  1. hi adrian and welcome aboard :) did you check your sound is not muted? open kmixer and take a look (it is usually muted by default). also try a different sound architecture, if you sound is not muted but you still can't hear a thing. for this, go to "configure my desktop" -> sound -> sound system, open the tab "hardware" and select either ALSA, OSS or Autodetect. (ALSA should usually work). good luck edit: if none of this works, please give us more info on your soundcard. looking in mandrake-control-center (configure my computer), hardware section you should find more info, e.g if you card is detected.
  2. okay, how about this aproach? 1. one kde-default desktop for the home user (more eye-candy or multimedia stuff, some other apps/links by default) and one kde-default for business (less eye candy, concentrates on productivity, not that much eye catching stuff)? at first startup of the kde-deskto, there could be a selection for the one or the other. right? 2. openoffice: i think there should be an icon, as seen in previous ion-desktop-screenie, which opens up a menu, showing all open office apps. it won't waste space and i am sure that a business desktop should offer all options of openoffice by default. 3. i am currently not at home but will post another new version of desktop soon, trying to create a good mandrake-galaxy wallpaper. 4. a link to this board next to the mandrakesoft links in the web-browser would be a good idea imho.
  3. in kde and fluxbox, i use firefox, in kde also konqueror at times. in gnome, epiphany. mailing: kontact and evolution. both are intuitive and nice to work with.
  4. does it happen with every desktop environment or only in e.g. gnome or kde or ...?
  5. very good idea. after installing the system, instead of simply asking "ya wanna have kde or gnome as default?", there should be a selection for type of box you will run as default. this can also save a lot of time for admins and home users alike. :)
  6. for a home-desktop, sure, this would be an acceptable way, but for a business, you usually want to make sure that every user has the same desktop to work with, because not every business has a desktop for every single user but sometimes shared users/desktops. so, think of e.g. a enlightnment dektop, set by one user as default and then the next user is used to e.g. gnome. what a mess! furthermore: in business, bosses surely don't want their workers to waste some time, playing on the desktop (although the custom desktop can increase productivity...but try to convince them... uh...) but stick with the same working environment. so, while the "custom desktop" idea is tempting, there should only be some (three or four?) alternative desktop layouts available in ONE desktop environment imho.
  7. maybe you made a wrong entry? like using pop3.blah.blah instead of pop.blah.blah or vice versa?
  8. - the ion desktop has some good ideas, although some stuff is unnecessary imo. why does the average user need a "my network" button (they didn't need it in windows although it is there)? the "my linux" folder is way too crowded. colors are nice and the idea of an open-office folder in the kicker is very good, reducing amount of icons for office in kicker and freeing space for e.g. multimedia or other stuff. - the tmp-folder should be hidden by default imo. - choice is great but sometimes confusing. but: in kde3.3 there is a theme-select otion in kcontrol. how about a link to it on the desktop, called "change desktop theme", suggesting some alternative mandrake-setups? ;) - we still need a different splash... and how about different sounds? they are not really nice, but trying to be cool and thus getting on peoples nerves. edit: concerning the stuff of mandrake vs. suse or fedora or... suse dektop is clean but just like linspire looks too much like a windows-xp clone to me with that kind of wallpaper. too bright colored, too many colors. fisher-price is back. well, it does look "good" for a private(home) desktop, but for an institution i would expect something less "childish". this is where fedora looks much better. very good overall coloring, but after some time, you get the feeling that it is too dark for a home-desktop. so, something between these extremes (suse/fedora) would be nice. imho.
  9. i use kwrite only if i want to write normal letters and the like. it works good for these "simple" tasks. but for my scientific documents, i prefer openoffice. it is more powerful and in a recent test in a well respected computermagazine, it beat all other free and commercial word-processing programs. :)
  10. i like the way you put all icons on top of the screen. good idea. but the wallpaper... well i get the idea... mandrake galaxy -> galaxy wallpaper. good start, but i think the wallpaper is too dominant. and there is still the problem of licensing... hm... maybe we find a wonderful "galaxy" wallpaper for this. the clock is a bit ugly in the digital version imho. i prefer the "plain look" as seen on my screenie above. and: we DEFINITELY need another splash-screen. the splash is so damn ugly.... how about a splash extra for root in shining bright, crystal-style red?
  11. try the following in both ifcfg-files: change your BOOTPROTO=none to BOOTPROTO=static any progress?
