  1. Hi all Is anyone of aware of a free or cheap software package that I can get me hands on, so that I can scan a document and then edit the document - i.e. instead of using a pen/typewriter to fill in forms, I want to scan the original form and then use my word processor for its completion (using OO.o or StarOffice). I've googled but without any real sucess. I know of this which is supposed to be good textbridge but its an M$ app and its expensive. Cheers.
  2. Is the speedtouch USB or does it also have ethernet - I understand some Speedtouches have both USB and ethernet. Some only have USB - can you get hold of a router that has a USB connection? It makes sense of course if its possible to go for the router option if you already have an accomodating modem ( or should that read vice versa?!). I use a Netgear - cable, not wireless; it routes, has built-in adsl modem - and firewall. Tad on the expensive side though - I bought it in a rush without too much consideration. But you can get alternative manufacturers at lower costs. Anyway, for reference, I use Netgear DG834 - and it works grand.
  3. or for a GUI method System>Configuration>Other>User Administration Highlight the user/Edit <or double click on highlighted user> From where you can select/unselect bioth account/password expiration etc. EDIT: Doh! Tired eyes Sorry, just realised, this is to amend user password, not root.
  4. I was a little disappointed this evening after buying a copy of Linux-Magazine, as it had a DVD including the archive of all previous issues (#1-49) in .pdf format. Imagine my suprise when I opened it and there was no DVD inside the box - I thought it had been nicked. I even looked in my rucksack just to see if it had fallen out. Anyway, after the initial suprise I looked at an empty box before noticing a bloody big yellow sticker which says the DVD was faulty, but if I went to www.linux-magazine.com/52DVD then all I need to do is provide my name and postal/email details and they will send me another. So, if you got your mag and thought the DVD was missing and missed the yellow sticker, you know where you can get your replacement ;)
  5. and don't forget to check out aRTee's web site awesome for newbies.

    ADSL

Is your ISP likely to provide you with support if you have USB/Linux? If so, you maight get instructions on installtion - but don't hold your breath. Do you know what your modem manufacturer/model is? As Dustpuppy suggests, if its a Speedtouch, follow his link. If its another make/model, do a search and see if that brings up anything and if your still outta luck, post your details. Getting a USB connection can be a real pain as can be vouched on this board by the many (you'll need to get hold of drivers); if you are able to, then go for ethernet - no driver installation, and a lot less hassle = speedier connection.
  7. AI your stuff is generally scary, but this avatar from corticalhomunculus its wrong, just wrong Welcome aboard the MUB corticalhomunculus (try saying that after a few )
  8. Go the Mandrake Control Centre (MCC)>Network & Internet> and launch the wizard. You'll need to input login details as provided by your ISP. Depending upon your make/model USB modem this may also need configuring before hand. You'll need to provide a little more system/problem details for anything more specific.

    networked muzik

Its certainly worth considering, especially if I can get a cheap enough s/h XBox. It would primarily be used for sharing music across the network and probably wouldn't be used for much else in the first instance (certainly not as a replacement box for typing etc). I've a friend who likes taking things to bits and rebuilding, so it might be something I can get some help with (though last time he nearly fried my modem when a USB port overloaded into a puff of smoke!). Its gonna be a few weeks yet anyway as I was initialy planning on saving to invest in something like the MP101 - but this XBox idea seems to be an option really worth considering - unless I can get something dedicated and way way cheaper.

    networked muzik

Well, its something to consider - and I just found a site with a walkthrough. Anyone else interested in this take can take a look here :P

