  1. great ! .. so I don't have to check myself :P As far as PM 5 is concerned: if I play with DiskDrake I usually couldn't launch it any more, saying there was an error, I don't remember witch one. I fixed that letting a little place unaffected at the end of the disk. Generally it worked. To reply the question: Now exclusively DiskDrake. roland

    BITTORRENT

I've tried torrent for the first time friday to download 10.0 Beta2. Worked fine, very easy. Yeah it started slow then it gets faster and faster. Most of the download was at 160 Kbps, upload at 35 Kbps. Not the fastest download I've got but correct. I guess the speed depend on the number of people dowloading the same file at the same time. roland
  3. Hi - didn't you get the j2re rpm from sun ? if yes, try the one from this board: ftp://mandrake-forum.org/pub/Misc Its a more Mandrake specific installation. - the limewire .run installer need to be run on a X console. roland
  4. thanks gowator :) I've found that it's quite easy to have a detailed doc about one aspect but difficult to have an overall view on the whole stuff. I think you did it. I will have a deeper look and perhaps some more question ? For the e-mail server and web server thing I think I'll go one day. For the isp thing, no way :D Just I was thinking about what you wish and don't find: a isp that provide only the connection. Well if more and more people run Linux, perhaps more and more people may want to host there web and e-mail themselves too ? so more and more people are going to ask for such isp. Generally when more and more people want something but don't find it there is money to earn :P Btw something I don't understand: You said before don't want to go to free.fr because of some doubt about the e-mail and web hosting reliability. But if your web and e-mail are hosted on your own box, why care ? IFAIK, the free's connection is reliable. by roland
  5. Hello I have few knowledge about what's an isp and I would be interested to know some basis of what they usually do, how does it work, what can I do myself. I'm not too interested for now on technical detail but I wish to have a better understanding on how it works, who do what. I know ISP can provide 3 different thing: - name hosting, - connection, - disk space (web, e-mail) I know the disk space can be on my box. So what would I have to setup ? A smtp server I guess, - a e-mail (pop ?) server, (qmails ?, sendmail ?) - a web server (apache ?), - what else ? I know also that there is companies that are only registar like https://www.gandi.net/index.html.en what do they do ? In short, if I wanted to do there job myself what would I have to do ? Connection: same question than for registar. If I didn't had an isp and still wanted to be connected, in short, what would I have to do ? Then gowator said: can you or somebody else explain a little more ? I know it's not simple, I'm not going to start a new isp company myself, it's just to have a better understanding. thanks roland
  6. gowator: yes it looks interesting. that makes me think about an other post you made link As those post are a little OT, I think I'm going to open an other thread. Ok I'll name it "Internet: what can be done on my box ?" Also, for those who are bored, that can be fun too ? roland
  7. 100% of home user I know have 100% of of the software installed on there box illegally copied, except sometime the OS they got with the box or some games they had as gift. In poor countries it's even worse. I don't say its good, it's just a fact and I can't imagine them paying something like, I don't know $500 ?, for an Office. If they are really forced to, because of TCPA/Palladium, I'm sure that they are getting really motivated to switch to Linux at a time when Linux is going to be really useable even for Mr Joe. I think it's already the fastest growing market for Linux. The servers first, now it starting on the desktop. IBM, Novell and SUN are going on the desktop and this will add a lot of credibility to Linux. Conclusion: there is a lot of obvious reason to be optimistic. Just there is the TCPA thing. I'm not well aware of that. Does somebody know if it can prevent people from installing Linux and free sources software on a machine ? roland
  8. I'm not surprised :D I suppose one day I should try too if I want to be a linux guy too ;) So all you need is a registar and a connection. So what prevent you from firing W.. (no names) right now ? I have to find something on topic .. a yes: isn't advice people to have there own name on a independent registar like gandi so they can fire there isp easily if it's not correct with Linux a good thing ? roland