  12. the failing of eth0 on bootup is not dramatic, because it can be activated later vith ifup eth0. more important is now the networking stuff you have set up so far. please give the contents of your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file and the output of ifconfig eth0 in a terminal as root. otherwise it will be difficult to find a solution. ;)
  13. i also think it is a simple misspelling. but: which login-manager do you use? a nice graphical or an "ugly" text based one? if it is the "ugly" version, your gui might be deactivated. that can be restored at prompt as root, by typing XFdrake and then adjusting the graphic settings. :D
  14. errrm. nope. i had only the old woody installed on my box that didn't work with the new installer, that is: it was not available then (and it was only for one week on my box). i find debian too outdated. :P

    usb modem help

hi, bulio. :) hmmm.... very difficult task. i also searched the net, but it seems as if you need a networking card for this one. and you will need the pppoe packages. also read this: http://jshepher.dyndns.org/pppoe.html maybe it is useful. i searched dozens of sites and couldn find any driver, and it seems that you don't need a driver for that one. but... uh... dunno, maybe i am wrong. i wish you good luck anyway
  16. wow... well, it looks like a really "cool" crash that did destroy your font-archives. maybe that can be repaired with urpmi from prompt, but i believe there is even a lot more broken in your box.. so please give the complete output of the log-file.
  17. uhh.... is your eth0 recognized by the installer? if not, please give us a hint, what kernel you are running for this. also... if i were you, i would wait till sarge gets "rereleased". they are about to ship the next stable-debian version in some weeks as far as i know.
  18. good question... maybe they should, but the average user won't use it, i guess. this is also the reason why i eliminated the console button from the kicker. :D
  19. welcome aboard. riazmc errrm... is this your first mandrake distro? if yes: mandrake 10.1 is in testing phase (thus instable and full of bugs) and not released yet. the latest stable version is 10.0. what can be the cause of your problems are maybe the settings of your hd's. which one is set as slave, which as master? also, what information is put in your bios with regard to your hd's? also check the md5sum of your cd's. maybe you got a bad burn.
  20. i thought a lot about this, but i have come to the conclusion that your everyday work should not consist of updating your system. especially for a business desktop, i think it is important that these things should only be accessable to the administrator and not to the common user. placing it on the desktop would imho be irritating for most users. so, i think it should be left in a menu-entry where the admin has all his important tools grouped together. edit: adriano: this can also be done in kde without big effort. it can be an advantage but if business wants to have a working desktop, i think there should be as much space available for placing your apps on the desktop. the upper/lower taskbar does look nice, but wastes some precious space imho. the tmp folder will be recreated if hidden. thus you would have a /.tmp and a /tmp folder in /home.
  21. uh.. it looks like xandros? funny coincidence. i will try it with your color suggestion. and... the tmp folder ... i dunno, why it is there again... will have to check out if hiding the tmp folder automatically creates a new one.
  22. okay, here is an updated picture, trying to add your ideas/comments: http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?act=Att...ype=post&id=952 now, i have to say some stuff about it: 1. the nuvola icon set is almost complete, has 11 mb size and over 600 icons. there are only very few (and rarely used) icons missing and dave (www.icon-king.com) is working on the last icons for the 1.0 (final) release. now he is at 1.0 beta1. the icons in the browser are part of the theme, so there can't be done anything against this "childish-look", but they are nonetheless easily identified and that is important. big plus: there is a nuvola-theme for firefox available. :) 2. i added a help-button to the kicker. adding more icons would be an overkill imho. 3. i also set the desktop to .desktop, thus hiding it. it was unneccesary to show it in the home folder. 4. i realigned the icons on the desktop, thus matching the listing in the home-folder and the kicker-folder access. 5. changed style and windeco to plastic with 11 pts nimbus-sans font. i gave all alternatives a try, but plastic will do best of all those available. the color was changed to a brighter blue in order to give it some contrast to the background. other color suggestions? B) 6. made a new wallpaper that looks a bit more like a mixture of the mandrake 9 and mandrake 10 wallpapers. i hope this one is more to your liking. :D so, please add your comments. p.s.: developing this thing is real fun imo. :)
  23. you must have forgotten to save your settings. as you might see, there is under settings the file-management selection. go to it, then press f9 in order to set the tree on the left then you have to go to settings again and save the filemanagement profile. and you can further save the size of your window by right-clicking on top of the window, selecting advanced and then save window-settings.
  24. okay, here is a new preview-version testing nuvola icons and some of your suggestions. i do think this looks better now. i also added some additional folders to the /home folder and added a link to the different folders in the kicker. notice that the temp folder was hidden. i am still unhappy with the window decoration. the coloring of the mandrake theme is very difficult. most color combinations look dull, dark or too bright and i must say now, the best thing would be to use plastic or other decoration instead of the galaxy theme. sorry, but the coloring makes galaxy unusable. http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?act=Att...ype=post&id=951 what about the background? darker, lighter, other color, other picture? no picture at all? any suggestions? B)
