If you think you can live without windows for a while, I would suggest getting rid of windwos for now - you can always re-install it if you can't get on with Linux. As Soulse says - you will learn more quickly if you have nothing else to fall back on. Plus I always reckon it's worth sticking with some thing for at least a week (ideally two) regardless of your initial impression. Of course - if you have work that you absolutely must be able to do over the next couple of weeks then you might want to reboot. Good luck

If I have a contents page in Open Office for a document (created in MS Word) how can I jump to a page listed in the contents? It's possible with the same doc in Word - can it be done in OO?

You don't need to do any special configuration - just mount your windows partition, which might look something like: mount -t ntfs /dev/hdc /mnt/windows Then just navigate to where on that drive the executable is and run it using wine - as you did with notepad

If it works just like tele west then it will simply be a case of registering the MAC address of your network card and then using dhcp to get your ip etc... I assume you are connecting to the modem via network cable as opposed to USB...?

I thought I remembered a discussion i nthis thread about how to speed up spamassassin... Still - can anyone help me figure out how to speed it up? I'm already using the daemon...

restarted the machine. So where can I find the kernel config option to enable the sys rq thing?
-
use the 2.6 kernel and load the appropriate module for your card with modprobe <module name> look on the alsa site for which module you need
-
nope - still doesn't work. I guess it's either disabled in my kernel (where would the option for that be in the config?) or my machine is too badly crashed. I'm guessign the former simply because I can still switch between virtual consoles - not that any other keys work to actually let me log into them mind you... Gonna have to hit the power switch...

:( didn't work - assuming I'm doing it right. first three at the same time and the rest one after the other?

I'm in the process of re-installing linux after replacing a dying hard drive. I've got as far as copying my old data into the new home partition and everything has hung... I used to think this happened because of my ATI card - but I've not even started X yet - I'm doing all this in mc My initial instinct is to hit the reset button - but I reckon this may be what killed my old drive and I remember in the old board docs that Tom wrote about a way to cleanly reboot with a key sequence - but I can't find it. Does anyone know where the docs are or how to force my machione to cleanly reboot?

Think I am going to get a new drive. I managed to bakc most of the important stuff up using knoppix so I'm going to try a reformat - but then it's off to buy a new drive. and jet2k5 - don't worry. I certain this is nothing to do with the distro I'm using - it really is a purely hardware problem. I think it was caused by my video card and a later version of xorg and fluxbox not getting on to well. Had a few system lockups and had to switch off - did it a few too many times I think...

hardware - my root partition (I hope it's only the one partition)is dying. I was hoping I could run some kind of disk checking/fixing utility...
-
My hard drive has gone on me - my system has become increadibly unstable - if I can even get it started! I suspect that it's beyond repair, but what would the command be to try and fix a reiserfs partition?

I found it very easy to set up and everything seems to work fine. My only issue is figuring out how to replace all the dockapps I had in flux...
-
yeah pretty much - and I've got things almost how I could like them. Trying to use gdekslets to make up for the weather and email apps that I had going in flux - not completely right just yet... Not sure whether I'll stick with xfce4 for the longer term, but I'll give it a couple of weeks so that I know I've given it a good shot...
-
OK - I've just started playing with xfce4 and I have a couple of questions: 1) is there a way to minimise everything in one go? 2) How can I access the root menu with apps open? 3) Is there something I can have in the panel which will show network activity? 4) Is there something I can have in the panel which will show when I have new mail on the server? (not just in a local mbox...) I guess that'll do for now :D

that's true - although the actual compiling may take a lot longer on an older PC -
What exactly do mean by XML support? Most browsers, for example, fully support XML Do you mean - what do I need to install to be able to work with XML in PHP? Or do you mean something else?
-
yeah - basically I want to take two photos of a face (different faces) and morph/merge them into one image of a face. If there isn't a way of actually morphing - is there a way of doing a cut/paste job? i.e. cut the eyes out of one image and place them on the other? I would have expected that to be fairly intuative but, either it's not or I'm thick!
-
Does anyone know how to merge two faces to create one new one with the gimp?

I reckon that, since the card is built in to the laptop, there is no need to move it. Just PM a mod if you disagree and would like it moved...
