  1. ok after trying this is what I got, # rpm -ivh --force fglrx_6_8_0-8.10.19-1.i386.rpm Preparing... ########################################### [100%] 1:fglrx_6_8_0 ########################################### [100%] FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.8.custom/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.ko): No such device FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.8.custom/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.ko): No such device sounds pretty serious, I'm new to mdk ... I was going to give that source rpm a try, but that gave me even more errors. Any Ideas? -Luis
  2. Ok well I'm off to try and give these drivers a try! I'll keep you posted wit the news! wish me luck !!! -Luis
  3. I've now come to believe that they do not support Mobility Cards, at least not ours. Mine is a Mobility M6 , but it also has a number lik 9200 I think, according to that post, my card would be supported, but I'm not tooooo sure. As far as trying them out go for it, because the worst thing that will happened is that X won't start anymore, which can quickly be fixed by running drakconf or what ever the command might be to pull up MCC in command line. Since I am sick right now, and I won't be going to school today :) , I think I will try to install those drivers... so I'll keep you posted and see how this might go :) -Luis
  4. There is also some post on this board that has A LOT of nice plugins for playing dvd's and vcd's. I'll get started looking for that right now and post back with the link. I have been able to play DVD's but not as great as I would on my Xbox or Windows :( VCD's I'm not going to say anything, I can only play 1 of 20 that I have, and it's not really being played, more or less looks like a slide show. -Luis EDIT: here is the link, click me
  5. true, but I'm trying to not hose my system, seems like it might need a lot of my time. With a new job, I don't have as much time to mess around with Linux, like fixing messed up apps and such. That's why I cam back to MDK and gave up using Arch. Thanks for the help. -Luis
  6. Hello all, Well now I'm back on mandrake, and one thing that I notice is that I still don't have any direct rendering. I have seen a lot of posts about MDK + ATI working together pretty good, and a lot of success stories about people getting that ATI drivers working. But for me it always comes down to this, do these drivers work with ATI Mobility M6 cards? Most of the time when I ask this no one knows, and then I'm stuck in the same spot.... Not trying the drivers out because I'm scared that I might screw something up. So if any of you got this working with a Mobility M6 or such card, please let me know so what I can give these drivers a try and I don't have to recompile my to get DR working :) thanks, -Luis
  7. Well I tried following that website, but I read it really fast and I didn't see that much stuff about USB. I hooked up my iPod through my USB port, and then followed the steps, and I get a bunch of errors. I'll get those errors as soon as I can, for right now I must get ready for my Job Orentation. -Jet2k5
  8. Good stuff, I installed WinXP just to format my mini iPod. It's been working great but iTunes has been very weird every since I updated it. It's been freezing up on my link crazy, right in the middle of transfers :\. When I get home today I am going to try it from Mdk 10.1 I already have gtkpod installed now it's the matter of hooking up my ipod. TO ALL OF YOU PEOPLE get an iPod lol, seriously these things can pack hours and hours and hours and hours and hours of music. And the control spin thing is ever cooler :) -Luis
  9. I totally agree that arch linux does have some what of a crappy community. When I spend time in their IRC channel and someone comes in to ask for help the first thing they say is RTFM [period] . And when someone says that they are somewhat of a Linux newbie they always, and i mean always say that arch isn't for new people. Which makes them look like ass***** because I'm still a Linux newbie and I installed arch and have it running almost perfect. I've heard of people stop using Arch just because of their community. Which I would too, but I don't give into things very easy. Altho windows does work. I mean when I used windows nothing was wrong, exept viruses and spam. Which was just about the only things that did not work for Windows. EVerything else worked fine, which is what is expected of the OS. If you want use windows.... I would if I needed it that bad. But I don't so I'm not going to install it, altho you should probably dual-boot, so that you have a taste of both.....
  10. Umm to make firefox the dault browser open up firefox, go to Prefrences and there should be somthing there about checking if firefox is the default browser.... you can check the box so that every time you start up firefox it asks you if you want it to be the default web browser . -Luis
  11. There is a post somewhere on this board about getting DRI working with a kernel compile, I actually might think it's in another board, click on the link that I have in my signature and check it out on the ILC board. If I can find the link I will send it to you, I have go to now -LUis
  12. Artic- You can change the menu bar ( I think ) umm and I use nautilis as my filemanager, and have the option to use Konq. I don't really mess around with config structure, I just add the icons straight to menu bar of what I use the most... which is just mainly like 5 programs ;)
  13. I've been using xfce4 for about a week or so!! Man I seriously love it I think it's very very cool. Two thumbs up for it! here is a screenie for Shoots and giggles, My Webpagehttp://www.home.earthlink.net/~jet2k5/images/xfce1.jpg Hope more people use it's really great, and very easy to install. Specially if you have those 3 installers which I used and are really cool! -Luis
  14. Yeah it did have to do with the kernel not having support for the filesystem. I ended up triying to use the Nitro sources, but I found them very hard to configure. So I went with the vanilla sources and used the .config file from my arch stock kernel. Everything went well, as you can see on my signature I'm rocking them, and I like them very much. I'm finally getting the best out of my computer....
