  1. I would but they had better pay me a whole lot.
  2. How about a link to their site in our 'web links' page? A little more traffic for them can't hurt. Maybe they can link back to us eventually. I for one would like to have a few Iraqies posting here. It might counter some of that French input we have here. :P
  3. You need root permisions. cron might be able to be set to shut it down at a predetermined time. But the shutdown command has a time option also.
  4. I'm sort of suspicious of this because the name was registered just days after the combat started by someone in california. He could be an Iraqi living there but I find no real connection to Bagdad university as of yet. Don't meen to rain on your parade but I would personally wait for a little more info before sending anything more than a few linux disks. Sorry just read all their posts and it looks real. Just real small. Their having trouble finding a university that is willing to have classes in linux. Don't blame them though. I'm sure its just a priority thing. Those of us in the US can't help as of yet since we are not allowed to send any computers or software. Legal stuff i'd rather not start discussing. For those who can send harware and disks they could probably use anything that still works.
  5. If the second disk was burned correctly you shouldn't have any problems. Check the download and the burned disk. The second disk is also bootable to an extent but boesn't have the installer that the first disk does. If everything fails just using the forst disk install a basic system then you can install all the other apps you want later.
  6. If you have an onboard vidio card turn it off in the bios. turn off plug and pry also.
  7. I beleive you can use the first Mandrake boot disk to do this in rescue mode.
  8. try to find the settings and driver that knoppix uses and use them for now. If the basic driver is the same then it should work.
  9. Actually i think that if Mandrake made the same claims as M$ does in its adds it could charge the same as M$. Mandrake would at least get closer to the claims. There are so many people out there that actually think price has something to do with quality. If you claim linux is free they look at it as something cheap and inferior. Put a big price on it, claim its better, claim it has more features, and then tell them they will need to invest in some new expensive hardware to run it. Heck if you seperated out the firewall, the server options and the games they would still like it at the same price. Then you could sell all the other parts to them. Hey only the best use the best and really when you want security for your desktop why use something you know has problems? Definately not for the comon user. They don't even have to see it to just KNOW they will like it. If lindows can make sales to the general populous then heck its only good for linux. The fact that it runs a little like windows and looks a little like it thats only because thats what everyone expects. We can't change what people expect without getting more linux out there. if it takes preconfiguring it and "dumbing it down" then it will have to be done. those who want a "pure" linux will always have that option. normal windows users just don't beleive half the claims of the linux comunity. Its not what they expect for free.
  10. I would use a third party partitoner/resizer I just don't trust Mandrake to correctly resize NTFS partitions yet. All you need do is make one large partiton for linux unformated and the Mandrake installer will find it and let you choose what to do with it.
  11. When using Nero use the 'Burn as Image' option. you don't need to make it bootable or anything like that. The ISO image that you then burn makes it bootable. The burn as image option skips all that stuff.
  12. Can you turn off the onboard card from the bios? If so try that.
  13. Yep! It then never touches your Xp boot loader(yes Xp has one). Just make sure you have your bios set to boot floppy>cdrom>HDD or floppy>hdd>cdrom Either way if the floppy is not in its just skipped and jumps to windows.
  14. When you install just have the boot loader written to a floppy instead of the MBR or anyplace else on the hard drive. Works perfect on a standard floppy. Thats exactly how I'm testing out 9.2. No need to worry about jamming the whole kernel onto a floppy. No need for any special formatting either. I accidentaly put mine on an old email txt file disk from windows and it still works.
  15. Your computer does support PnP or plug and pray so their should be a section or entry in the bios that lets you turn it off/on. It tends to screw with i/o settings if you don't. The first thing you should try is passing the command for over one gig of memory to the kernel. Don't remember which command that is and I know I should. 9.1 has difficaulty with this but it looks like 9.2 doesn't. Make sure everything exturnal to the computer is unplugged untill you get a running system. Just makes things easier. You might have trouble with the wire less but it shouldn't stop you from installing. The same with the winmodem. Ethernet cards are far better supported in linux so use that if you can. The vidio should be fine to install.
  16. Try running it with auto login. Just like the guy said unless you auto login you'll only be kicked down to run level 3.
  17. Exactly what trouble are you having? What are the error messages? How is the vidio acting? You should at least be able to get a simple vidio output. Have you turned off all plug and play setting in the bios? What are your systems specs?
  18. Unless you need the boot floppy because your system doesn't have a cdrom to boot from then I have found no real need for it. Just boot to the first disk in rescue mode. I use a lilo boot floppy only because I didn't feel like messing with my lilo configuration at the time.
  19. Mandate? What mandate? Never heard of it. No one called my house and told me not to use DVD's.
  20. I use a floppy to boot 9.2. But instead of trying to jam the whole kernel on it I just put lilo on it. Works perfectly. I figured if I needed the kernel to resque something then I would use the instation disk in resque mode.
  21. Have you installed or reinstalled the Nvidia drivers? Is one vidio onboard and not turned off in the bios?
  22. Have you checked with the ethernet card manufacturers web site? Your card might be running a little slow and there could be an updated driver for it.
  23. I do. But it was only to keep the gimp from stalling on me doing some really big files.
