow said this: Are you really running devfsd on kernel 2.6.12? jethro
I have tried playing around with some modules. While my usb is not crashed yet this command stops the USB: [root@dhcppc2 jethro]# modprobe -r usbhid This command makes it working again: [root@dhcppc2 jethro]# modprobe usbhid The funny thing is that once the USB is crashed, the first command does not work anymore. Does this mean anything?
ianw1974
I think when crashed, chances are the module isn't loaded, and hence why it cannot be removed, since the crash already removed it from memory. The second command might get it back again though, but not sure how serious the crash is/was.
jethro
I can run this command after a usb crash: [root@laptop jethro]# modprobe usbhid But it does not help, my usb ports still are not functioning. This is what lsmod then says: [root@laptop jethro]# lsmod | grep usb usbmouse 3808 0 usbhid 42528 0 usbcore 100476 5 usbmouse,usbhid,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd
