  1. Well, no one is really dumping too much on M$ or rather on you for keeping it - I consider myself towards intermediate-advanced in linux, yet I still dual boot for Wolverine's Revenge, Spiderman the Movie (the game), certain kazaa needs.. Chris said it best above. Until you get comfortable and certain things have matured (choice is good, but installation procedures shouldn't be unique for every friggin' app!!) it's a scary thought to go clean. Although I will come the end of december... and I'll do without the bells and whistles that come at, IMO, too high a price. Besides, getting rid of windows completely will be the best way to force me to learn the few things I haven't gotten around to yet.
  2. I'm with DOlson - once I figured out layers it was much faster for everything. I now make all changes, text additions, etc on new layers so it's easy to "undo" 6 days and 2 reboots later... The layers & frames window lets you hit the "New Layer" button. The eye indicates whether or not you can see it. Easy enough!
  3. School. Specifically visual studio 6. And occasionally I use kazaa and haven't yet figured out how to get it all up and running in either of my two linux installs. Late december I go free, and I'm counting down the days.

    XMMS

Damn! That's a great idea - I don't think anything does that yet, but I'd e-mail xmms developers with that suggestion if I were you!
  5. also - ques. #3: is there a slightly older version of corel floating around that runs on linux?
  6. I have a friend who needs a PC for school this weekend :? She likes corel and not m$ office stuff. My question is: do you think openoffice is close enough to corel or is it really striving to be m$ office? Also, she needs to be able to do a slideshow like presentations and powerpoint - does OOo have a slide app? (not at home - can't check; I've only ever used the word processor)
  7. I can't really vote because I do have a windows partition until december (when I'll not have any classes anymore, mainly visual studio type classes that make me unclean) I have been using linux for 2 years, booting only ever into it for about a year (when I got my USR modem that works instead of my internal winmodem). Come december I get clean for sure - 2 or 3 distros, no windows. I'd really like to try SuSE and that quebec mandrake derivative :D
  8. ah. So... uh, does that mean we will get the chance to d/l it - or it's like a "buy a SPARC with our linux to get it..." ?
  9. I wanted to d/l the sun linux a while ago - can you? Or do you have to pay for it? I can't find a link... ps wouldn't this go in "other distros" ?
  10. You know, that's a really good point. That makes it worth a shot, anyway.
  11. Is this in 2.4, 2.6, or both? And where in the menuconfig is this found? Thanks
  12. SCO says IBM behind open source attacks. Kinda related here, so I thought I'd throw it in. Pretty funny :) So any word on whether canucks can call?

    Half-Life 2?

keep in mind to pester your favorite stores and walmarts (note how I separated those) :) for a linux version so that average joe and jane q. doe hear of this nifty new OS! I'll buy a linux version even though the first one didn't thrill me... "Gotta support the team." --Puddy on Seinfeld The site www.mymidrums.com is running Apache/1.3.19 (Unix) (Red-Hat/Linux) Chili!Soft-ASP/3.6.2 mod_perl/1.24_01 PHP/4.0.6 FrontPage/5.0.2 mod_ssl/2.8.1 OpenSSL/0.9.6 on Linux. Ahhhhh. Thanks netcraft!
  14. Does this strike anyone else as odd considering they're open filesystems anyway.. It's not like they have to guess like we do to write something taht reads and/or writes to linux FS's...
  15. LET US KNOW if you need help with your options above! (Somehow you strike me as learned in the ways of mandrake anyway though) ;)
  16. What I do is put exec fluxbox at the end of my ~/.xinitrc and use startx still. I also had to edit my /etc/rc.conf I believe to change the $XSESSION to fluxbox from kde I believe... Anyway, what did you do?
  17. Hey! Great to have you - obviously you now know you can come here for any problem you run into, and hopefully we can help you out. Remember: you can visit and chat anytime - not just when something goes screwy ('cause you'll find that doesn't happen too often ;) ) Welcome to a greater world!
  18. That link 2 posts up is also hilarious. SCO gets more ridiculous everyday! If I were them, I'd go - "JUST KIDDING! Thanks for the $6 Million M$, we're using to fund KDE and Gnome, sucka!" I read somewhere that a win for SCO indicating that the GPL is invalid would somehow void all copyrights because of the way they're enforced or something... interesting. There's too much at stake for any sane judge to side with a dung-pile over hard proof.
  19. SCO will attempt to win its $3 billion case against IBM by arguing that the General Public Licence (GPL) is invalid. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! IBM is going to make roadkill outta SCO in court! You go to hell, SCO! You go to hell and you die! This lawsuit has been sponsored by M$ don't forget. They gave 6 million to SCO for a license was it? I love to see them waste their money.

    Urban Terror 3

Why is that sweet? <shrug> Why have the older one at all?

    I wonder........

Yep. JaseP's got it. If you had to re-write the code for OpenGL because it was *kaff DirectX (booo) then you practically have the whole thing to redo. Same goes for sound too... SDL and OpenGL are the way to go - faster and easy to port to any platform.
  22. Yeah - partimage seems to be the way to go. Has anyone tried this yet? Looks pretty good... I'm anxious to hear some "user testimonials" for it.