    networked muzik

    X Box -> Linux I'll look into this :D
  12. Hi all I'm interested in networking a digital music player such as the Netgear MP101 as here. The idea being to burn my CD collection to a PC in one room, and listen through the good hifi in another - as well as being able to access muzik form the other networked machines. This model is compatible with my Netgear DG384 (cable router - not wireless), however, I've had it confirmed that the MP101 requires winbloze - but "may be able to find another media server to run under Mandrake, but this would not be supported, nor could we recommend any" - Netgear. So, I assume then that I would be able to get the MP101 hardware and install some other [linux] software? Anybody tried anything like this - I don't want to be doing anything majorly tecchy - I'd even be interested in looking at other hardware if anyone can vouch for such.
  13. If you access CUPS from MCC it should automatically detect printers on your network - I can't say I've come across it denying access etc this way. If you access CUPS throught the web browser, it will require root/root pswd as in my earlier post. Have you located those recent posts about SAMBA/CUPS here at MUB - I feel pretty confident they will be useful. They have been recent, only in last couple weeks or so. Try looking through the Networking forum - I think they should be there. I haven't used SAMBA so can't really advise otherwise - I've generally found CUPS to be pretty straight forward across linux - so it may be related to your SAMBA set up/permissions? Sorry I can't be any more helpful...hopefully somebody with SAMBA will guide you through. Good luck.
  14. Glad to hear it worked out :)
  15. Welcome to MUB After your username/pswd try typing 'startx' (without the apostrophe's).
  16. how can such people survive? how do they manage to open a can, make some coffee, how to use a spoon (and for what!?!) and how do they change clothes? oh my god.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Aye, t'is true...some people (I think to say 'most' is a bit over qualified really)just do not want to know , it's a kind of 'ignorance is bliss' outlook... almost a well why can't I just take it out of the box and use it immediately (even tho I never used one before) until something goes wrong and then the whole world and his dog is to blame. as for making coffee...try explaining the concept of only putting enough water in the kettle for what is actually needed...you get looks as if the world will burn (but they have no part to play in it )
  17. My partner and her daughter went *straight* from a winblows environment to Mandrake - and to be honest, they use it just as - Office applications, internet, email, music, games, blah de blah - just about everything the average user would use. Furthermore, work can be saved with M$Office compatibilty for use at work - brilliant. They have never ever (in 8+ months) been *stuck* using it - mdk 9.2/10 the only times we've had problems is when I play around on the network :P No need to worry about virus defence, spyware blah de blah. Turn it on, use it, turn it off. OK, I do the updating, only because I 'have to' - so I've suggested they get mandrakeonline for auto security updating - much the same way it would happen when running winblows with AV/Firewall etc. Heck, I've even got my partner to download iso's/burn em - and she thought it was a treat cos her hardware could and mine wouldn't! Whats more amenable is the cost we've saved - 4 PCs (networked), to be legal on M$ would cost a stack. Plus, we don't have the security issues running 98/XP etc - more of a bonus. I use these forums cos I wanna learn and develop - my partner just want to use the darn thing - which she does, with relative ease. But look in comparison to some winblows users I know. I work in a samll office. I'm not the IT guy - in fact I never really took any kind of interest in IT stuff at all, until I started using MDK. But just because i didn't take an interest didn't mean to say I was hopeless, not at all. I learnt because I had to to (say to use an application) or because its a darn site easier learning the fundamentals than having too continually ring round mates to do this, that or the other - or worse, pay silly money to some PC World 'expert' to put a plug, wire or a screw in somewhere! So I'm now the unofficial IT guy at the office - winblows XP networked - confidential data in some files. I say, "as this PC acts as the network server, don't let it be used as a desktop" - so its always used as a desktop. I then create 2 users - 1 admin 1 general user. I say " don't use admin unless you really need to. Don't let anyone else use admin at all. If the admin account is used, always log out for security" - how many times have I looked at the box to find someones been downloading s**te on the admin account - and leaving it open for all and sundry. I'm asked virtually everyday - how do you do this that and the other - even though I've told them how to do this that and the other a half dozen times before. And I'm talking simple stuff like how/where to save stuff, send to print to a particular printer, put an attachment in an email, restart the bloody network - that kind of stuff. And I know people who have problems understanding the concept of installing drivers for a winblows environement - even though its clickity click stuff. Worse still. My boss has recently invested in at least 3 or 4 spanking Dells and