  9. gowator: My politic is: don't put all your eggs on the same basket. Name, connection and disk space (e-mail/web hosting) are 3 different things. The most important is the name as your can't change it easily. If your e-mails are hosted by your isp with your isp's name like gowator@wanadoo.fr, if you want to fire your isp you are on trouble. So better have your own name elsewhere with a redirection to where your e-mail/web are currently hosted. At work we chose https://www.gandi.net/index.html.en It's cheap, reliable and I think they are Linux friends. Then for the connection, free.fr is a good choice imho. For the disk space (web/e-mail hosting), like ARTee I had some doubt about free's reliability. At home I'm at free, to be fair, no problem since a while. At work we are there: http://www.digitaldaemon.com/index0.html That's a single person company, like a friend, based in the states. (so when I send a e-mail to you, my message cross the atlantics and come back, that's good to make Echelon crazy :D ) Very reliable. A tree felt on his house when there was a big storm recently there but the service kept going :o The only trouble is payment: he said "pay what you want, when you want". So I don't know how much and when :D by roland edit: on digitaldaemon site, if you are curious and click on Smartsoft, LCC you'll have a bad link. interesting :D but wrong. The real adress is smartsoft.us, _not_ smartsoft.cc last edit  from gandi's "who we are" page:
  10. :D :D I think I have the solution: install a wireless network, plug a lot of USB stuff, notably a junk USB2 Hd and go cooker. I'm sure you'll enjoy it ! roland
  11. That's the firewall (shorewall). Did you try to browse with the other machine (the client) ? It's possible it works even if you can't ping. A solution: !! it's for ML9.1 !! modify /etc/shorewall/policy like this: ############################################################################### #SOURCE DEST POLICY LOG LEVEL LIMIT:BURST masq net ACCEPT fw net ACCEPT #rv masq fw ACCEPT #<==== HERE fw masq ACCEPT #<==== and HERE #fin rv net all DROP info all all REJECT info ############################################################################### I'm not sure it's the most elegant solution but at least it works and I was told it's safe enough for the server, let the gateway empty. for the client, I'm not sure if it runs linux (with Win98 it's empty). try leaving it empty. If it does not work, try setting the IP address of the server. Btw: as you have run DrakeGw (ICS wizard) on the server, it installed a dhcp server on it. So you may set a static IP for the NIC of the server but let it as bootp/dhcp on the client. hope this help roland
  12. VeeDubb I've found your post about Network computer very interesting. TCPA/Palladium is part of this strategy. I think that if people were forced to pay for all the M$ stuff they have in there box, they will have 2 choice: - switch to Linux, - ... pay A lot are going to pay, but a lot are going to switch to Linux. M$ may earn even more money than now but it may lose its domination in the process. roland
  13. So there is two solutions I know: - create an Iso file from the cd with K3B for example, and do as if you are making a new CD from those files. K3B will give you the checksum. There must be other way but I don't know. - dowload the isos again. I'm still guessing you have a SAGEM FAST 800 USB modem and want to run a ML9.2 download edition as you didn't confirmed it  roland
  14. I you are making a transition from M$ Win, for sure, better _NOT_ start with a beta version: they are not stable, made for developers and testers and could be the best way to disgust you from Linux. Better start with a ML9.2 (!! carefull if you have a LG CD-ROM !!) or a ML9.1. roland
  15. Yes Wanadoo sucks. In france you may try this one http://adsl.free.fr/hd/description.html They support Linux .. almost as badly as M$ Win :D But it's cheap, if you are in the right place you have the TV B) and when it works it works (I pay for 512K, they gave me 1024K but it fact it runs at 1800+ K B) ) .. and it's where ARTEE's site is hosted so it can't be all bad ;) going OT there ... roland
  16. Hi, If it's annoying and works bad, better not switch to Linux: it's not ready yet for games and most people are not ready to switch as long as all Windows stuff come almost for free because of illegal copies. As grendal said, sending e-mail to ask for a linux version can't hurt. Also, the fact that the only serious company involved in linux game (Loki) went out of business is not a good example. So, if you have the money, don't forget to give to game developers/company. gmac: I think that having a server on Linux and using Open Office and a free browser (Mozilla) on M$ Win clients is already a lot. Controlling Office software and the Browser is one of the key of M$ control, probably even more than controlling the OS itself. Be patient ;) big guys are coming: IBM, Novell and Sun. roland
