  1. Hi ChrisM, I gave CUPS a try and now I am getting messages that say either cannot connect or access denied so I think I have some type of security problem perhaps. Thanks for your reply!
  2. Hi Everyone, I am trying to set up a printer locally attached to a PC running Mandrake to be accessible to a laptop running Windows 2000 and a desktop running XP Pro. I have installed the printer and an I am able to local print. I "believe" I have shared the printer via SAMBA. The 2000 system was able to see the printer and I set it up without any errors. When I try to print a test, at text file from Notepad, I select the printer, click print and get an error message (on the Windows system) stating, "A StartDocPrinter call was not issued." Google found several instances of this problem but I was unable to find a solution. Haven't tried with the XP box yet... Any suggestions as to where the problem might be?
  3. Well after checking all cables and reseating still no happyness so I installed another controller and put the cdrom on it by itself and it worked. Guess Mandrake didn't like it being on the same cable as the harddrive even though it installed fine. bla Oh well it works fine now - on to getting it so see the other computers on my network and visa versa...
  4. Thanks everyone! The su / mcc option worked great! Appreciate the help. Hi Phoenix - I have been reading the FAQ you mentioned just couldn't find out how to login as anything other than a user. Probably my bad but I am trying. Guess it is just not basic enough for me using "su" to login in as root is not exactly intitutive for me (nor was the concept of being logged in as two people at once, ie user and root) although now I guess it stands for Super User or something, the light went on! LOL. Anyway, on to trying to figure out how to get that box to show up on my network! Thanks again everyone.
  5. Chris Z, Thanks for the reply. What you suggested is exactly what I did to get the icon on the desktop, sorry if I was clear. When I double click the Icon it attempts to mount then just locks up the system until I open the cdrom drawer. (I can't Cancel because the cursor is dead at this point.) The media is good - I have used several CD's (data and music) including the disk I installed mandrake from. I checked and I do have magicdev installed, but I also attempted your suggestion to right click and "mount" same response. It opens a window tries to mount the locks up.
  6. Yes, they were enabled. No change But thanks for the suggestion.
  7. I noticed that when I installed Mandrake 10 an Icon didn't show up on my KDE desktop. I found in this forum how to add it but no joy - it doesn't seem to work. I am fairly sure the drive itself is good - I just installed Mandrake with it. When I click on the icon dialog box pops up, the drive starts spining and then everything locks up. If I just physcially open the drive, I get back control of the system. The media should also be good as I tried it with the Mandrake software I installed. I saw a post that said to check /etc/fstab and /mnt - not that I know what I am looking for... fstab shows: /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 /dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2 /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 /mnt has two empty folders: cdrom and floppy Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
  8. Yep, total noob... Installed Mandrake 10 got everything working OK (Well I do get an an eth0 error on boot up but it works OK and from searching this forum sounds normal.) I wanted to install some additional software but it won't because I am not logged in as root and I can't figure out how to do that. When I reboot the only option seems to be to login as the user I created. I have tried in a console via, it seems to work but when I go back to KDE it doesn't recognize it. So, how do I login as root and then get to KDE? Thanks and sorry for such a basic question. (I did try to search on "login" but the forum gave me a keyword error.)
  9. OK SoulSe I have seen a couple of mentions of fluxbox so I think I will give it a try. Edit: OK now I'm confused (again!). There seems to be several versions i.e. Debian, NetBSD Slackware etc - which one do I get or does it matter? Once I get the correct version - how do I envoke it instead of KDE? Is there a way to just end KDE and run fluxbox and/or switch between them? So many questions... Thanks for everyones help!
  10. Good advice Sapphiron - I will make sure to check before I purchase.
  11. Thanks xbob - worked like a champ. What characters can you use as variables i.e. like * & ? in DOS when searching? Is there some FAQ you would recommend for someone that is familiar with DOS/Windows that is trying out Linux? Stuff like using F3 to repeat text etc? Tells what type of files are executable, ie .com .exe .bat in dos etc? All the little stuff people need to know... Thanks again
  12. Yikes feralertx & permittivity2, I guess we are now the 400 Club – wasn’t there some religious cult named that… Oh well… I was rummaging around and actually found another stick of PC 100 ram so now I have a whopping 96 Meg! Of course now I am out of slots LOL. It really made a very noticeable difference. I have a friend that might have three sticks with 64 meg each so I might be able to TRIPPLE my RAM whoopee! If that works well I might have to spring for some denser chips – at least the price of RAM is coming down some. It is a bit of a steep learning curve for me. Like I will install a program then have to search all over to even try to find where it installed and what the executable (is that the right term?) is to run it. Oh well, it is fun anyway! The amount of free proggy's available and the quality of them is just awesome - sourceforge is my friend Now I just need to figure out what I really want to do with this thing LOL Thanks guys!
  13. Hi all - Total Noob here... I have an old PII 400 with 64M RAM. I have been able to install Mandrake 10 and all of my hardware works. I was also able to install Firefox and access the web. My problem is that EVERYTHING is excruciatingly slow. I do realize that this was installed on a VERY old PC but was wondering if there is anything I can do to increase the response time. For example would adding some more RAM be worthwhile? Would I be better off trying an older distribution or something or is this just too old to be even worth playing around with? I don't really have any plans for what I am going to use this for... I am mainly just setting it up to learn a bit about Linux and play around some. Thanks for your time and any suggestions!
