  1. Steve, formerly Omar Serenity, I remember the help you gave me with my Gateway system and its MoBo, the infamous Jabil. I did try 9 on that system and it was no go. Also RH 8 was no go. Good to see you back.
  2. I have no idea how or why, but after shutting down the winXP system and the Linux system, then restarting win and then Linux MCC sees my win shares and low and behold I can print. Still no idea why because yesterday I went through the same procedure.
  3. I had a similar problem with evolution and Texstar's rpms. Cooker's worked very well. I know one should be leary of cooker, but as far as evolution is concerned their rpms work nicely.
  4. I done messed up my nicely running 9 system and decided to reinstall 9. When that happened I could not set up my previously working remote printer (on a winXP system). Samba seems okay as I can print via smbclient and from my Win box I can see my Linux box. Curiously when I use Mandrake Control Center and go to mount points I shows all my systems except the Win XP box! But as I said I can contact it via smbclient -L alien(name of xp system). Then, when I try to add a printer via Control Center it says it can't find the printer. I am using the Cups and Samba out of the box, updating them does not help. I've had problems with Cups before on this network, but I have never not been able to have printerdrake see the printer or Control Center mount points to find the system. Thanks in advance for whatever help anyone can give.
  5. I would stay away from Red Carpet, it may be better now, but in the past it caused me all sorts of grief. I would suggest adding the cooker to your source list, via urpmi: urpmi.addmedia cooker ftp://ftp.ciril.fr/pub/linux/mandrake-dev...r/Mandrake/RPMS with synthesis.hdlist.cz With cooker updating evolution to 1.2.1 is simplly urpmi evolution. Mozilla is probably trickier because for 1.3 there are all sorts of other files, including XFree. I would image you should not be running in a X environment, but I'll let someone who knows more comment on that. As a rule having cooker as one of your media makes things much easier.
  6. works ok, but takes soo soo long to realize that the drives are empty.
  7. OpenOfffice, never had a problem with ms docs. Got my powerpack so Im messing with StarOffice, but it's no difference. I just do word processing and spreadsheets, no presentations. Used to use Wordperfect before Linux.
  8. had that libgal problem also with Texstar's rpms. urpmi with cooker worked fine.
  9. I had the same problem once and I too uninstalled OO and reinstalled with no improvement. It was after I had done a full mdk 9 installation. I reinstalled mdk and the problem went away. Could never figure out what happened to the menus. Hope reinstalling mdk 9 is not a troouble.
  10. One thing to be aware of is that Dell has a hibernation partition at the beginning of the HD, you will need to get rid of it, and if also dual booting Windows reinstall Windows without that partition. I have an Inspiron 4000 that works fine with Mdk 9 dual booted.
  11. after pre-ordering in Sept mine has finally shipped!!!
  12. Unfortunately you have to go to Windows (Fritz is great, Chessmaster has all sorts of nice board layouts and options, but the engine is not as good as Fritz), for Linux there is Xboard and Crafty, but it's plain vanilla board layout. Analysis features are not so great, actually rather lousy.
  13. After installing on my new hd (fresh 9.0 ) I have a wierd OO problem, no words with the taskbar menus. Where it should say File is a blank line, I can get the drop down menu by clicking there, but then too the items on the drop down have no labels. I still have OO on my other hd from the same disks and that works fine. Luckily for now I can mount my files on either system and so have a working OO, but I'm quite perplexed. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
  14. Figured it's a BIOS problem, fdisk actually shows a 9729 cylinder FAT32 partition, but also only says there are 4111 cylinders, so it can't create partitions beyond cyl 4111. Oh well, it's still a good deal ($50 for the hd + extra 256MB ram) and I guess I'll get the rest of the hd available when I upgrade my MB and processor within the next year. The alternative is upgrading my BIOS, but never having done that I'm a bit leary. Is it much of a process?
  15. I couldn't resist a new WD 75GB plus 256MB ram special at Best Buy. The plan is to move my linux from a dual boot hda of 15GB (with Win 98SE). Installed drive and formatted it as Fat32, checked it with fdisk and shows 9729 cylinders. Go to install another Mdk 9 on this drive, but when I get to partitioning it initially shows the full disk size, but won't partition beyond 32MB. Now, after installation (I have two Mdk 9's one on hda and the other on hdb both work fine) fdsisk only shows 4111 cylinders on hdb. should it not show the 4112-9729 as still being Fat32 or did diskdrake mess me up and if so how do I get access to the rest of this disk. Am thinking of playing with another distro on this disk. Thanks in advance.

  23. I have gone from 8.2 to 9.0 and have one big problem: I can no longer access my remote printer (HP usb printer). Was no problem in 8.1 and 8.2, but now I can't even see it, used MCC ans xsmbrowser. When setting it up with PrinterDrake it found the remote printer automatically and even thought it printed a test page. The problem seems to be Samba, I checked my smb.conf and it looks fine. Samba finds all my shared files, but not the shared usb printer! I'm running on, sorry, but anyone who can help please do so. Thanks in advance.

    Samba Mounts

There seems to be some problems with Samba and 9.0. Rickles has posted something about his problems and I also am having problems. I had no problem accessing my Windows boxes (2000, ME, and XP) from 8.2 (I don't let them access my Linux box), but cannot from 9.0. From ControlCenter Samba Mounts they are there, but I can't access their files. I am not using Shorewall (checked and it is not even installed). I am quite unsure what to do. My Samba config file is fine although I see that there is also a smb-winbind.conf file. Needless to say my printer, on the xP box) is not available. It's enough for me to go back to 8.2.