  17. :D :D Hey let me time to see your post ! Wow it's soon. I thought there was a Linux expo in Australia ?? may be not the same thing. Well I really like to go .. and meet you :) . But I don't think it will be possible :( I have a $100000 cnc machine to deliver before the 15/02, it's vital for my company and we are in a hurry :( by roland
  18. Witch version of Mandrake ? If those problems occurs during a clean install it looks like your disk are not good. A download problem or a burning problem. check the md5sum. for ML9.2 downloaded edition its: 40c8812dce7b9f8fb0a3b364af62b974 Mandrake92-cd1-inst.i586.iso e07fe7b1474eb3ba35cac3dfd479777e Mandrake92-cd2-ext.i586.iso 2b6ffc5957533c927f14197ec99a0372 Mandrake92-cd3-i18n.i586.iso roland
  19. Well at least you start with a "clean" system as far as your connection is concerned: nothing is installed. good. :P Redo exactly like I've said . Normally DrakConnect is going to install adiusbadsl rpm and ask you for the cd-rom. Btw which distro are you runing ? Please let us know how it goes by roland
  20. sorry: forgot to have a look on /etc/analog/adiusbadsl.conf at home. You confirm it's a Sagem Fast 800 USB modem ok ? I know it's detected by ML9.1, 9.2 and I guess 9.0. So just let DrakConnect do the job. From memory: - First clean everything: uninstall adiusbadsl rpm with RpmDrake, and also Shorewall, just in case, - Run DrakeConnect: - Run the Wizard, - check expert mode, next - there must be Sagem usb modem detected. check it if not already checked and UNcheck LAN, next, - give the informations; leave them empty if you have a doubt. Tiscaly uk DNS servers are: DNS1: 212.74.112.66 DNS2: 212.74.112.67 - check start internet at boot, ok, ok, until you are finish, no need to try to connect now. - Now, run an editor, root mode, - edit /etc/analog.adiusbadsl.conf, - set VPI to 0, - set VCI to 26 (=38 in hex), - set encapsulation to PPPoA VCmux (6 if I remember well: see the comments) !! carefull: let the leading 0s, set values without changing the format !! - save - now reboot. - once booting is finish (it can be long if your couldn't connect), open a Text terminal: Ctrl-Halt F1, - log as root, TRY: - try "ping google.com" without the quotes, - if it's ok .. its ok: finish ELSE: - unplug the usb, wait a few second, - replug the usb, - wait the 2 leds are on, not blinking, - run "service internet restart" without the quote, goto TRY if still not ok, run ifconfig -a and send us the result. for more info see: http://www.sagem.com/web-modems/download/s...1000-en.htm#800 and http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/broadband/ro...r_settings.html good luck roland
  21. "(btw, the eagle package still doesn't compile)" So I guess your modem is a Sagem FAST 800 USB modem ? I have one at home. Works with ML9.1 & ML9.2 setting (uses eth1), I didn't tried it with Sagem's drivers. There is two way of setting it with mcc on ML9.2: - Sagem modem using pppoa, - Sagem modem using dhcp. try both. My provider changed its setting, I was first pppoa then it became dhcp ( switched from 512K to 1024K+ for the same price B) ) When it became dhcp I had to change something on /etc/analog/adiusbadsl.conf Can't say exactly what now as I'm at work. More may be tonight. BTW: there must be something about your DNS on your ISP website. Just find it. BTW2: as tiscali is a big company, there also must be something on the Sagem website about the /etc/analog/adiusbadsl.conf setting. hope this help roland
  22. that means 8 Gb is enough ... /tmp or /var, that makes sense imo but /usr, that may complicate your life if you do a fresh install in the future. roland
  23. As your old /etc is still there it must not be too difficult. roland
  24. So better have a beer before the upgrade. So you'll be more concentrate and relax. By the way, why not having a beer during the upgrade ? it's more fun. Then, when it's finish and the job done and well done as usual, you can still have a beer to celebrate the new PHP. roland
  25. Hi, Having / and /home on the same partition is not a good idea imho. Mandrake does not upgrade well so far (as any other distro except debian AFAIK) So when you want to change your distro's version you have to do a clean install so erase the / partition. Then what about your data if your /home in in / ? erased. I can be wrong and be corrected but it seems to me that a 10 to 20 Gb partition will be enough for a while for /. So better install your new Hd as hda, install your old Hd as hd<else>, do a fresh install on hda with a 10-20 Go / partition, keep your /home on hd<else> for now. Once completed, if you want to move your /home on your new Hd (hda), better let DiskDrake do the job: create a /home partition on hda, DiskDrake will say that you already have a /home elsewhere and will propose to move it to the new place. That's the easiest way imho roland
