  1. I am a nub as well, tried almost everything out there before settling on Mandriva LE 2005 to learn Linux. I liked the following in order: 1. LE 2005 2. Kubuntu/Ubuntu 3. Fedora Core 3 4. Suse Have a look at this http://distrowatch.com/ to get an idea of what is out there, I recommend trying at least a half dozen distros to see what suits your style before settling on one to learn.
  2. Haha, I read in many many places that you have to get special apps, etc to play MP3's in linux that I posted this before I even tried. On a whim I tried today - without installing any of the above mentioned software and to my happy surprise in LE 2005 Kaffiene opened up and played my MP3's. Guess I was all set and didn't even know it, lol. Thanks guys = }
  3. I have been duel booting XP & LE 2005. I have: XP on hda1 - 60GB LE 2005 on hda2 - 40GB Fat32 20GB hda3 for shared access between the two OS. For reasons I don't need to get into I will be Reinstalling both XP and LE 2005. I install XP first on hda1, then LE 2005 on hda2. When installing LE 2005 it comes to the section of installing the Lilo bootloader. It gives various options, one of those being to install to a floppy. I assume that if I take this option and have the floppy in the drive at bootup it will give me the same screen as when it is installed to MBR. If I dont have the floppy in I also assume that my pc will boot dirrectly into XP. Do I have that correct?
  4. Maybe just a bad burn? Have you tried to reburn the iso on a new disc?
  5. Amarok does look good, I will give it a try - thx.
  6. If you have eliminated hardware, media and software as potential problems then the only issue left is with vmware. Try out the latest version to see if it works from here.
  7. I am a nub as well. I have XP on a 60GB drive and Mandriva LE 2005 on a second 13.5 GB drive. Installing Linux to my second hard drive was a breeze. See this. As it was so easy you should think about forking out $40 or so on the smallest drive you can get (40GB these days). The reason I say this is that you will end up loving Linux and wish you had more space to play around with. Linux also uses a partition for swap, which will eat into your 4.5GB of usable space. Other then that one of these others guys who knows what he is doing will no doubt help you out = }
  8. How do I play MP3's!
  9. I want to try out KDE 3.4 I found this page and am wondering: 1. Am I supposed to grab all of the .rpms and install then one at a time? 2. If the above is the correct answer is there a way to install them all at once? 3. Is there a .rpm package that has all of this included? i.e. a 200mb+ rpm 4. I am using LE2k5, are these the correct .rpms to install? If not, can I have a link to the correct ones? I did do a forum search on this topic but didn't see anything that answered my questions. As an fyi, don't ask why I want to install 3.4, yes 3.3 is running fine for me - I am just wanting to do and learn to do as much as I can with Linux. Thx! [moved from Everything Linux by spinynorman]
  10. Four thoughts: 1. Your burner is malfunctioning - hardware problem. 2. The s/w you are trying to burn the isos with is malfunctioning. Try a different app such as Nero. 3. You purchased a bad spindle of cdr's. 4. Try to burn a different iso then the ones you d/l, if it works fine then you can disregard 1-3. As a test for this try to burn DSL, is only 50MB http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html
  11. Cool, would like to install some of these - where do I put them?
  12. I did what you said and still no change. Here is what I did: Section "ServerFlags" #DontZap # disable <Crtl><Alt><BS> (server abort) #DontZoom # disable <Crtl><Alt><KP_+>/<KP_-> (resolution switching) Option "RandR" "on" AllowMouseOpenFail # allows the server to start up even if the mouse does not work EndSection Did I put it in the wrong spot?!?! Thanks for helping me out on this.
  13. Just plugged in my dig cam and to my surprise it was picked up right away and let me save my pics to disk. When I open the folder it shows a bunch of thumbnails, when I open a pic up it shows that pic but I dont see a button to advance to the next pic, do a slideshow etc as I am used to in XP. Is there an applicable app that will let me do that?
  14. Ok, thx adamw, there is nothing life changingly important that I want to install. I just want to muck around and learn to do as much "stuff" as I can with Linux. I use Acronis to image my drives before I change anything anyway so if something doesn't work out it only takes 8-9min to restore my image. Makes mistakes easy = }
  15. Glad you posted this. I have kde 3.3 - came with LE 2005 and want to install 3.4 as well. I found a few sites that have 50+ kde 3.4 files and had no idea which ones to install. Is there a .rpm package for 3.4 that does it all and is easy to install?