  15. Hello, I think that I succesfully compiled my kernel in ArchLinux, but for some reason when I boot into it, it cannot bring up the root partition. This is the message I get, Kernel-Panic not syncin: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unkown-block (3,3) but the root line is the same as the kernel that I'm currently running right now, # # /etc/lilo.conf # boot=/dev/discs/disc0/disc # This line often fixes L40 errors on bootup # disk=/dev/discs/disc0/disc bios=0x80 default=Arch timeout=1000 lba32 prompt image=/boot/vmlinuz26 label=Arch root=/dev/discs/disc0/part3 read-only image=/boot/vanilla label=Pure root=/dev/discs/disc0/part3 #other=/dev/discs/disc0/part1 # label=dos #other=/dev/discs/disc0/part6 # label=Ubuntu # End of file As you can see the entries are the same exact thing, besides the name of the kernel and where the image is :P So does anyone have an Idea what can be going on? Someone said that maybe I didn't compile the option of " FileSystems " in the kernel menu?!? If so, where is this option? I have looked for it and can't find it. Thanks, -Luis
  16. You guys have some great looking desktops, specially you Al, keep it up d00ds Here's my xfce4 after 1 day of messing around with it, btw any of you guys interested in sending me a copy of that System info script? Screenie -Luis
  17. Hello, I've just downloaded and installed kde 3.3 and to me it seems like old, things aren't round or shinny enough Is my screen shot, the best way that I can show this " old " ness is the IM box and the buddy list. As you can see they look very very flat and just old. Is there a way to fix this? I have tried different types of themes etc, and nothing seems to fix it. Thanks, -Luis

    Starting FireFox 10

Hello, I know that Mandrake doesn't have the latest packages but I'am guessing that Mandrake is going for the " Stable " side. Anyhow I searched around in rpm.pbone.net and came across this, Click Me I don't know if that's the latest but I'm sure it's higher than the one found on your urpmi sources. If you decide to download the rpm all you will have to do is, ( make sure that you've installed the rpm from easy urpmi, by doing " urpmi mozilla-firefox " ) Do this in the directory that you've downloaded the RPM to I would just do it to /home/username just to find it much quicker, rpm -Uvh name-of-firefox.rpm Of course substitute " name-of-firefox.rpm " for the actual name of the RPM when you are in /home/username just type in " ls " without the parenthesis to get the name and usually just type in the first 3 letters of the rpm name and hit the <tab> key and it auto completes the file name for you......( great tip ) Hope this works...Enjoy, -Luis
  19. If you are going to install Ubuntu, install it last. For me I was dual-booting with ArchLinux and Windows and when I installed Ubuntu it detected both Arch Linux and Windows. And I think I had mandrake installed too and it also included it too, so my best guess if you want a bootloader that will automaticly write entries to grub to boot up other distros on the hard drive than I strongly suggest that you try Ubuntu last, worked for me. The only problem that I seem to have once in a while is that when Arch updates a kernel it requires me to re-run LILO, but when I do it over writes the grub bootloader, so usually I have to go back and install grub again...from he ubuntu cd. -Luis P.S. Ubuntu is a kick a$$ distro, I'm sure that your going to fall in deep love with it! Enjoy :P
  20. Hey I got a vote from bvc! heeh I use just about every single theme that he has ported out there. Either he does really like the screenie, or he just closed his eyes and picked a name out of a hat :P -Luis
  21. hehe did I mentioned I downloaded it for all the computers in my Admin Tech Class? Heheehe, I showed the teacher and she liked it much much better than IE. I've done some spreading .......... :P -Luis
  22. Cool some one said I had a good screenie, thanks...
  23. I agree it's a very very cool and much better IMO media player than xmms, even tho it's base of it it's much better. I would deff. give that a try and it's easy to download. Make sure you have your urpmi sources set up all you have to do is, urpmi beep-media-player And that's all, I hope you like it as much as I did! -Luis
  24. Hello and Welcome to the board :D I don't know much about your issue with the PCMCIA CDROM's but I do know some info on how to get your wireless up and running  I would refer to this topic that was made by LiquidZoo, http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=5494 This is a very well explain tut on how to get wireless up and running, hope this helps! Post back with any questions or problems.... -Luis
