  1. Maybe "modprobe 8139too" and adding the above module to your startup scripts.
  2. AFAIK ltmodem drivers are a 2.6.11 module right now, so no extras needed, correct me if I'm wrong... but of course the ltmodem driver does not support all Lucent/Agere winmodems.
  3. Same controller here, and the disk is (for udev systems) definitely /dev/sda. AFAIK 10.1 uses udev by default, and the controller is supported. Is GRUB installed on the ATA, or on the SATA HD?
  4. Fluxbox, XFCE(4) and KDE are for me the only desktops worth considering... it depends on the box oomph. For really lo-fi machines, Fluxbox is exhellent, but configuration must be done with your text editor (unless I miss some extraordinary config tool, like Whitebox (which oddly enough is usable for blackbox-only).
  5. It works fine, right out of the box... although I don't use it at all (I hate ad banners, paying for browsers, stolen serials and cluttered user UI's).
  6. Another annoyance of the FAT32 FS is the size limitation (four gigabytes per file, with the default clustersize). Captive NTFS does work, but it's obsolete, slower than a turtle, and the partition size is "limited" to 128G.
  7. Actually an NTFS read/write driver for Linux does exist, as does an ext3 read/write driver for windows (both made by Paragon GMBH). But they are commercial, and don't make any use of the FS recovery journal, so the only advantage over multiple FAT32 partitions is the number of partitions used and nothing more than that. IMHO this not a serious advantage for mainstream storage tasks, although they could prove being very useful for recovery tasks (which is clearly not the case in this thread).
  8. Amarok is an exhellent media jukebox. On some distros (Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Suse 9.3...) you'll need stuff out of unofficial repos for MP3 playback. Those packages are absolutely unsupported, and may or may not break things.
  9. Ubuntu doesn't create a root account by default (and it seems it's not wise to create one afterwards, either!), while the sudo password is the first user one.
  10. NeroLinux could be a nice crippo, but alas, GTK 1.2 ain't nice at all, as every schoolboy knows...
  11. I wouldn't do that. Extending a FAT32 partition over 32 GB equals to bucketloads of slack harddisk space and extremely poor performance- in fact mr. Gates has tuned Windows 2000 and XP to be able to create a FAT32 partition being 32 GB maximum. Of course you can create larger FAT32 partitions by other indirect means, but it ain't a good idea at all.
  12. I use either Azureus (superb, but resources hungry- if you can afford that, then OK, else...) or XBTT (you have to compile it yourself from source, plus that the Linux version works only as a daemon, so you must have Apache and PHP running to control the daemon via the PHP interface- anyway, many Linux users will just love this idea...). I don't really like any of the python based BT clones, or the initial BT.
  13. This a question for the VMWare forums. Here we deal with free software.
  14. Either get a package from ftp.mozilla.org and install it locally, or wait...
  15. I don't think the minimal boot image (including the 15MB boot.iso image) can read an NTFS partition!
  16. Winetools is pretty much close to the Crossover functionality- it's just unofficial, and supports different packages- but to my knowledge most packages that install to Crossover install to a fresh Wine (currently using 20050310) and vice versa. I run on the above wine version IE6 SP1, Photoshop 6, Visio 2000 and a few other heavyweights with fine results. I have also tried Crossover and really liked it's ease of use, but IMHO it had nothing substantial to offer on top of wine for the average Joe. The only landmark addon to a Linux dstro is VMware- the new ver. 5 is simply terrific, but alas, painfully expensive as well...
  17. Some PLF packages aren't signed- it's quite safe to just ignore the warning. Some others are of subpar quality, I wish you could ignore that one safely as well...
  18. http://www.kyz.uklinux.net/cabextract.php It must be also available as Mandy RPM either from PLF or Mandrakeclub.nl (it's mandatory to install the licenced Microsoft True Type fonts).
  19. It is possible, but you will need a commercial (not cheap) application like V-Com Partition Commander or Symantec Partition Magic, Or Acronis Disk director suite. Before resizing it's recommended to completely defragment the windows partition, including the MFT (if using NTFS filesystem).
  20. I won't argue it might be a GUI problem (I, for example, never activate the "composite" of my Nvidia FX 5200 video card as I have quite a few headaches after...), but please post your /home/user/.xmms/config file to see if something is odd (since it didn't work as root either, it shouldn't really be the case).
  21. Totem uses the xine engine (same as Kaffeine), nothing to do with xmms. I'm puzzled as XMMS works fine here, even with just the OSS output plugin and none else installed- both with an onboard Intel 81X and an Echo Mia stereo soundcard. Can you elaborate a little more and report the soundcard you are using? Any chance it is a recent Soundblaster?
  22. Udev is not terribly useful for the default Slack 2.4.X kernels (albeit usable). Vector Linux ( Slack clone) have made a script for migrating from 2.4.X to 2.6.X and udev, which to my poor knowledge works fairly decently.
  23. Do "lsmod" and see if the snd-pcm-oss emulation module is running. XMMS initializes by default the OSS output plugin. You can change that by setting your repos and getting alternative output plugins for xmms: urpmi xmms-alsa (or xmms-arts, or xmms-jack or whatever supported output plugin you prefer).
  24. 1. Does xmms run as root? 2. Does it run when you move or delete the /home/dual/.xmms/ directory? 3. If you were using OSS before as XMMS output, get sure the "libalsa-oss0" package is installed.
  25. This section is correct, so it must be a pure font problem. Do you load "mode1" and "freetype" in the Modules section of your xorg.conf? In the same section, try commenting the "glx" part in and out, and see if it makes a difference when you restart X (alt+ctrl+backspace).
