  1. I wasn't advising to use 9.2. I was trying to say that I tried to install 10.1 on this old box with 64RAM - but I couldn't get it to install all (few weeks ago now, don't recall the details) - but the 9.2 installed straightway. It runs as fast as a dog with 3 legs into a gale wind, but it installed and runs nontheless - and with some tweaking, will probably get some increased [performance. Sorry for any confusion.
  2. I've acquired a second 64mbox sitting in a room not doing anything, so over the holidays, thinks i'll strip back some of the luxuries in mdk and see what I can achieve in terms of noticeable speed increase.
  3. I've a box with 64MB RAM - its OK with MDK9.2 but it will not entertain 10.1 (will not install) - is there really that much of a spec difference between the 2? The 9.2 runs OK - slow, annoyingley sometimes, so its now serving a useful function as a print server. A Machine at work is running 10CE on 128MB RAM and works just dandy.
  4. EDIT: doh! just seen your tiltle and reference to ubuntu so I deleted my txt. sorry will pay more attentuion next time
  5. Mandrakeonline is a subscription service - have you subscribed?
  6. 'Escape' only brings up the boot sequence! This is madness. Seems its an eMachines thing. I've spent hours googling, and not been able to locate anything which will help me identify the bios id string. And the eMachines web site is absolute pants. I found a download at one point which could id the bios string - but it was 4 winblows only. Not been able to find anything Linux wise. I'm totally googledwhacked
  7. Does anybody know how I can get to id the bios id string on an eMachines desktop (model 667). Typically, on boot up the Phoenix id string appears in the bottom left hand corner - not so on the eMachines - and then there's the stupid e splash screen which cannot be overidden. I want to perform a flash upgrade but need the id string. Cheers.
  8. It works exactly the same. :) As long as you have the boot record (Lilo) on the first sector your primary or Windoze drive. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> xcellent - think I'll give this a try sometime with a winbloze machine at work. Cheers.
  9. Nice one DragonMage I thought of doing this some time ago, but was advised by a friend that it probably wouldn't work, because 1 HDD would be primary drive and the other set as slave, this way the PC would *automatically* boot to the primary HDD. In my winbloze daze I once had a PC running 2 HDDs, I used the second purely for storage. So anyway,I left it at that, and happily dived in at the deep end and installed Mandrake as the sole OS - and have never looked back. However, just out of interest and curiosity (and the possibility that I'd be able to get away with this at work - and maybe at home I might install a 2nd to compare and constrast against another Linux flavour), how does the boot up process work - I know that on a dual boot with only 1 HDD, Mandrake gives a menu to boot into Linux or Windows (and defaults to Mandrake if no selection is made). How does it work with 2 separate HDDs? Cheers.

    Issue with Firefox

Well I can't help you with that. It all depends on what you want to use your machine for. What I would say is get to know the essentials first - i.e. urpmi, settings etc etc. and make sure its all tikityboo . Check this thread out here to help you on your way. And don't forget to check out this info rich site here. Do some searching across this BB and do some googling. When you need to - put up a post in the relevant board and you'll soon be on your way. Good luck.

    Issue with Firefox

Take a look at this post you should find it helpful. Go through it all :D .
  12. Have you not tried to use the 'new connection' and Internet connection sharing' wizards in MCC? Or are you unable to launch these wizards? If so,you'll be able to configure your connection within these.
  13. You'll be lucky. That modem has somewhat of a reputation - and not the best of ones IMO. You'll find plenty of posts in the BB. See the post by lets-eat gary in tips and tricks for installing the 330. Better still, if you're able, go for ethernet modem - noooo drivers :D and you'll be surfin within minutes. Good luck. :P

    URPMI updates

See the summary I put in earlier post here You'll be wise to also read thru the associated thread. Following this will update your 10.1CE to official. As Dustpuppy suggests, this may bork your system, but mine too has been OK.
  15. Hey aRTee. It really is just a minor thing i was pointing out. With the light, sky blue background, you hardly notice the background text, while the darker blues lift the background text - when there is some white font, say on your rhs/lhs panels with links, depending on where you scroll, it just looks a little 'busy' - the background text stands out more because of the darker blue framing. Look at the word 'preinstalled' and the blue line across the top page with the links, between 'install - configure.' Though honestly, these are really, really minor points. Don't mean to critical. Your site is the bizness.
  16. I use Netgear router (cable, not wireless) When I installed/configured my router, I don't even think it asked for the details of my service provider. It does ask though if you are PPPoA/E and some other basic info which yopu will have from your ISP.
  17. Hey Scotty, no worries, just helps if people know what they need to help out with :D As for your modem, I've no idea :P but others here might. As for the ethernet question, if you don't want to mess around with drivers then, yes, absolutely. But that is only IMO. And some people would rather dive in and get dirty. For me, migrating straight from M$ it was initially more important to get my set up working and conncted to the Net - I had a speedtouch which was a nightmare to work, it took forever, I did eventually get it 'to get going' but performance was markedly down, and it conflicted with the firewall as I recall. Basically it was a real nightmare over many weeks. I invested in an ethernet modem/router and it was up and running very quickly - once I'd read the hardware set up instructions and used MDK wizard (not difficult) I'm on PPPoA - no problems at all.
  18. Hey aRTee not had chance to read thru all the thread. A totally non teccy reply here. I think the new look is great, nice how it's all framed, the colours work well, nice fonts. The only reservation I have is now that the darker blues have been introduced, it does clash with background images - and when you scroll up/down, this becomes more noticeable when white text rests over the image. The image becomes more enhanced. On the old style, you know the background image is there, but it doesn't create that conflict. So,it might be worth bearing in mind when you change your images. Otherwise, the site still rocks yay!
  19. I think you will need to let the board know what kind of modem (make/model) - also search under these headings. If its the Speedtouch330 hehe, seriously though, you'll find tons of info - but check out Tips and Tricks on this board, and the post started by lets-eat-gary.
  20. What about that?? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Google it
  21. no suprise but nice to read anyway
  22. I would have thought biggest issue is lack of h/w resources? However , flash upgrade might be useful - still need more RAM MBs though I would think (I flashed bios on a not so old board because it wouldn't install mandrake at all - after the flash upgrade, all was well) I got mine from here it was pretty a straightforward process - the site also shows you how to ID your bios string without opening up the box.
  23. Might be worth a memory upgrade - stick or two of 32/64MB - maybe eBay might be worth looking at - never used it myself. Your PC manufacturer might be able to help - particulalrly if they collect old stuff for recycling purposes?
  24. I'm presuming then that you know of this do you know of this (don't know about your cloning question tho) The loverly speedtouch mine is now in a box on a shelf, retired :D and I went ethernet :D no drivers to stress about yay!
  25. Arctic is right - we tried damn small linux on a really old box at work, and whilst it was great that we got something otherwise redundant working, and from what I recall it took some effort to navigate/use. Not really what you would use to 'convert'. Slax/knoppix are Live cds you might want to consider - amongst others.
