    Services [solved]

    OK, thank you. This is what I have on. If you see anything else I can turn off, I would appreciate knowing. # chkconfig --list | grep :on acpid 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off alsa 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off anacron 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off atd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off crond 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off cups 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off dm 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:on 6:off haldaemon 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off keytable 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off kheader 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:off 5:on 6:off messagebus 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off network 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off network-up 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off numlock 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off partmon 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off portreserve 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off preload 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:on 6:off sound 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off syslog 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off udev-post 0:off 1:on 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off

    My fstab [solved]

Oops, I thought I explained myself well! Anyway, I was sure I had changed my cdrom settings in fstab because I was goofing around trying to get an audio CD working (and yes, I read the errata!). Aactually I was goofing around with MCC, changing different settings, etc. I thought I had it returned back to its original settings, but I wasn't sure. So anyway, I was finally able to open kwrite in root (after reading what Greg said in another post B) ) After saving a backup of my fstab, I deleted the cdrom line like Adam said. fstab now says the same thing it did before I deleted the line, so I guess I didn't mess it up. I just wanted to make sure it was written correctly after I was playing around with MCC. Thank you.
  3. I was having the same problem. # nano /etc/fstab bash: nano: command not found [root@localhost kieth]# kdesu kwrite bash: kdesu: command not found [root@localhost kieth]# kwrite /etc/fstab kdeinit4: preparing to launch /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/klauncher klauncher(18239) kdemain: No DBUS session-bus found. Check if you have started the DBUS server. kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting! Then I tried su - like Greg said, and it worked.
  4. I was just wondering which services I can turn off? I never add new hardware. Thanks. # chkconfig --list acpid 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off alsa 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off anacron 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off apmd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off atd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off avahi-daemon 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:off 5:on 6:off bpalogin 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off crond 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off cups 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off dm 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:on 6:off exim 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off haldaemon 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off hcfpci 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off hsf 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off ip6tables 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off iptables 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off irqbalance 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off keytable 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off kheader 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:off 5:on 6:off mandi 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off mdadm 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off messagebus 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off netconsole 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off netfs 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off network 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off network-auth 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off network-up 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off nfs-common 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off ntpd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off numlock 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off partmon 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off pcscd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off portmap 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off portreserve 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off pppoe 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off pptp 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off preload 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:on 6:off resolvconf 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off shorewall 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off slmodemd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off snmpd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off sound 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off sshd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off syslog 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off udev-post 0:off 1:on 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off wlan 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off [moved from Everything Linux by spinynorman]
