I hear that Smart Link PCI Modem work with Linux, also Lucent?Agere PCI Modems, Zoom makes the best modems SERIAL & PCI. I had a Cendyne External modem that I used till recently to access www through Linux, but one fine day it just got burnt. Now I bought this Diamond SupraExpress 56e External SERIAL Modem with whom I am having so much trouble beyond initial connection. This has a Conextant chip. Avoid every modem that has a Conextant chip inside for Linux.

Hi: Well what is CD ? Carrier Delay? StupidMode =1 is what is set in my wvdial Is it same as StupidMode =Yes. I also have a delay or sort set to 300sec. I tried Terminal based, it logs me in, assigns an IP address, a MTU 1528 and brings up logging on to network and times out pppd. I guess I have just increase the pppd timeout like 3 minutes or so.Let me see if I can do that and reply. Art

It does nothing more than that it says CONNECT 56000 and nothing much,Mozilla does not bring up any webpage. Usually, what happens is the Loggin on to Network comes up and the dialog minimizes to the taskbar. I have a Conextant chip on this External modem. I guess the port is set at boot up, as oxo3f [iRQ 4] ttyS1 0x02f[iRQ 3] ttyS0 i set at boot up for 16605A UART that is modem, I cannot find any other particluars about this device Diamond through Hard Drake. The funny thing is on my other computer I have a Zoom Conextant Chip based PCI HSF modem which works with teh Linuxant driver at 14.4 KBS. And not this external modem. I tried script based. with an example script from KPPP handbook, the problme is it comes up to Login: login AlanJ@uunet.net and then waits for my Password & nothing much. Will some one good workable script for Modem connection So I can try instead of PAP/CHAP? or an alternative to kppp, but I doubt it is becoz of kppp. May be Modem & not ISP. Thanks Art

No Change. I guess it may be something to do with the Modem Diamond External Serial SupraExpress 56e Pro modem. Let me contact manufacturer and lets what happens.

Steve Thanks much: I did try out the script adapted it to Diamond Supra 56e modem, Infact I have aUSR 5610 56k WinMODEM also on the computer whose IRQ is 5 and device ID is 12b9:1006. But, I cannot find Diamond Supra 56e SERIAL modem via lspci also in Harddrake this is not listed, but modem query does list the modem data, and it dials out. Should I be looking for info on Serial interface. I tried wvdial same case there also, the dialing stops after a while. I have to do CTRL-C to cut it out of the konsole. And I get this message encountered SIGNAL 2 attempting to exit gracefully. I am wondering how a Serial modem would be listed in lspci.? I am sure I will crack this one as well, This is how its been with me with tough things in the end they have always worked, Thanks for your help Art

This is all the information that there is even with debug on, Googling I found that lot of people have come across this problem with this particular Modem, It seems to work fine on WinXP has seven 8 LEDS, only LEDs that dont light up on Linux are SD & RD if this helps, I will try reading man pppd and see what I can do about this. I was trying to even use ndiswrapper just incase I can use WinXP drivers, I get a message stsating driver installed hardware installed, but never get to using those drivers even after doing ndiswrapper -m or modrprobe ndiswrapper. I really did not know that Modems would be a great hinderence in using Linux productively. The damn WinXP wont let me see Linux Partition unlike Linux seeing WinXP's. I am confident that I will get this modem working with Linux just have to keep working on this. Thanks for your help. Let me dig more info if of any use. Art

HI: i just bought this Diamond Supra 56e External SERIAL modem, it connects but does not complete connection, it logs off after some time with timedout pppd. What is the solution. Hi: The mixer is not there. In the system tray the Speaker Icon is crossed. When asked for details the message is that /dev/mixer does not exist, YOu Kernel might not have sound support. I tried as root, there are no files called /dev/dsp & /dev/mixer. In the intial boot up, I get ALSA initiated, setting up Mixer. /root/tmp/asound_tmp file/folder does not exist. I installed Mandrake on another computer, it does not have this problem, although Mandrake 10 community the CD player does nothing much more than ask me to buy that software. I had to install xmms from the DVD to get CD audio working. Knoppix Live CD plays the CD from my DVD writer. I guess problem must have started as I had this main board VIA audio and Digigram PLX82 Sound card. I removed Digigram PLX sound card, and only using on baord audio. Do you recommend that I install it all over again? Thanks Art
