  1. Feather Linux see here for spec's although this is for a live CD; not sure what would be needed for a hard drive install?

    scribus

I've just found that Scribus is capable of editing PDF docs. So, i'm just testing at the moment and have worked out that first of all I need to convert a PDF doc to .PS , then when Scribus is open, I need to 'import' ('open' will not work) the .PS document. Editing is then fairly straightforward if you only need to add text to a form. However, the test PDF document I am working on has 5 pages. When its converted to .PS it still has 5 pages which are viewable in Ghostscript. Yet when I import to Scribus, it only shows the first page. The lower taskbar only shows it as pages 1 of 1 (when it should be 1 of 5); I've tried this with other multi page PDF docs - scribus is only showing the first page of the document. I've looked around the Scribus site and cannot find any reference to this problem. Anyone know if how to get the 5 pages showing?
  3. Give them a plug if their service is that good :P <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yay! After my posts here on Wednesday night, I sent them an email to see if disc2 could be replaced (I'd bought the original discs a few weeks ago). An email arrived at my Inbox Thursday morning immediately confirming a replacement would be sent out. Friday morning - disc2 was delivered by the postie. Thanx to these guys.
  4. My replacement disc 2 arrived this morning - and everything is now tikkityboo. Great service.
  5. :D actually reading your post makes more sense this morning - it was a long day yesterday. Anyway, 3 cheers for the online store - I sent them an email yesterday and they are replacing the faulty disc for me.
  6. Once you've downloaded the tar installer where you want it (i.e. home/<a_folder>) highlight the installer, right click/Actions/Extract here. This will create another folder. Look inside for a shell script called firefox. Double click it. You'll then have Firefox up and running. I create a shortcut on my desktop pointing to the shell script. You can also do the same with the Menu Editor. If that doesn't work, see if this thread has any suggestions (my posts say the same as above) here
  7. I Installed a different CD Drive - then I removed my already pre installed Xpdf and again tried to reinstall it through my disc sources - same problem - just keeps asking for the CD thats already in the drive. I guess its a dodgy disc. Ah well, thank goodness for urpmi. Thanks for the earlier feedback guys.
  8. My fear is that the disc is faulty - I've checked the CD sources set up and mount points and everything looks OK. I'll try adamw's suggestion just to make sure its not my Drive, but I guess I'll end up burning a copy of disc2 - unless the online store is happy to exchange.
  9. uuhhmm I can get hold of a second one and try that. Thanx - don't know why I didn't think of that b4
  10. During a software install, what might cause a disc to be requested, and when provided, is rejected and asked for again. I have noticed a couple times that this has happened (2 different boxes) so perhaps its a faulty disc? However, that said, fresh installs have been made (mandrake 10.1). The most recent episode was trying to install Xpdf using my 4 discs as sources. MCC would ask for disc 2, I'd put it in the tray, and after a few seconds, it would be ejected with a request to insert disc2 - this cycle continues. I have installed Xpdf using urpmi -but I wonder if anyone might suggest whats happenening with the install disc? The disc was recently bought from a well recognised provider of budget cost Linux software - but like I say, fresh installs seem OK.
  11. Glad it worked out. You can also check out options available in the MCC>mount points>floppy>options etc
  12. none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,codepage=850 0 0
  13. uklinux.net are offering pre installed PCs (mini ITX): http://www.uklinux.net/linuxpcs/ The web page is under construction, but there are links to access .pdf docs re: spec's etc. From an ad in a Linux magazine, its not the prettiest of PCs but it comes with linux pre installed (don't know what flavour - I haven't read the docs). Don't know if they would be shipped or not?
  14. My very first introduction to linux was the purchase of Mandrake9.2 powerpack - rather than a download - because it supposedly came with something like 60 days mandrake expert support (or was it 30?) Anyway, as I'd never even used linux before, I thought this was the sensible option. Well I had a few problems at the start - and made my posting to Mandrake expert - and followed this up by various emails - *nobody* ever even made a reply, of any sort. However, I received plenty of emails to remind me that my 30/60 days of support were quickly disappearing. I nearly did join club - but after being conned about receiving support, they didn't get the dosh. If it were not for MUB i'd would say categorically that I'd have dumped Mandrake and would now be using windaz. If Mandrake sells a package, it needs to ensure it meets its obligations to the paying customer. Other than that, I can honestly say that I'm glad I made the switch from M$ to linux.
  15. As axel says, the link won't load :( can you resubmit please?

    Firefox

Uumm just been reading in micro mart ( a UK pc magazine www.micromart.co.uk) that Firefox, by default sends out referer information to every last site you visit. i.e. the last site you visted, the date and time etc etc. See PC flank Anyways, this can be disabled the following way: In the address bar, type about:config scroll down to network.http.sendRefererHeader and also network.http.sendSecureXSiteReferrer On network.http.sendRefererHeader double click settings to 0 On network.http.sendSecureXSiteReferrer set to False You can then test this here

    Urpmi problem

To install urpmi 1) Go the Easy-UrPMI link at the top of this page 2) Select your PC architecture and OS and then select your mirrors. 3) You are then given the command/s to enter into your console , as su. Three easy steps. To use urpmi check the FAQ, specifically here Another very good resource is on the TWiki Welcome aboard the board.
  19. right click on the clock Type = plain showtimezone = Local timezone (gives date alongside the clock) copy to clipboard gives days/dates/times etc - not sure how to show the actual day tho alongside the clock.
  20. YD3 is a text installer YD4 is a GUI installer and therefore, twas the YD3 I was talking of
  21. we did some foolin aound on an old iMac destined for the recycling heap. We didn't have the original OS so we bunged on Yellow Dog - and the ol Mac now has a breath of new life in its circuit boards and its paltry 64MB RAM - KDE just eats up the resources. Not the most straightforward of installations (we really are very spolilt with Mandrake!) but then again, it wasn't the most complex. We also had a couple of problematic download/burns adding to the fun. We only did this last week (YD4 I think it is) and like I say it was really only an experiment - we don't have anything to upgrade it with, but it works and would make a decent MyFirstComputa, specially if we could get some more RAM. As expected, it has all the esential stuff - but cos we don't have a connection in workshop, can't say what configuringn the in built modem is like. Point is, even on junk, YD works, so I bet it just on a Powerbook.
  22. Yup, to join the crowd, I can vouch for emachines working with linux. My eTower667 has had Mandrake 9.2 and 10.0 installed and running without any problems. Here is the official line which has been so for about a year that I know of. I'm considereing a flash upgrade (I can't get my CD/DVD combo to boot from the DVD - CD's are OK), on my machine I can't find the BIOS ID string - so you might want to check here for BIOS agent - this is also the company advised by emachines UK to ID the BIOS. Here is a link to an unofficial emachines site which might help you ID your mobo etc. And there is even a emachine upgraders forum Biggest issue I find is memory related - it only come with bog standard 64RAM and every stick I've tried to give it a boost is rejected after a short period of time - Its all salvaged but works OK in other boxes I have. Guess I'll have to buy some instead :( Go Mandrake go...
  23. # Thanks anon for the confirmation of what kinda software I'll be needing. I'll be reading them up. Much obliged. Cheers.
