Fluxbox is a lot better than blackbox, i really like it. You'll notice a big difference in perfomance if your used to using the rather bloated kde and gnome. I actually use Gnome though, simple, easy to use and not filled with useless apps. I do like KDE, but they fill it with so much stuff that i'll never use it's a shame there isn't a KDE-lite version. :P

How was i supposed to know it was running? I went to sleep last night with just xchat running (that i could see) loaded up opera and read this thread, i then closed opera and did what linux_learner told me to do. Please don't jump to silly assumptions. I'm not trying to prove anything here, opera starts faster for ME i didn't say it would for joe bloggs around the corner did i? I shouldn't need to explain myself to the likes of you, anyway.

I've been pissed off with firefox a lot lately, mainly because it's taking such a long time to start. So i downloaded Opera 8 and well although i don't like the ads (Which can be worked around *cough*) this has to be the quickest starting browser i've tried, i'm totally shocked firefox uses twice as much ram as opera does. I quite like Opera, i don't need all the fancy firefox extensions or anything all i want is a nice quick loading web browser where i can keep a few bookmarks and that's it. Opera seems to do the job pretty well, so i'm going to be using that for a while. I'm guessing a lot of you don't like it, but i'm still curious to see everyones opinion on it.

You just don't give up, do you? :P I already tested fedora, it's pretty decent but i couldn't get it do what i wanted since i was using the test release but oh my god it was so fast. Will try it again when fedora core 4 comes out. I'm confused about one thing, does fedora have an easy upgrade option? Like debians? I don't like to reinstall my system every 6 months. Maybe this would of been better in a pm. :mellow:

Well what i don't understand is why they overload live cd's? I mean come on, these things run slow enough as it is, do we really need the latest KDE/gnome and a bunch of useless apps on it? I'd like to see some live cd's with fluxbox or XFCE as the default window manager that would rock.

That's funny, the only one i haven't tried there is Gentoo (Because i can't install it T.T) Debian has came the closest to my needs, fedora would of been a good choice for me but it's lack of multimedia apps kills it for me.

Well that's weird because on my PC gnome is a hell of a lot faster, everything is simple and runs nice and smoothly. Hey, at least gnome doesn't have that horrible konqueror, i'd rather use IE than that. :lol:

I disagree, i wasn't happy with my laptop athlon xp 1250 and 256mb ram (Thank god i have a new one now). I suppose it depends what you use it for eh?

Yes, there is! Try out Azureus Great looking GUI and really easy to use. You need to download java though.

wow quite amazing how my thread asking for some advice, turns into a thread talking about macs.

Well i finally decided to install Debian unstable, and so far i love it. What i don't understand is why people choose Ubuntu over debian, when there isn't much difference. I always ran into problems installing certain packages in ubuntu, but they all work in debian weirdly, and i had some bug with firstarter in ubuntu too and yet it works fine in debian. I dunno but debian makes me feel as if i have more choice with my system. Hopefully gonna stick with this for a while, since i hear a Debian stable is coming out soon. I ran into a little problem, for some reason i can't increase my Screen Res past 800x600 any ideas?

I should never of attempted this, it's totally insane,i have no idea what to do. So it started off, i picked my partitions, installed the packages, kernel and the boot loader. I was honestly hoping it would just be as easy as rebooting and logging in, so it boots up and it hits me with some login screen? but of course it's the scary command line, i couldn't log in as any other user except root, so i'm logged in as root and i don't know what the heck im supposed to do now, i messed around with some stuff but no go. So what am i supposed to do next? If it involves editing a bunch of configs, you can forget it, arch aint for me then. (I know it sounds like im just moaning, but i'm just a bit pissed off that's all)

Thanks a lot! I'm going to try and install Arch, it sounds a really great distro and i'm currently printing out the install guide, just incase. If for some reason Arch goes wrong and i just can't install it, i may try out frugalware, but for now i'm downloading Arch and see if i get it up and running. B) I'll keep you updated. :)

So yeah, i've been pretty bored lately and i'm wanting to try something else. First i'll go through what i've tried so far. Mandrake - Was a great distro to start with, but got bored of it. Suse - HATED IT! Thought it was horrible. Ubuntu - Loved it! and i still do, but i'm getting bored of it. I've been messing around with linux for about a year now and i still consider myself a beginner, i wouldn't be able to install something like say Gentoo i'd be completely lost installing that. So i'm looking for something reasonable to install, i don't mind learning if it's a bit difficult but please nothing like Gentoo. x.x (or come over and install it for me *whistles*) I'm only 17 years old, so it's important to be desktopy i think you know what i mean, it must also have gnome support. I <3 you guys. :lol:
