  1. Debian has been running fine on my old Pentium II-based server box... Uptime is currently at 113 days... My friend in Toronto is running his website off of a Pentium 166 with 32MB of RAM with Debian on it, and it's been up for only 4 hours less than mine. If you need an easy installer, you could try that version released by Progeny with their Anaconda port. I'm gonna try it sometime, as it looks pretty neat... Never tried Arch, so I can't comment on that. Slackware is cool too, and swaret might be a good piece of software for updating it. Lots of choices... It's up to you. :)
  2. It's pretty neat that Progeny now has Sarge ISOs with Anaconda for download. I may have to give it a shot sometime, just to see if it works properly on my server... That's what stopped me from ever using Red Hat - Anaconda always locked up.
  3. Wow. This is awesome. I can't wait for it to get to the point where I can let my wife play Planescape Torment again. ;) I am NOT installing WineX or Windows just so she can play that crappy game.

    Devastation

That is, if you actually can stand playing the game...
  5. Okay, I started making an application in PHP and MySQL, and I must say, it's really sweet... Maybe it's not as easy as Access at first, but it does surely rock. PHPMyAdmin is nice too for setting up tables, users, etc. Here's a picture of what it looks like, although you can't tell too much from just one picture: http://aslan.no-ip.com/~dana/images/helpdeskapp.png
  6. Yeah, that's sorta what I meant, but in a better way towards Gnome... I like them both, don't get me wrong. I just don't like Qt's ugliness (sorry, but just look at it!) and I use only GTK apps anyhow. Now, the main reason I dug up this thread was to give a Gnome tip that I think someone complained about before (perhaps not in this thread). Desktop icon size. You can change it by opening up the File Management properties dialog and setting the default zoom level. You can change the font and size of the desktop font in the Font properties dialog. I wish they would have a single dialog called Desktop Options of something where you can set these and know clearly what they will do... I mean, when you see File Management Properties, that scream "File Manager - Nautilus" to me, not "Desktop icons!!!" You know?
  7. That's right, 2.2 doesn't have that feature. Didn't really bother me, but 2.4 that I'm using now has it, and I use it. Gnome goes about things in a different manner - let's do a little bit perfectly, and KDE does a lot half-assed. Well, that's my general opinion anyhow. :)
  8. So if I include a header in main.cpp, I don't need to include it in sprite.cpp even if sprite.cpp needs access to the stuff in the header file?
  9. Actually, thinking back on it, the actual reason that I decided to definately keep Gnome and not go back to OpenBox/idesk, was that I am able to drag pictures into Gimp from the desktop and file manager... Somthing I couldn't do with KDE last I tried. Yes, it was that impressive to me... That's one example of how things should just work. I know, Qt vs GTK2, but whatever. That's why I use Gnome. That and it's hot. :)
  10. Okay, now that winking smiley just looks dumb.
  11. I use Gnome because it looks more consistent, stuff just works properly and how you would expect it to work, it's not overly complex and redundant... I don't know... I just used to hate it, and used to swear by KDE, but now I just swear at KDE. ;) Well, not quite. Both are great, but I just like GTK2 stuff and therefore Gnome, better. Whatever floats your boat.
  12. GetTimeOfDay() or something like that? I don't know, I don't use delays unless I'm only testing things. I just use time-based movement and such things as that. And since I use SDL because I'm doing games, I have access to SDL_Delay(), which does sorta what sleep() does I think... Anyhow, cprogramming.com is a decent forum and stuff, IMHO. But I'd like to build on this one here... No reason why not to, right? :)
  13. Don't know how closely you can match it to Access/VBA, but I use OpenOffice.org as a frontend to a MySQL server. Works for me. Although I'm learning MySQL for PHP/MySQL web-based applications.
  14. Okay, have you ever looked at this? http://pgshopping.com/mdkxp/?c=ttrls/mdkkernel You would need to modify the commands to your needs, as it was written with an older version of Mandrake, and therefore different kernel names, but the actual proper steps are there. Now, if you want the actual config from the kernel you are running, it should be kept in /boot/. You can grab it from there or try a make oldconfig or something. Good luck.
  15. That might be a cool thing to put in the tips section of the board. Just my opinion.
  16. What Steve said, plus, you don't need the include in the main file if it's included in another file that is included... if you got that, yay, if not, don't worry about it and just do what Steve said. :)
  17. What, is Unreal Tournament free now?
  18. Yup. http://www.devilwhiskey.com/ At least it seems similar to Bard's Tale to me...
  19. Epic Interactive ported their titles Software Tycoon and Knights & Merchants to Linux, and Hyperion is back with Gorky17. LGP is publishing them all, and the beta applications have begun. Check out http://linuxgamepublishing.com/ for more info.
  20. I use irssi alot, and I'm constantly clearing my text buffers using the /c alias... I kept doing that on my bash terminals, and it wouldn't work, obviously, so... Here's what I did: Open a console. "su" to root. "nano /c" Type in "#!/bin/sh" and hit Enter. Then type in "clear" and hit CTRL+X, then Y (I think) to save the file. "chmod +x /c" Then you're laughing. Yeah, so no one here might benefit, but I figured, just in case, I'd post it anyhow.
  21. Wow. I am so psyched... The main thing that concerns me is the availability of Linux to everyone - I don't want to use SuSE; nor will other Debian users, Gentoo users, etc etc. We want to use our own distros, but what kind of cooperation will Novell/SuSE/IBM have with us now? Will they help the other distros? Will Novell really make any money on the desktop if they have competition from Debian, Mandrake, Gentoo, etc? You put it very well... The future just got a lot more interesting. And the only thing we can do is wait.
  22. That's probably the best policy. LG said they don't support Linux, so in my opinion, f*** 'em.
  23. A friend reports his GCE-8480B worked just fine.
