  1. why I got those errors above (in bold format)?. I mounted thus 3 iso of mdvLE2005 on /mnt/iso/cd* so i wolud not be using thus faulty cdrom of mine to install additional applications. Anyway, even those error appeared, It still add those 3 iso as local source (cd1 2 3) then I am able to add additional applications from those source without error. I did not encountered those on 10.1 btw, I checked the md5sum of those iso on the local drive and all are ok. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  2. try to check the firewall (shorewall), make sure you allow those ports needed by smb4k to the interface for your LAN, or try to do it with your firewall turn off , just for checking
  3. try to #ifconfig chek the results, what are the remaining interface, or is there any?
  4. I suggest that you just have to try MDV2005, then apply all the answer in your security related previous post. Why I suggest mndv?, because its easier to install the distro itself and thus addin package thru urmpi. Well, after you become more familiar on it, then you can try thus distro that others said more stable but actually more complex to install.. (like debian, slackware or other nix like openBSD)

    Modem driver

i cant answer about your winmodem, but regarding the USR external modem, installing the default kernel of mandrake, i think can automatically detect it when you attach it to serial. you can check it when trying kppp (similar to DUN in windows) or thru hardDrake. note: attching to com1 = ttyS0 in linux com2 = ttyS1
  6. one basic way to secure your desktop when leaving it for a while Lock it.... or if it serves multi user, log-out on it and ofcourse, dont share your root password another thing, just learned it here (from other post), when you are trying ubuntu, the first user that you created can really act as root thru sudo, it can even assign password to root by just $sudo passwd root as long as you have that user password, so be careful
  7. well, that was why i said this because only as root that a user can install packages, but you are right though, that linux is more secure on a fundamental level, since most linux run gui desktop as a regular user
  8. what? anyway the way i did it was like this and now, it started to download the files under main_updates, does this command also will download other files aside from the main_updates?
  9. in MO, thereÅ› no secure OS in this planet that really exist, its how the user handle his OS, wether M$ windows or the *Nix like. Like for linux, it maybe secure from the virus when you install it, but if you dont check what services are running on it, there' s a chance that you will be exploited especially if your host is connected to internet its just bcoz most trojans and keyloggers were created for windows, so its up to you, even if you are using linux, you will become vulnerable on it if you will become careless on installing applications or packages intended in your OS.. so the same with M$ win, it is known that trojans and keyloggers were carried over emails if not from the applications you carelessly installed....if you or we are not carefull on opening emails that contains attachement that are known that could contain dangerous applications or scripts(.bat, .exe, .com, .cmd, .zip, .scr and others) then we are vulnerable on this kind of danger. So in linux, we should also always be carefull on installing packages, check what services are currently running then put a little network filtering or firewall and especially if connected to internet, make your authentication method secure... basically, have a secure password you may try shorewall, or others, see this topic the good thing is that they are free, unlike those u mention, though there are free version, but they have limited capabilities win4lin is still a linux. havent use it but since it is a linux, my answer in your number 1 question maybe will apply.
  10. got it Ramfree, thanks, I'm downloading recursively now
  11. is there a way that i can download all the files from a source ftp or http using wget? actually, i want to download all the files of 10.1 updates so I can bring it at home. How should I do this using a single command? Im confused of its man page, I want to use it because of its rate limit but dont exactly find the command to get multiple files. in advance [moved from Tips & Tricks by spinynorman]
  12. thanks really for all the reply, especially the sudo thing, you are all right about it, it was me that had been lost anyway, not my root passwd, did'nt realize that I should RTFM before installing it... thanks btw, I'm just trying it, and no plans to replace MDV
  13. i' d just tried installing ubunto, well, by just following some instructions, I able to finish the installation, though I got an error on the last part, but it still boot thru console... the error was maybe due to my crdom drive, anyway, I was able to login as user but.... I dont know what was happen, and I remember that I entered my common root password during the install but now, i cant login as root... i can login as user but trying su wont do also, it wont accept my root passwd... is there a way to bypass it,??? or maybe I should now reinstall it again. Im only able to go to cli, havent gone to X yet, when trying startx, there are some errors, but how could I fix that if I dont even able to login as root
  14. k, I'd just solved it, I put NETWORKING_IPV6=no on /etc/sysconfig/network
  15. maybe you should try to change the admin passwd at console #passwd admin if you have'nt done that yet
  16. anyone knows how can I disable permanently the interface sit0? I can dis-able it manually by ifconfig tool, but is there a way to remove it permanently? it just appear after installing LE2005 thanks in advance
  17. you want it to act as an anon proxy, are you not afraid that it may be used by others for their monkey business of whatever that could harm other and then your host will become the suspect.?.. well, just a thought that it could happen like that B) or maybe am just paranoid about it :P
  18. at console try $df if uwant to see a certain partition how much space it consumed, say the /usr try as root #du -hs /usr
  19. hi guys :P i just want to correct this, I found out that nero or whatever windows burning software should have no problem on the continue session feature of K3B, I just dont know why the heck it was happen to these sets of CDs here.. a lot of it does not work when trying to continue session on K3b ( here's the error "Could Not determine size of resulting image file"), but it does fine on those burning software on windows (nero and sony). Just yesterday, I found out that there are other sets of cd that only contains 30mb of data, so I tried to continue a session on it using K3b and it does work. I also tried a blank CD, put some data on it using Nero then continue session on k3b and it also works, so maybe the real problem here was those Cd I have here which I can only add files or continue session on Windows, but generally, k3b continue_multisession feature really works on those windows base burning software. :P
  20. yeah, if you really feel bored, try to install the easisest linux distro you know, then make it more complicated, put on it a webserver, mail server, then try to secure it, run php and mysql on it, it does not require that you are a programmer, as long as you have the manuals, then if you dont have a domain, try those no-ip or dyndns for you to have a domain, then put link of your webserver here so we can visit it :)

    Cxoffice vanishes

if you installed cxoffice as default install, as user, cd /opt/cxoffice/bin then $./cxsetup that should initialized the cxoffice
  22. at console try to issue command as root #mcc or #drakconf, that should open mandrake control center, but if that error still appears, maybe those package related to mcc were not installed, so try to #urpmi drakconf , if its not installed yet, urpmi will install it including other packages that depends on it, actually, it will prompt you
  23. do you really mean to run it as root? have u tried to run it as a regular user?
  24. you can leave it as default /var/www/html, or did you create a separate partition of your /var? if not, you can make a directory for your httpdoc in your /home, like, /home/www and make sure the owner of /home/www is apache
  25. try kuickshow #urpmi kuickshow
