ianw1974
I haven't, tend to use Toshiba. I know this isn't the answer you're looking for. But, you could download the Mandriva Live CD image, which is Linux running from a CD. Then you can test before installing to see if it works. Another good one is the Knoppix Live CD. ianw1974
On your machine will be an asset tag. If you go to Dell's website in the support section, you can enter this, or choose the exact model type, which should then list the wireless drivers for your machine. There is every chance though they had more than one type installed, but worth a shot in case they only have one.

ianw1974
It looks like you have a Broadcomm wireless card but I don't know which model as it doesn't seem to show it. What models does it list for your laptop and broadcomm on Dell website?

luke9511
ok at the time of this post im on linux and connected through the eithernet port on my computer through my home network, now i got 2 things by my clock 1 is for the eithernet connection and the other is a orange ball with a X in it and it says network is down.please configure your network
ianw1974
The orange ball is something that Mandriva supply that you can pay them for automatic updates to your system. This however, isn't required, since you can update the system manually. I normally remove the option to start at boot and close this icon as it's not really required. Plus if your system is on all the time, you can configure a cron job to update your system each morning anyhow :P

What models does it list for your laptop and broadcomm on Dell website? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> got it,its a broadcom 802.11g wireless network adapter <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's what I thought a couple of days back :P Glad you're sorted, try ndiswrapper with this. Download the WinXP driver for the broadcomm card, then do a google for ndiswrapper, and follow their installation wiki. Works a treat. The only thing you might need to do, which depends on the chipset on the card, is check the interfaces using ifconfig. If your wireless doesn't show as wlan0, and shows as ath0, then you have an atheros chipset on this card. You will have to then edit /etc/modprobe.conf and make sure the alias wlan0 line says alias ath0 instead.