  5. I was goofing around with my CD player seeing if I could get a CD playing, and changed my fstab settings. Yes I read the errata page, but this didn't stop me from trying!! :P Anyway, the change would only be to the cdrom player. Would you look at my fstab settings below and tell me what I need to do to make it the way it should be? Thanks! # Entry for /dev/sdb1 : UUID=74cd7cc9-901e-4a54-866b-e5b5e0675c15 / ext3 defaults 1 1 # Entry for /dev/sda5 : UUID=664a176f-fb80-4142-bf57-57ef5c8f0b56 /backup ext3 defaults 1 2 # Entry for /dev/sdb6 : UUID=30d7b7e5-995c-4dc0-b1b3-3603ff5dc60d /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom auto user,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro 0 0 # Entry for /dev/sda1 : UUID=AA90865F9086323D /media/hd ntfs-3g defaults 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 # Entry for /dev/sdb5 : UUID=612580d6-b99d-405c-a466-7be8eecf6efe swap swap defaults 0 0 [moved from Everything Linux by spinynorman]
  6. In fact, after reading the "Portal News", I opened up OO to see what version I had, since I was sure it was 3.0, and yep, it came with 2009.0!
  7. I found something about themes making OO crash. Maybe this is your problem. http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/for...f=16&t=2032 and http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=317077
  8. I had the same problem, but I was able to find the answer in the OpenOffice forums. For some reason, at this moment, I cannot access those forums, and obviously I cannot remember what I did. :woops: I do remember that it was something easy to take care of!
  9. The other day, whenever I tried to right click the application to try and add it to the task bar, it just opened the app, instead. There were no options (no menu by right clicking). Instead, I dragged and dropped it from the menu.
  10. I downloaded 2009.0 this morning and installed it this evening. Everything looks OK, and everything seems to be working fine, too. :D If I can download and install something without any great difficulties, anyone can!! I'm sure I will be writing questions as time goes on, as I learn the new KDE. BTW, this is the first time that I haven't had to enter Mandrivia via failsafe and re-do my video card. It worked the first time! Kieth
  11. During that time period with those "bad" Mandrake distros, that Adam mentioned, I couldn't even use them because they would not recognize my computer's hardware. For a short time I had to use SUSE (I believe - if I remember correctly). I couldn't wait to get back to Mandrake!
  12. AlRoss, don't loose heart. I'm just the opposite of a computer geek! I like "messing around" with my computer, checking, changing, adding, deleting, etc. I've messed things up so badly, so many times, I've lost count! My kids are now in college, and when we bought them a laptop, they wouldn't even let me touch them!!! They're right too!!!! Anyway, no matter how badly I messed up things, here with this board, everyone has always been very, very, very patient and helpful. I started using linux (Mandrake) years ago because I didn't like Windows98, and I've always received all the help I've needed here with this board. I dual boot, with 2 hard drives. I have one drive for only Mandriva. On the other, I have WindowsXP and my "backup" partition for linux. Just keep trying what the "guys" here tell you, and it will be OK. Our (you and I) biggest problem is that we are not that good with linux. I'm not that good because I just don't have the "head" for it. You, because you are just learning. But don't loose heart, you'll get it!
  13. Just out of curiosity, why did they give so many choices in the Software Management Gui? With some of them I understand, if you're looking for something very specific, but the others? All Meta Packages Packages with Gui All updates Security updates Bug fixes updates General updates Backports
  14. I was looking for a site to help me teach "American" English, and I came across the site listed below for Hebrew. Then I thought of this post. Have you already found what you were looking for? http://www.classicalhebrew.com/default.asp
  15. Ahhhh! You live and you learn! I didn't know.
  16. I've had the same problem. If I remember correctly, there are a couple of things you can do/try. 1) Click on the arrow in the top left hand corner. Then click on "resize". Then with the mouse, resize the window to fit the entire screen. or 2) Click on the arrow in the top left hand corner. Then click on "special window settings". Click on "geometry", then "size". There you can 'play around' with the settings to get the window to remain maximized.
  17. On your desktop, right click your mouse. Choose "configure desktop". Click on "display". The far right tab is "Power control". You can set up some things there, although I don't know if that is what you're looking for.
  18. There are always cds that you can buy. Before having a fast internet connection, I use to always get my cds from the news stand. You can also buy/order them from stores.
  19. I thought my problem of Firefox 3 crashing was fixed, but it crashed yesterday. It seems to do it when I push the back button a lot. Edit: Oh, another thing I forgot. I usually hit the back button, then start scrolling with my mouse before the page is completely loaded. While doing that, it crashes at times.
  20. OK, I'm running my system at DDR333 - 3. No crashes. Thanks much to all. Kieth

    Kmail

I've never used opera mail, so I do not know what it does with html mail. I do not use kmail because you cannot write in html. Instead, I use thunderbird. With it, you can leave it on (as I do) and it will check your mail whenever you want (mine is every 10 minutes). You can also write in html. Kieth I just found this on the internet at http://www.computerbob.com/guides/why_i_wo..._or_kontact.php , which changes some of what I stated above.
  22. Greg, I did not know what to expect when I changed ./mozilla to ./mozilla2. After I changed it, I immediately looked at terminal to see what happened. When I saw all the errors, I wrote my response here. I was expecting the errors not to be there. But you're right, FireFox has not crashed since I made the change, even if I get all the errors. Is there a file, cookie or something else that caused FireFox to crash? Thanks, Kieth
  23. Nope, that didn't work. Doing updates, who knows what I did. But anyway, I searched for others, but I didn't find any. Also, according to MCC, I only have firefox3 installed, along with the Italian interface and the lib files. Just out of curiosity, I cranked up the Opera browser, using terminal, and this is what I got. $ opera ERROR: ld.so: object 'libjvm.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
