  1. I know about top but I don't like it. It doesn't show all processes and it's not as good as GNOME monitor or KDE guard. But this doesn't answer my main questions: why did it happen and how can I prevent it ? (provided that I sleep during that time :P ). I'm sure I wasn't hacked or something becasue I'm behind Linux server and also have Firestarter running on my PC. And besides this, all the other people in my network don't know anything about hacking and stuff.
  2. The other night was crazy. I have no idea how it happened. I went to bed at 1:30 AM and before doing so I started aMule, checked that everything was ok and closed my monitor and speakers. I woke up at 7 AM. I was shocked to see (in gkrellm) that my cpu was being used at 100% :o aMule downloaded almost nothing (90 MB). The cpu temperature was pretty high estimated by me ( I don't know how high exactly because gkrellm says it can't find the mobo's temperature sensors so I put my hand near the cpu cooler). I don't know what shitty process was using such a huge amount of cpu power because I started GNOME monitor but it crashed. I immediately shut the PC down. My questions are: How the f*** did this happen ? What stupid process worked so bad ? Does anybody have a script that can prevent such stupid behavior in the future ? Yes I am very frustrated because it is the first time it has happened to me and .... it shouldn't have. I always leave my computer to download something during the night.
  3. Thx for the reply anna. I wonder why they won't implement the nrg format in K3b since it's quite popular.
  4. Oh, now I see. I thought MEPIS had something special. I have Knoppix and I'm downloading Mandrake move. I know they're very kewl. Knoppix saved the day when I screwed my Windauz, some time ago.
  5. I'm shocked. I tried to burn some nrg images but K3b says they are not cd images. I guarantee they are. Is there a way to work this around ?
  6. We need one of those Linux emulation Gurus here. Does anyone of you consider himself/herself to be one ?
  7. I think it's better to upgrade. I'm doing this right now. GNOME 2.8 has many features and bug-fixes and is faster. I'm using a Cooker repository and can update only the parts I want and need. edit; Devries Oh, I understand now, you are just inlove, with GNOME 2.8 .
  8. Nope. You pay for it once and it's yours. Linux software is not like Windows software with unknown 'features', spyware, adware and other crap. You know, some mother f***ers want to implement all sorts of sh!t in software using TCPA. Check it out here: http://www.againsttcpa.com/. Did you know that Search in WinXP is spying on you ? Yup, it contacts the evil empire and tells them what you are searching in your own computer. The point is that such a program, that would only run if you are subscribed, could only be created by M$.
  9. lool. bvc posted the same thing :P
  10. What's the thing with Mepis ?
  11. I've heard a little about this GarNome, but don't know exactly what it is. Is it a better version of GNOME 2.8 ? It doesn't say much about it on the GNOME site. Will I be able to keep my existing theme and icons ? Please tell me more about it.] edit; So they don't work with 10.0 ... and since I haven't managed to get the upgrade going .... I'll have to compile.
  12. Go to: System -> Configuration -> Packaging -> Install software and install Gnome System Tools. After this go to: System -> Configuration -> Networking -> Networking. There you can setup your hostname, domain name, windows networking, dns connections etc. It is very easy to use. Make sure you have Samba client and server installed in order to share files between Win98 and MDK Linux. Remember, both machines must be on the same workgroup. About the mp3 player, I suggest your install XMMS (it's the best IMO).
  13. Kewl ! I'm gonna download this one even if it means I'll have to compile like mad all night long. :P
  14. I never never played Counter-Strike but as I said before in other posts, Wine (or WineX) sucks. Get Cedega. It's far better than Wine, but not as good as I would want it to be. Go to www.transgaming.com and check the list of supported games. Register there for 3 months minimum and you can download Cedega.
  15. AI !! Well I know that was annoying at first. What I did was to delete all the toolbars and make my own where I wanted it. Then I costumized it and put everything I needed on it. First of all, right click on an existing bar (panel). A menu will appear. There you can create a new bar or delete the one you've just right-clicked. You can also add everything you want to the new bar from the Add to Panel menu. Remember ! if you want to delete something on the bar (menu button, shortcuts etc you first have to unlock that thing). Right click on the object and click unlock. Just play with the bars :D. That's what I did.

Sometimes it doesn't even work in Windows ! I never gave it much attention but I will try to fix it (with some help, of course :D )
  17. In an email, bvc also told me about the entry in Gconf but my current GNOME version is 2.4 and it doesn't work. So I have to upgrade to 2.6 and try it again. Thx for encouraging me. :D I thought that they were stupid questions because the problem seemed so simple but I couldn't find a solution ......
  18. I dunno much about making things work with Wine but all I can say to you is that Wine sucks. You'd better get Cedega or something else. I never managed to make Wine work so I switched to Cedega which is far better but not quite good, yet (it has some limitations). The thing is Cedega is not quite free software ... so you'll have to register for 3 months at www.transgaming.com to download it.

    Virtual hosts

I want to create ome virtual PCs in my LAN s. They need to "look" pretty real: respond to ping, appear in Samba4k (or other network browser) etc. Is this possible ? (using only my PC, of course) If so what program do you recommend me ?

    Xi-Gnome

Great work. I'm downloading it right now.
  21. THX for your suggestion. About the gnomemeeting ... I have no webcam or such.
  22. Sorry for the stupid questions but I can't figure out these myself. First of all, a shortcut, Gnomemeeting /dev/v4l/video0, keeps appearing on my desktop although I removed GNOME Meeting from my system. The second problem is that 2 icons, floppy and hd, always stay on the desktop. I can't move them nor delete them. The hd one is useless because there is nothing in there. Is this a result of supermount ? How do I get rid of them ? When I right click on the desktop, a menu appears, then I go to Disks and try to disable floppy and hd but it doesn't work.
  23. Evo89, there is a GUI configuration tool for Samba in the KDE Desktop. I don't remember how it is called. In my case, I had to install it by myself. Just start Rpmdrake and type Samba in the search field. Then look through the results. It is very easy to use you won't have problems with it. Another tool you can use for network settings is the Gnome System Tools (a collection of tools to manage Linux) after you install the GST go to System -> Configuration -> Networking -> Networking. There, you can setup your hostname, domain name, workgroup, enable windows networking, dns etc. About your ping problems .... make sure that your network card is setup well and check your setting and stuff. Can you connect to the Internet from MDK, because I had a similar problem: no network , no internet because of ACPI problems ?

    aMule trouble....

I made some more tests with FireStarter ... it appears the firewall isn't the problem. Then I tried to connect manually to selected servers and it somehow worked ..... aMule still keeps doing that stupid thing when trying to connect to the most popular servers :(

    aMule trouble....

Actually eMule has something to do with aMule: they use the same ports. :D No, I don't think there is a more detailed log .... But about the firewll.............. I use Firestarter. Could that be the problem ? I clicked the stop button and restarted aMule but there was no difference. The only thing I can think of is disabling the service ...