a Lappy for public use in the training room that is hired. I say, he needs virus defence/firewalls all round - how many has he bought - zip, in about 4 months or so *(hey the dells come with 30 days of protection :o !!) He knows I've dual booted my desktop with Mandrake. I've tried convincing him of the benefits, but will he listen, nah! What I'm getting at here, is its all about peoples attitudes. You can be put in front of something a little alien and just get on with it, learn it and use it. I've offered to put M$ back on my partners machine, but she won't have any of it now. Or, you can be given a brand new shiny PC running XP and you can just be totally ignorant in its use and security - then one day you'll be bitten badly on the arse but by then it'll be too late. If Mandrake can develop something like Mandrake online (for a lot less the cost of AV software) - click click updates done, then surely something in a similar vein could be developed for urpmi/MCC - get over that and whats the major problem (other than gaming)? Pre installed yes of course, marketing - badly needed, get it to work on a number of modems (speedtouch hell comes to mind here) and away you can go - plug and play.
  18. Hope you find it useful and glad to hear your gonna give 10.1 a whirl
  19. Hi ickith Welcome to the MUB. I think an excellent start for you would be to check out aRTee's web site mandraketips4free - it will explain so much for you, as well as guiding you through the install process. Its a great resource - one of the best. I wouldn't go for 10.2 - this is beta version and will be buggy. Try 10.0 or 10.1 instead. You'll be able to dual boot no problem, the Mandrake install will take care of all the partitioning. Just remember that you'll need to first back all your important data up, and before installing you'll need to defrag your drive. I have a dual boot alongside XP on my work computa - what you'll find is that when you boot up, you'll be given a menu screen to select your preffered OS - if after about 8 seconds you don't make a selection, it defaults to Mandrake. Good luck.
  20. If the icons have been replaced with the little blue folder, it sounds similar to the 9.2 problem. This can be recovered (well, it can in 9.2 anyway). I'm not saying this will work in 10.1. I'm not sure it will return missing apps though. If you do it, make sure you back all your data up first. --- 1) Reboot, at lilo prompt press ESC key 2) at the new screen type 'linux 3' (without the ' ' ) 3)su>root 4)type: update-menus -v (after a while this may appear to hang, just press enter key for it to continue) 5)exit from su 6)enter username & pswd 7)again, type: update-menus -v (and as per above) 8)exit 9)type: startx (and just to be doubly sure, MCC>bugfix/security update) This should at least return your application icons (well, as I say, it works for 9.2). It might be worth hanging fire and seeing if you get any other suggestions.
  21. What version of Mandrake are you using? When you say things are gone - what do you mean (i.e have they been replaced with another icon, or gone altogether?) On mdk9.2 there is a bug which when you install, replaces menu icons - this can be recovered. A couple weeks ago using mdk10.1, I ran an update and lost a number of apps (firefox/thunderbird/staroffice 7)/email settings/bookmarks/work - never been able to recover any of them. Back using an old box with 9.2 at the mo.
  22. I've posted this as I've recently pointed to the FAQ a couple of times or so. I've also included a link the TWiki page regarding EasyUrpmi which is quite comprehensive. As a thought, perhaps the EasyUrpmi page here at MUB could provide a link to the FAQ page so that first time users will have navigational, detailed information to hand re:its use? --- To set up your sources use Easy URPMI > URPMI installs and removes packages and takes care of dependencies too. Here are a couple of sites worth looking at to help your way around using EasyURPMI From the MUB FAQ here whilst you are at FAQ - why not have a look around. And the Mandrake TWiki has a comprehensive page which can be found here [moved from Installing Mandrake by spinynorman]
  23. Hey Banjo Easy Urpmi FAQ here at MUB Also, checkout aRTee's site for using urpmi and relevant links Remember, Easy Urpmi link is also available at the top of the MUB pages But I guess this is now straying sorry all. EDIT: TWiki has a site called "All You Ever Wanted to Know About Urpmi But Never Dared Asking Before" which can be found here
  24. You'll need to set up CUPS for your printing sharing - this can be done through the MCC or by an internal web based interface at http://localhost:631/ When trying to do some admin stuff here, you'll be prompted for u-name/pswd at username type: root password: <root password here> Look here http://www.cups.org/ for documentation re:SAMBA/CUPS there was some at documentation>faq but I think it may have been moved around? There have been some recent posts here at MUB about XP/MDK > SAMBA/CUPS search around this board for the posts/solutions. CUPS set up is fairly straightforward, though I don't know about sharing across SAMBA as I don't use M$ anymore :D
  25. This seems 'similar' to an ongoing issue I have with 10.1 (I've reverted to an old box running 9.2 at the mo ) Whats the process to 'redo all KDE settings'? I wanna give this a try - nothing much more to lose at the moment. EDIT: by 'redo KDE settings' do you mean uninstalling and then reinstalling
